Hacker’s Beat

Hacker’s Beat

I was looking for a different kind of rhythm game and this might be it. From watching the gameplay videos of this game, it got me pretty hyped. The fact that the edit mode just came out just get me even more excited to play this game.

The core gameplay is alright, I’ve certainly had some fun playing some of the charts but I think there’s something wrong or missing from the game. For example, after exiting the result screen I was greeted by random white triangles on a black background while the music’s still playing. I thought “Oh, something cool is happening” so I started to mash the keyboard for a few minutes only to realize it has crashed.

Wow! After my very first playthrough I found myself inspired enough to write a positive review. The music is phenomenal! The visual a bit on the trippy side, and it’s a good idea to preview the songs before trying them out in-game, to get a feel for what they may throw at you. It’s not easy, and that’s not a bad thing…as it poses a good challenge that gets easier with familiarity. This game is in my favorites playlist already…so with less than a half-hour played at the time of reviewing Hacker’s Beat. it’s safe to say my playtime will grow rapidly. This game may not be for everyone, but it sure is for me!

Chimpology

Chimpology

Chimpology is a retro pixel button mashing game where you must hit the keys corresponding to “1” and “0” in sequence. Get the numbers right and you can progress. Enough mistakes and you lose. For some reason they decided that despite having “0” and “1” keys on your keyboard, they should be “z” and “m” because apparently these guys never saw a keyboard before.

There’s no other gameplay to speak of here. Graphics are ugly. The developers seem to have put more effort into explaining why their terrible game works the way it does (chimpanzees or something) than actually developing a game people might enjoy. Totally not worth $3.

Heartbeat: Regret

Heartbeat: Regret

I would not recommend this game as a horror game. I feel like it has a lot of potential as a horror game but due to the frustration of movement. The game losses any sort of suspense and is replaced by frustration. Some people have mentioned that the lack of a tutorial was an added challenge; I didn’t find this to be true for myself. However I did find a lot of difficultly reading the text. As well as finding the tempo for the movement difficult especially at slower tempos.

The text being hard to read is not a huge problem as the text is read out loud and I got used to it over time. Though for people that are better at spelling than me I’m sure this is even less of an issue if it is an issue at all. Though for the issue of movement the tempo is very hard to find. I died severely times just trying to move around the areas and spent a bunch of time sitting in one spot just waiting for the heartbeat to go down. This made it very frustrating when most of my time is either spent sitting around waiting to be able to move without dying or trying to get back to a point that was right before I got killed just to march into death again. For as long as it takes to move around the areas you just lose anything that makes it scary. Honestly the most scary thing about it was how I was about to pick up my keyboard and chuck it across the room in frustration.

An extremely unique idea! Never thought I would have typing horror and rythm in the same game! I love it! A little bit of trouble with instructions and knowing what to a couple times, but the incredible sound design makes up for it. I’ll be playing this for a while I can already tell

I enjoyed the experience of the game and I like the concept of how the use of the ‘shift’ key can change a note to a sharp or flat.

Nice program for my kid to learn alphabets to the songs he’s familiar with as well as mimicking playing the piano.

WAVER: A Typing Adventure

WAVER: A Typing Adventure

OMG I am already in love with this game!

Real player with 32.0 hrs in game

Can type 100wpm. Cannot remember where keys are while playing. (Had fun anyway.)

Refreshing and unique, Waver definitely feels worth the purchase if you enjoy something both straightforward in concept and infuriatingly difficult to perfect. The rhythm of the “waves” will take some getting used to, however once you find it it makes sense (I found this difficult to admit, as my first instinct was to just be mad at the game). The learning curve is not the smoothest, but as you start to improve, receiving better scores/perfect waves is very satisfying. This game definitely feels more like it’s made for an experienced typist looking to test and refine skills/dexterity, as there are little to no practical educational aspects for younger learners (outside of typist mode, which is just your basic WPM typing test).

Slash It Ultimate

Slash It Ultimate

Initially, I thought that this game was going to be a flop. This in part to the fact that it looked like it had a bunch messy graphics, hundreds of achievements (which some would say is meant to be a way to basically charge for achievements that you don’t have to actually put any effort into) and small number of reviews.

I’ve always been a fan of DDR, and Slash it ultimate reminded me of it as well. So after playing it for about 30 minutes and figuring everything out, I’ve gotta say that I’m amazed and ultimately hooked.

TL;DR ‘‘Slash it Ultimate’’ Review

Slash it Ultimate is the latest game in this series and has improved graphics and way more songs to listen to while smashing your keyboard.First off,the UI is prettier and more responsive than in previous games. There are more statistics from your plays and the leaderboards are better. This game has 7 different game modes and only 3 are typing modes. There is a mode for mouse movement, arrow keys, space key and a unique mode that changes your perspective from seeing the screen from the side and then from the back if the jump button is pressed. The sad thing is the selection of music will get tiresome quickly and there is no way of adding your own songs. It also feels that the beat is not synchronized with the gameplay sometimes.Another problem I found was that while playing the numbers mode it’s very easy to confuse a spinning 6 with a spinning 9 which causes a loss in momentum.Same thing with the spinning letters W and M during alphabet modes. Also, there is some lack of input while playing the Hard mode for numbers which kinda ruins the fun of that game mode.

Cons:

  • It’s Typing… It Gets Old

Review

Slash It 2 is a nice upgrade from the first Slash It. It has even a better soundtrack and a better look. Beef up your profile with lots of achievements and an easy perfect game. A nice little game to play for a couple hours or so. It really did improve my WPM (Words Per Minutes) from 50 WMP to 60 WPM. A great game to help improve your typing skills.

Slash It 2 is a fantastic game that really helps excersise touch typing skills or for those wanting to improve key pressing reaction times. Slash It 2 also has an incredible soundtrack that is different depending on which mode is chosen to play. It is cheap and very highly recommended.

First things first though, this game is one of those ‘Achivement Farming’ games where you play the game for a low amount of time and gain hundreds of achievemens. Now this may be the case here and looking over the Achievements they are all relatively the same letters, numbers and symbols with different font and styling, but it doesn’t change the fact that the game is actually lots of fun both to play and listen to.

Steno Arcade

Steno Arcade

First of all, this is a steno game. What is steno? Look here at me playing this game on a QWERTY keyboard and a steno machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtQzTUEuPWo You can see that I don’t write individual letters, rather words at a time. And writing words at a time means that my hands don’t move much, much less than a QWERTY keyboard where you have to type every letter.

The steno machine is much faster at text entry than a regular keyboard, but it takes months to become proficient. Part of the reason that many haven’t heard of steno is that for the longest time it wasn’t public information! A major stakeholder in this game, Mirabai Knight, tried to bring steno to everyone, starting in 2010. She first had a program made that interfaced with steno machines and handled all the steno logic → that program is Plover, and I use and develop it now.

I’ll divide this review for two audiences: Uninformed and transcribers in the shorthand trade.

Uninformed:

If you stumbled upon this game, you might be wondering “What the heck is steno?” which is fair question. This is very niche product for a speicifc trade/industry in which you might recognize in captions on Television or Court reporters (sometimes refered as stenographers). This means that you need a specific usb-equipped shorthand steno writer and download an open source software to convert what you input into that writer onto your computer - you still following me? - and also you’ll need to learn the complete theory and methodology of how to write steno. If you’re still confused or uninterested thenn this is obviously not the game for you.
