Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption

Pros..

1. Has a pretty solid story

2. great characters

3. has an amazing soundtrack

4. Doesn’t need to be modded in order to work like its counter part VTM Bloodlines

Cons.

1. Graphics are dated

2. Only allows 6 blood disciplines on your cast bar and you can’t key-bind your disciplines

3. The multiplayer doesn’t work and can’t even link up with friends through steam or even a LAN game.

4. Doesn’t have a steam workshop to fix bugs, add improved Graphics, or restore cut content.

5. Highly exploitable with being able to cast the discipline (awaken) on enemies to infinitely farm experience/gold which in turn makes the game insanely easy to play-through.

Short verdict: it will scratch your World of Darkness itch just as good as VtM: Bloodlines.

I played this game after completing Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines , which got me addicted to the World of Darkness mythos in the first place. And neither was I disappointed this time. In fact, I was surprised that this almost 20 years old game can perform so good and I can enjoy it so much.

Although the story is not as intricate as in some other RPGs and, in the single player mode, you can’t choose your clan, the story is quite interesting anyway. It’s a wonderful opportunity to participate in quests both in medieval Prague and Vienna, as well as in modern London and New York of the 1990’s. Redemption captures the World of Darkness spirit just as well as Bloodlines.

A Vampyre Story

A Vampyre Story

A starting note that the play time does not reflect game length or completion time as I often leave games running whilst off doing other things.

A Vampyre Story is a fun point and click game that whilst not breaking any moulds of the genre it’s characters and dialogue I thought were witty and memorable and had me laughing out loud a fair few times. It also looks good, but the animations can sometimes ‘stick’ shall we say, although this is not a big issue.

Any fans of P&C’s will not be diasapointed in what this has to offer, although not the most challenging game out there, the puzzles aren’t ludicrously obscure as they can be in some other titles and range from simple to medium difficulty.

I picked this game up when it first came out on disc and I regretted never finishing it. I was thrilled that it showed up on Steam and I’m very happy my memories of the game weren’t just nostalgia, it’s very fun and polished. The tone and puzzles are reminiscent of classic LucasArts games and the art is top notch, even by today’s cartoon game standards.

Some have not liked the voice of Mona, the main protagonist. It is high pitched and I can see how it could annoy folks but I thought it fit and didn’t mind.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2

Its Soul Reaver lite

While not a bad game, its definitely not as good as it’s predecessor in a lot of respects.

The Good:

Superb voice acting, nice story, the puzzles are more complex and involved yet overall pretty good and offer a bit more clues to solve them, which is a marked improvement to the previous game.

The Not-so-good:

-The combat - In comparison to SR1 it feels distant, with little weight or consequence behind your punches, making it rather unsatisfying.

Furthermore, by the endgame, when fighting 4+ opponents, they will ALL attack at the same time, and while realistic and “challenging” it really comes out as cheap, specially when

! some of those enemies would naturally attack each other, but as soon as they detect you, ALL of them go for your ass instead. . Your Soul Reaver blade can be used from the start of the game and is a bit OP, that however is countered by a bar which fills the more you use the blade and kill with it, and once filled takes away some of your health, thus forcing you to mix its use with regular weapons, which at least brings some depth to an otherwise humdrum combat system. Speaking of the blade, it can be infused throughout the story with different elements (light, dark, wind & fire) but disappointingly only come into play in puzzles; yet another sign that the combat is undercooked at best.

I was finally able to get the game working courtesy of this excellent patch right here .

“But suppose your throw a coin enough times – suppose one day it lands on its edge.”

The opening to Soul Reaver is seared into my memory.

No matter how many times I watch the introductory cutscene, the booming synth pulls me right back into the Gothic tableau of the Legacy of Kain universe, as if I were discovering it anew. With slick narrative efficiency, it sets in motion a tale of vengeance that spills out across time, daring its protagonists to challenge the apparent indomitability of fate.

