Naval Warfare

By Jove have I ever seen a pretty game.

Naval Warfare strikes me as a game that tries for a certain balance between both satisfying, in-depth, skill based gameplay and enormous gratuitous explosions. Suffice to say it hits that mark. Despite plenty of checkpoints and fairly generous power ups this game genuinely feels challenging to play - which makes it even more satisfying to watch a ship sink below the waves.

Now, as I said earlier, this game is pretty. Really pretty. (You may wish to glance at the screenshots above at this point) The game is tagged as “Steampunk”, a title I will happily say it earns. Unlike many others, who grab a few gears, brass and a bucket of oil, stick them on an airship, give it to a lady wearing a corset and metal goggles (seriously why would you ever make your goggles out of metal), then proceed to slap the steampunk label on it; this game has clearly thought put into it’s art and design. Everything from an aircraft to enourmous battleships and artillery cannons fit together perfectly.

this game has horrible mouse control and voice acting, alot of the options menu wont even work, the progression system makes no sence, the first boss battle is badly made and the rest of the boss battles are just puzzles with a bit of shooting that still makes no sence outside of blind shooting, at times you cant use some support boats because of the reason of no, the one part of the game that i bought it for that i saw in the show case video was short and poorly made, the story was crap, the cut scenes were out of synk cut out and did not fit the art style, some of the boats are made of pure bull shit (play and you would know), the ending was pointless and had the worst twist, its never explains the back story of why the word is water, you travle from the polls of the world to the equator in no time flat, the AI is as dumb as bricks, the w a s d keys are some how side ways, and it looks like shit.

Bartlow’s Dread Machine

Bartlow’s Dread Machine

Check out the full written review: https://www.confidentgamers.com/blog/bartlows-dread-machine-review-pc

Bartlow’s Dread Machine takes us back to the simpler times when arcade machines were more mechanical filled with gears, pulleys and levers. This twin stick shooter injects a small dose of style and imagery which we quite welcomed. While not perfect, Bartlow’s Dread Machine does hold our attention long enough, taking us through a story filled with mystery, intrigue and suspense.

The twin stick shooter has been around for awhile, but Tribetoy and Beep Games have presented it in a new stylish package. The details of the moving mechanical gears and parts to the old time amusement park music, Bartlow’s Dread Machine is a refreshing entry in the gaming market place. This game is simple, but also throws you into the gauntlet which puts a smile on your face when you make it out.

I’m generally not a fan of Early Access, so this was the first time I’d ever bought a game early. From the second I saw a trailer, I knew I had to have it. Months ago, I enjoyed the first few worlds. Today, there’s some good and bad within the full product. There are a few difficulty spikes in the later half of the game, and the unfavorable lives system causes some frustration. And sometimes the environments are a bit too dark to really get a good grip on things. But outside of those few gripes, this is a twin stick shooter unlike any other I’ve ever played. The one hundred year old style is really cool, reminding me a lot of pinball. The way the levels shift, the way everything is attached to metal rods, and the way the characters automate are all really delightful. Going all-in on that presentation reminds me a lot of Puppeteer (PS3) which I find is extremely underrated. There’s a lot of love that went into fully realizing what a turn-of-the-20th-century game would look, sound, and feel like. I wasn’t initially sure how the traversal would feel, but moving around the slotted tracks as you blast the various types of foes is both satisfying and fun. Fans of serviceable gameplay, who really love games with rich, unique atmospheres should find plenty to enjoy.

Gatling Gears

Gatling Gears

Gatling Gears is a hidden, underappreciated gem that deserves way more attention. It’s a wonderful twin-stick shooter with amazing soundtracks and perfectly balanced gameplay. It’s also one of the few dieselpunk games which makes this game even more interesting. There is not much to tell about the story because it’s not the selling point of this game and it’s not that interesting but the gameplay where it shines best. You can play co-op, solo, upgrade your walker, unlock new skins and try your hand on survival maps.

AIRHEART - Tales of broken Wings

AIRHEART - Tales of broken Wings

On a flight

Airheart is the story of Amelia, a young pilot and fisher woman who lives in a world among the clouds, Amelia fishes through dangerous skies collecting scrap in order to upgrade her plane and avoiding pirates all in the hope of one day making the catch of a lifetime and you are tasked with guiding Amelia on her journey.

That’s really as deep as the game got in the time that I spent with it but that’s all you really need to keep motivated in order to move forward within the game.

In A Nutshell

Airheart is a roguelike shooter telling the story of Amelia, a young pilot with the objective of reaching the stratosphere to capture a legendary whale, and honor the inheritance received by her father.

The game world is made of several layers, and your home, Granaria, will be on the lowest one. From there, with your at first weak plane, you will need to go around each layer, catching fish to make money, avoiding or destroying progressively stronger enemies on each level, find the elevator platforms to reach the next layer, and also eventually find secret components hidden in boxes around the various floating islands. Each four levels, you will meet a Boss, then once defeated, transition to a new biome, with a different season and appearance to it, different fish, enemy types, and dangers.

Charming! I finished this now and finally realized that there are a few bonus arcade games too. Actually, even the main game feels like a collection of the type of little home-made games we made for the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64, just with a lot more enemies. I am happy that I played with a controller, since this is a twin-stick shooter which can be somewhat unforgiving at times. The collision detection sometimes seemed to detect collision before I did, which caused some frustration, but it may be my own fault for beginning to getting used to games where you can graze bullets. It was in any case easier than many vintage games. The light-hearted story ties all the different levels together well, but don’t be mislead into thinking that this is just a shallow game about steampunk mining on Mars. If looking deeper, it actually teaches an important life lesson: Never be without scones, cheese and tea.

Bit conflicted about this game. Sometimes it’s just an annoying crowd control shooter game (with added difficulty as you run around ‘laps’ in certain levels that require that) and sometimes it’s a clever blast from the past action game and a well designed one too.

Love the MSX-era look. The 16-bit graphics option that was added in the latest patch is very nice looking too.

Unlockable arcade games puts your old arcade skills to test. Loderunner anyone?

Check actual gameplay videos to get a better picture of what this game is and skip the stuff on the store page. Store page gives a false impression there are adventure elements in the game. In reality they are non-existent.

Tower 57

Tower 57

Have you ever had the rug pulled out from beneath your feet? No? Well, if you’re a fan of classic top down shooters like The Chaos Engine and Alien Breed, and would like to experience that sensation, then look no further. Tower 57 wants to fitfully delight and then cruelly dismay with the capricious hand of disappointment, recapturing the days of the A500 and then ultimately failing to maintain that quality. And to think it starts off so promisingly…

TL:DR;

A short and challenging game (in its current build 21.19). Good music (but short tracks which will stick in your mind after a few hours of hearing them), good pixel artwork and animation. Does have many bugs which still need ironing out although not game breaking. Worth a go if you like games like Chaos Engine. Recommended (but with reservations).

I backed the kickstarter for Tower 57 having seen the artstyle and reading about the plans for the game - it was just very appealing, particularly coming from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Tower 57 is one of those games that you want to love and it does have a lot going for it. The artwork is brilliant, fitting the game and having a very “Chaos Engine” style to it. The animation and controls are good, giving the player a fluid movement which you need in the games more frantic moments.
