Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Oh Rats! No I’m serious actually…and bats as well. Just like a bat out of hell Dracula has furry friends in both low and high places. Awaken from an extremely long eternal night and find some nice necks to chomp on. Whip your blood back and forth (Whip it real good). Explore Dracula’s back to the future adventure. Talk about a miserable pile of secrets. You are the prince of darkness! The dragon Dracul! What a terrible night to have a curse.

This is the direct sequel to Lords of Shadow 1, which was one of my favorite Castlevania games. It feels like you are playing a medieval version of God of War. If you liked the GBA/DS SoTN style Metroidvania ones you might not enjoy this one.

I think I need to add this to the “games that most people hated which I actually enjoyed” list. Admittedly, I’m biased because I really dig Castlevania, enjoyed the first Lords of Shadow and Mirror of Fate, and am a sucker for the idea of playing as Dracula himself. But even at its most frustrating moments, Lords of Shadow 2 isn’t nearly as bad as Edge Magazine (which gave it a 4/10) or any of the other mainstream reviews would have you believe.

Bloodsucking awesome stuff:

  • I feel like combat’s speedier and more responsive than it was in the first Lords of Shadow, and there’s less reliance on quicktime events. This might have to do with the fact that I’m just more experienced with the combat system after playing through the first game and Mirror of Fate, but I had a lot of fun beating up some of the bosses, which leads me to the next point…

What a crazy awesome game !!

Random thoughts :

  • Weird parody universe that made us binge-play until all was unlocked

  • Flappy tongued diplodocuses. Very tongued. Very very flappy.

  • The soundtrack is incredible !! :3 meow

  • If you finish a level first, you get a physics gun to troll the other players. That the best part !!

  • Or you can just self-explode and mess the physics for others ^^

  • Overall, it’s an addictive physics game with a steady learning curve. Quite difficult at first, and rewarding when you get better at it !

I am one of those people you would call a movie buff. I love watching movies and series, and I have a tendency to collect French movies (especially the ones from the 60’s, 70’s and 90’s). So, I was totally amazed when I was introduced to Joe, from Epic Loon. This guy has an incredible collection of VHS movies and his bedroom walls are decorated with posters with thousands of VHS tapes. A perfect setup for any movie fan! Joe shared with me an amazing story that happened to him recently. His beloved VHS player start malfunctioning, and in desperation, he ran to the hardware corner shop to see if he could find any sort of instrument that would help fix his VHS player. There, the Chinese owner told him about this miracle tape cleaner that would make his VHS player work again. What the owner specifically forgot to mention is that the VHS tape cleaner was a prison for four little aliens, and from now on he has to watch his favourite movies with these little buggers moving from one scene to the next. Welcome to Epic Loon!

Simple? - yes. Short? - yes. Repetitive? - yes. Overall, if you've got a small gap in your free time and just want to kill few hours without investing too much efforts - this will work. PIxel art and music is also kinda good. Gameplay is rather simplistic, but still, sometimes it may require some planning to achieve victory, while getting all the achievements may get really tricky. There are 2 characters to choose + 1 to unlock and four maps, but sessions may be rather long. Each new map has less space to move and harder enemies to deal with.

--- This game has a solid core mechanic, i.e. 2048, which is a puzzle game about merging identicle tiles to increase in levels. It also has nice pixel graphics. However. The attempt at merging 2048 gameplay with rpg starts and ends with tiles representing health, attack, and defense. As you increase in level, enemies ramp up but there is no skills or continuation of abilities to counteract the dry slog of checking whether enemy has more or less armor than you. If more armour, aquire more armour. If less armour, allow enemie to kill itself. You win as long as you have 1 HP. *– [Real player with 6.5 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198030050751)* ---