Damsel

Damsel

Overview

Damsel is a small indie action platformer game created by Screwtape Studios. The game shines in fast-paced action, which will not let you breathe on the hardest difficulty. Although you play as a Damsel, the only ones who are in distress are the Vampires you fight.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Hothead difficulty offers the best experience as it is required to be fast and precise.

  • The variation of enemies and environmental barriers is satisfying enough for the whole game.

Let me preface this with a statement, I am not usually into sidescrolling platformers, and am inexperienced with other games of this genre.

I went into this game really unsure of what to expect. It had a badassed looking vamp hunter with corporate zombies. I liked the humour of it, I went head first into a rabbit hole.

I can’t stop playing! For a new game, it is getting regular updates and the changes that are being made is only making it better. The length of the levels means you can put in a good 20 mins of gameplay in between whatever you are doing and feel acomplished, however, on many occasions i’ve accidentally sat here for a couple of hours, trying to beat my high scores.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

When someone mention this game, SOMEONE will install it. That lucky person is none other than me. How about the game you ask; and the answer is simple. It’s really, really bad. This game is made on source engine, which is undoubtedly one of the best and maybe the best engine at 2000’s. Half-Life 2 made on this engine. And Portal. And Team Fortress 2. You get the idea, if you are going to make a game with a gun - this engine is the golden choice.

But somehow and somewhat, Troika games blew it. The one and only purpose of this engine, which is developing first-person shooter game, and they really blew it all over. Just pick a gun and shoot something. It’s notoriously bad. When you minimize the game, the alpha layers of textures will be gone and all you left with black squares. It doesn’t have widescreen support. It doesn’t support higher resolutions. This game aged so bad that it stinks like a rotten cheese.

(Ignore my time on record as I’ve spent most of my playtime offline)

Easily one of my most favorite games of all time! I remember playing this on the original Playstation like it was only yesterday. In my mind this game set the bar very high for what video games were capable of. Wonderfully written script and rich dialogue, Extremely clever puzzles that make you consider all possibilities. A unique and large open world game that managed to pull off one of the first concepts of streaming data directly from the disk, cutting out loading screens from area to area. Crystal Dynamics had outdone themselves when making this game, and it’s a shame that we don’t get games like this more often.

Soul Reaver

“Tumbling, burning with white-hot fire, I plunged into the depths of the abyss. Unspeakable pain… relentless agony… time ceased to exist… only this torture… and a deepening hatred of the hypocrisy that damned me to this hell. An eternity passed, and my torment receded, bringing me back from the precipice of madness. The descent had destroyed me… and yet I lived.” ~Raziel

This game, to me, was the start of the Legacy of Kain series. Although, technically, that was actually Blood Omen. As a matter of fact, the first Blood Omen unknowingly set the stage and essentially serves as the backdrop for all of the Legacy of Kain games. In Soul Reaver however, you do not actually play as Kain. Instead, you play as one of his vampiric lieutenants, Raziel. But almost immediately, things immediately go bad as when Raziel approaches Kain and shows that he has evolved by gaining a set of wings (the first evolution of all of Kain’s vampiric brood), Kain considers this a transgression against him. In an act of rage, he rips your wings from you, and then has you thrown into the Lake of the Dead. Burning, trapped in the abyss, Raziel reaches the bottom but he is lifeless, his body practically destroyed.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition

First off, I’m a huge fan of the Castlevania series. So that foundation may color my opinion of this game and it’s ensuing interquel and sequel (which I’m currently in the midst of). Something about medieval through Enlightment era Europe with a heavy gothic/baroque aesthetic, corrupted through dark forces that threaten the world? Awesome. Tons of monsters pulling on a multitude of inspiration from the myth cycles of antiquity through the modern Universal monsters? Yes, please.

