Introduction

It Came From Space, and Ate Our Brains is a top down shooter where you fight waves of aliens trying to eat your brains. I was skeptical with going into this game because of the blocky style graphics, but I was pleasantly surprised. It Came From Space, and Ate Our Brains has plenty of different guns/upgrades, maps, powerups, and different aliens. Along with the six maps currently there is more on the way and 4 different difficulties that are vastly different. The only real issue with It Came From Space, and Ate Our Brains is the fact of the camera gets blocked by map structures, but this issues is far and in between. Triangle Studios really has a hidden gem with It Came From Space, and Ate Our Brains, from the unique graphics style to the fun multiplayer.

Some games dont look like much at first, but keep you coming back for more and more without realizing why. This is one of them.

With so many top down shooters and alien themed games on Steam, why is this so good? Because the aliens are pink and glow in the dark? Thats actually cool too , but here is why you should get this game:

Game play / Game mechanics: the controls are very smooth , so is the scrolling / gameflow and motion in general, creating a very pleasing game experience. For top down shooters with “twin stick” controls ( move with one stick , aim freely with the other ) this is critical. Not many people realize but this is usually what decides whether the game is great or terrible in this genre.

Action Commando

Action Commando

Action Commando is a Town of Machine spinoff focused entirely on combat. Hub-based world design, inventory management and most of the character interactions have been removed / de-prioritized in favour of fast-paced combat where your only concern is what’s trying to kill you at a given moment. While it lacks the depth of Town of Machine, it works really well as a coffee break, action-packed, top-down shoot’em up. Unlike in its predecessor you don’t have to worry about inventory space and quests - just go forward and blow things up… and it kind of works. The game is pretty short and unfortunately set almost entirely underground which makes the levels blend together but it’s not that big of a deal considering its lenght. Give it a try if you ever feel like mowing down monsters for a few hours.

A well-crafted, action-focused twin stick shooter with a good dose of humour. It’s a spin-off of Town of Machine that’s set in the same universe. While it uses many of the same assets as ToM, it’s more action-orientated and simpler to play.

Made by single person, its production values are excellent - gameplay, graphics, sound: all are top-notch.

It’s worth playing Town of Machine before this, but not wholly necessary.

Blue Flame

Blue Flame

Ever since my first Iron Pineapple video, I have been snatching up and playing almost every souls-like game that looks worth my time. Heard about Blue Flame. Googled Blue Flame, but nothing came up. Googled Blue Flame Twitter, found an Adult Entertainment twitter profile. Looked through it. Realized I wasn’t in incognito. Cleared my browser history and came to Steam properly.

Added this baby to my wishlist only to realize that it was releasing the next day. Release sale, 20% off, under 10 bucks. Dev diary says game’s about 3-4 hours with about 7 bosses and more content is coming. Can always refund it if bad… It’s Friday, let’s play games.

This game is a souls experience for sure. Main problem is that it was too easy. Fuck the maze tho, that was just not a great experience, im not buying a maze game. That being said tho, was not too bad took maybe 40 mins of running around. Only had problems with the Harypys, all the bosses pretty much was a first try. Game seems too short too. Overall not too bad, but the lack of players that own the game and the smallest community I have ever been in makes it a problem to even google anything about the game. Wait for sale tho becuse, the game is 4-5 hours and you must likely wont be playing it more then once or twice. I hope the devs add more stuff and maybe a Wiki for the important things like achivements and a small guide for getting stuck on directions despite it being a souls like. 1 thing they could add is more options in the settings menu and maybe a ng+

Also, the mechanics are tight, the numbers are fun and most stat boosts are kept small. Some really fun items, like the worm necklace and the one that inverts the colors, and the one that zooms you out, make the game brand new to play with when you pick them up.

Great game to play with friends. Race to beat the bosses mode and team statues mode are the best in my opinion. In the bosses mode you try to level up to 30 as fast as possible, get the coloured door key and fight the boss. Kill all the bosses and you become the arena god. In statues mode your team has to kill a statue to convert it to your team (the statues fight back against the opposing team). Capture all of the statues to win the game.

For a free game it has a great amount of content. I bought the full game and it’s worth it just for the BEEshop character. There is a lot of good character variety and it’s very satisfying driving away in your clown car or jamming on your guitar shooting music notes at somebody. Make sure you try all of the characters.

Ritual: Crown of Horns

Ritual: Crown of Horns

Summary: While Ritual may be in need of some quality of life improvements in certain areas, its fast-paced action-packed and strategic gameplay mixed with a metal soundtrack and varied weapons and abilities, create a difficult yet fun and engaging take on the Wild West. 8/10

Plot:

The writing is not a case of being a masterpiece but they certainly do the job, creating engagement and intrigue throughout. The characters bounce off each other reasonably well, with them often questioning each other or even outright annoying or teasing one another. It is unfortunate however that one doesn’t get nearly as much dialogue like that of the others, but regardless character design works. There is no mistaking the plot plays second to the gameplay in Ritual, never the less for those who are looking for a decent story in amongst all the carnage, there is an interesting one to be found here.

When it comes to top-down shooters, nothing beats tangling it up with hordes of monsters and all you have a six-shooter and pure luck. These are the kind of games that are exciting, fast-paced, and 100% rage-inducing. Ritual: Crown of Horns, from small indie studio Draw Distance, checks all the boxes.

Stylistically, this is a nice looking game. The art style heightens the grim landscape that we find our protagonist, Daniel Goodchild in. The music, a bold mix of heavy raw guitar and western-inspired melodies, only adds to the chaos that we’re about to dive into. Unfortunately, those two important elements are sometimes not enough to ease the frustrating aiming system and the unnecessarily hard stages you must clear.

Solaroids

Solaroids

If you like astroids type games, you will love Solaroids! It is a really smooth play, and there are many settings that you can tweak and change to adjust the game play/view the way you want. I also think the soundtrack is high quality and enjoy listening to it while I play. The local multiplayer mode is fun for families, -my kids enjoy the game too! Solaroids is still in early release, but the solo developer keeps us posted about the updates he is making and the plans he has to improve the game, including a story, and more grapics etc. He is also very open to suggestions, which I appreciate. I would definately recommend the game if you like to shoot things in space. It is surprisingly fun, and polished in the game play. Give it a try!

I have been playing this off and on for about 3 years. Seeing the massive updates, option upgrades, graphic changes, etc. has been really amazing.

This seems like a finished product, not a beta or early access… and then it updates and (unlike many other updates) you realize that they found a way to improve on something that was already great and retain the things you liked! You have even more things to explore or try out!

When the twin stick came out I was FINALLY a bit more competent and it transformed from a PC simulated arcade game to a modern console version.
