Red Sector

Red Sector

Fun arcade style game that gives you that, “I want to complete the next level” feeling. Still early doors but I feel sure the road-map of improvements will be coming soon.

There are a bunch of things I like about this game. Start with the creative “sector” element of an arcade shooter. Moving to different sectors to clear out before giving the player the decision as to where they want to go next makes it a bit more controllable while breaking up the action in parts.

I also like the visuals. Simple but appealing too.

Really nice product!

This game is a great experience and I really enjoy it! There are a bunch of characters you can unlock who all have slightly different play styles, and it honestly feels natural and fun to unlock them. There are a ton of items and achievements and it really challenges you. This is not one of those games where you can just press a button and instantly win every time - it takes strategy to survive, which makes it feel really rewarding. Worth the buy for sure!!

Lake of Creatures

Lake of Creatures

Lake of Creatures is a fast-paced action fishing roguelike, where you’re on a quest to hunt down a mythical lake monster. Increase your odds against the beast by finding loot, while traversing through randomly generated lakes riddled with hostile creatures. Catching and selling fish is mandatory, since buying more equipment will further improve your chances of success.

FEATURES:

- Randomly Generated Runs

Each time you start a new run, new lakes are generated containing different enemies, items and layouts! No run will be the same.

- Combat Modifying Item Synergies

The items you collect define a run. If you manage to find items that synergize well together, you might become an unstoppable killing machine. Getting overpowered is always fun.

- Exciting Fishing

This game doesn’t portray fishing like in real life, because in this game the fish actually does bite. You don’t have infinite time to wait for the bite though, as the night approaches fast bringing out scary ghosts, who lurk in the bushes.

- Fast-Paced Juicy Combat With Roguelike Elements

Satisfying twin-stick shooter, with classic roguelike features, like permadeath, random world generation and gameplay modifying items.

I have thought about this game a lot since 2012. Sure it isn’t that great as a complete package, but there is something really special about it. Maybe if Rich had more time to add content or some help, this game would have really been something extraordinary. What we got is great but flawed nonetheless. I hold this title dear to my heart for inspiring me to enter the industry, and for being a labor of love that never quite reached the heights it could have.

To me, PSC is very bittersweet. I don’t know how Rich is doing. I wish him the best. But this game gained little traction. I can’t imagine it could sustain a career for long. Everything about the game oozes with a love for gaming. The controls are crisp and the main loop of clearing out ships on pro-merc is a blazing fast expedition of twitchy reflexes and planning. But that is all there is. Every level feels the same, which is a massive shame. A game like this could have really left a mark on the indie scene, but it just couldn’t dress its beautiful bones in enough meat. This is likely the result of the project being a solo endeavor. Making a game is REALLY hard, especially when you are alone. Props to Rich, but I wish there was more. 9 years later and I still wish for a sequel to go deeper.

Is’s not clear at first how good this is.. The engine sure as hell feels nice to handle, easy and a pleasure to use and I would wager that they have play tested this pretty decently,

It seems a simple game, but apart from when it becomes harder in the later levels (and perhaps hard difficulty) the effort to kill things and to frag your way through level feels what I would describe as ‘Pleasantly taxing’ and the action is quite enjoyable.

The grenade system is infact one of the best aprts of this game, as the guns are not upgradeable (whcih this game could benfit from having) and can be a bit boring to use ALL the time; the grenades on the other hand add a very nice amount of variety and fun. You can create combos, set up multikills and manipulate your enemy fatally, which is seldom seen in many games, and I think that was the best part of Doom, where enemies could be manipulated to kill each other and die at your environment’s hands, not yours(at least directly)…

I just got this game for PC and have played it for maybe an hour total. While it seems like it could get fun, the initial play is very slow, as in your little submarine moves very slowly. And many common enemies require a TON of damage before they die. So you’re basically just pounding away with your very weak starter gun with no weapon upgrades. Some small bad guys take like 20 hits to die. The first boss is just a war of attrition for you to hold down your shooter and steer, bouncing around in this little room with the boss and your pea shooter. Boring. Not hard per se, just tedious. Also, there seems to be a bug where when you return to a saved game, if you hit the A button on your pad it freezes and you have forcibly shut down the program to get moving. All that being said, I like the graphics and the scatalogical theme. Just wish it were more fun.

Awesome Indie Game, FUN, simple to learn, easy to pick up, the randomisation / procedural generation of levels means you can play over and over again without any issue. 2 Different modes, campaign (8 random levels) and arcade (never ending levels, basically get as far as you can.

Plus an actual COLESY GAMING skin of my own in the game. But genuinly really fun, enjoyable, well made small Indie Game.

Gemstone Keeper

Gemstone Keeper

I might write another review when I play more, but for now here is what I think after reaching the first boss. (I won’t be talking about the sound since my laptop was muted)

I had played Gemstone at Insomnia awhile ago and enjoyed it. I brought it yesterday since it was on sale and sat down to play it today. I really did enjoy it and like how simple the controls are and how simple the game is so far. I do expect it to become harder.

However, there are two things I need to make aware. The first is the bright purple light when you enter a portal and the bright red light when you beat a boss. Although I do not suffer from epilepsy, I found it too bright, harsh and sudden.

Real player with 9.6 hrs in game

While I’ve only got a couple hours on the clock with Gemstone Keeper, first impressions are really quite good. The game plays precisely as sold, there’s an interesting variety of enemy types, the moving & shooting is super smooth, the weapon combinations make for a fun arsenal, the gem collecting aspect is rewarding enough and the overall look & feel of the game, to me, has huge appeal.

The somber, suped-up ASCII art style is awesome and shows from the dev a particular reverence for the roguelikes that started it all. Enemies are all easily distinguished and the shifting environment palettes from floor to floor help change things up during a run, although the everpresent hashtag walls are an inescapable visual sameness. There’s a variety of trippy screen effects (identified in-game as “mists”) that distort & obfuscate the play area, from watery ripples to a rapidly pulsing screen blur to just straight up fog-of-war-ing the edges of the viewport. These add flavour and interest to the floors where they occur but I must admit the pulsing effect makes me a little queasy; I understand their gameplay-altering intent but some control over the intensity of these effects would be most welcome for sensitive players.

Quick Rundown:

–———————-

The good: Gameplay mechanics are solid, if a bit simplistic.

The bad: Exceptionally difficult to find others to play with.

Verdict: A hopeful 6/10 in its current state. Fun for a quick romp but disappointed about not having enough friends to play with. Interface, matchmaking, and netcode need a few tweaks.

Potential: 8/10 with a solid-buy recommendation if matchmaking gets an overhaul. Once the multiplayer community gets up and running,