Konami struck gold initially by creating these dark adventures that took a quite serious tone for the early Nintendo systems, offering a beefy challenge of vintage Nintendo difficulty through several increasingly impressive platformer games. They then evolved into the famed Metroidvanias with the release of Symphony of the Night on the Playstation - trading a bit of the reflex-intensive difficulty for massive sprawling environments that took forever to explore and fully unlock - and followed this formula with several excellent installments on Nintendo’s handhelds where they found their most sustainable home and success through the late 2000’s. Then Konami, sensing the increasingly stagnant nature of the series as it became mired in repeated iterations of SotN’s sprawling platformer/RPG hybrid, started searching for a way to revitalize the series again, just as SotN ignited a sort of Golden Age for the series.

(Important note: This game, for whatever reason, doesn’t like being set to fullscreen + max res on a display other than that which Windows / your video card identifies as Display 1, regardless if it’s your primary display or not. Weird bug but easy to fix.)

Lords of Shadow is a flawed but polished masterpiece and a triumph of artistic direction. It’s shortcomings are forgivable. That said, since you can expect to sink upwards of 40hrs into this, I’ll go into some more detail.

Presentation wise, this game is stunning. Masterful visuals paired with smooth and optimized 4K performance make for an eye-popping experience. The art team went all out on this and it shows. I’ve never taken so many screenshots of a game before. Two major detractors though: 1. Some of the cutscenes were pre-rendered for console are unimproved by modern hardware (they still look passable but they’re jaggy af); 2. Godrays are a weak point. The score is powerful but not iconic; you’ll love it in the moment but try to recall the music later and you’ll likely struggle, for the most part. This isn’t objectively a bad thing, as it simply means it’s enhancing the experience without overpowering it but I was disappointed by the lack of iconic singles and the abscence of a Bloody Tears revamp.

Vampyr

Vampyr

If someone says “Do you want to play a game as a vampire?” the answer should always be yes, but it should be especially true for Vampyr.

This is by far the best vampire game in existence. Maybe it doesn’t have the weird early 2000s sexiness of Blade or Underworld, but let’s be real, those are both pretty stupid. Instead of new-age vampires, this is old school. It takes place after WWI when the spanish flu is ravaging and killing people. DONTNOD cleverly uses the epidemic to mask but also discuss vampirism as a similar affliction. That means you can see a world ravaged by two epidemics, though most unknowing about the vampire problem.

Words cannot accurately describe my love for this game. The environments, the voice acting, THE BLOODY MUSIC, its all sublime!!! Feeling the weight of your every choice makes this game a must play and is one of my top 10 games of all time.

The only “negative” I could say is the combat is ehh, if you are only interested in the story, I would just stick to easy mode

BloodRayne Betrayal (Legacy)

BloodRayne Betrayal (Legacy)

If you are familiar with the Bloodrayne series, then I must first warn you that it plays nothing like the previous games, an open mind is required should you decide to purchase. This is a challenging platform brawler that has 15 stages in total, not a Metroidvania with free roam. You can obtain secret skulls that can extend your life bar or bullet count, but you won’t unlock new move sets or level up.

In terms of graphics, I feel the screenshots didn’t do it much justice. While it may look like a flash game in still frames, the animation is extremely smooth and pleasant to look at. The stage backdrops are detailed and befitting in most cases, while the blood splatters never gets old. I do have some gripes on the lack of variety though, as every single enemy of the same type will look the same every time, not even a colour swap, this was just plain lazy.

OK, look at screenshots. That’s it. End of the story. BloodRayne: Betrayal is one of those rare games that look almost exactly as they feel. What can you expect from something that looks like this? Naturally, a tiny little spin-off that has pretty much nothing with the original series. Might & Magic Heroes, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles, HALO: Spartan Assault, Magicka: Wizards of the Square Tablet… You know the drill. And even though this game is not really important as a part of the BloodRayne series? Gameplay here sure does deserve your attention. See, BloodRayne: Betrayal is a game from WayForward Technologies. The guys who made the very first Shantae, Contra 4 and surprisingly great Aliens Infestation. And even though BloodRayne: Betrayal is not as good as those games above… it tries. It sure does.
