So yeah… if you read the reviews and see warnings of “dying over and over and over,” it’s correct - so if you’re the type of person who would get frustrated by that, this probably isn’t your game. HOWEVER - I can say with certainty that the game is at least FAIR… just hard. So, you’re never going to be able to say, “That was completely unfair, and there’s no way I could have avoided that.” No… you’ll be saying, ah, man, if I had just darted to the left a millisecond sooner…

So this game is hard. Very hard at some points. The amount of bullets that come at you is unreal. You collect your little power-ups that help a little… you dart around trying to power up your gun or shield… You chip away, bit by bit, at the insane bosses. You die. Over, and over, and over. Then, when you finally strike that killing blow… you just sit there, staring at the screen, thinking HOLY MOTHER OF GOD I DID IT.

Really fun game actually. Super difficult, great graphics, really responsive and generally just really satisfying.

UPDATE:

As you progress further in the game you do start to realise that this is like any other ‘challenge’ game or ‘boss fighting game’ in that it’s very, VERY unfair. There are points where you absolutely have to take damage or rather can’t avoid it at all. This leads to some pretty BS deaths at times.

I mention this because the devs are planning on adding an endless/survival mode where you get 1 life to do the whole campaign and are a part of a different, more hardcore leaderboard. This is just silly since the best player on the leaderboard (Gold in all levels / 100% complete / fastest time ever) takes damage in the majority of the boss fights.

Horde Of Plenty

Horde Of Plenty

I was going to post this review 3 years ago, but i didn’t, so now i am. My computer can NOT run this well even at low settings, but from what i could grasp. it’s a basic twin stick shooter. No harm, No Foul. that being said if they can make the game run better, than maybe i could recommend it

for some context I was given a code by the Devs on Christmas of 2017 or 2016 (can’t remember)

Edit: Geez they got rid of the Keyboard and Mouse, that’s a bummer

Edit 2: I have a Pentium j2900 with 4 gb of Ram so ya maybe thats why it doesn’t run well.

This was a fun and quick to pick up twin-stick shooter. The artwork looks great and I liked the fact that each level had different goals to reach to either be quick and casual for new players, or more difficult for people wanting a harder challenge.

Retrograde Arena

Retrograde Arena

I like this game. Reason: BULLETS!

Pros:

-It’s a Free-to-Play!

-It has DLC so you never stop playing! I haven’t bought them, so I can’t really confirm.

-The UI is…90’s?

Cons:

-Most of the time, users online is AI instead of actual users.

-The max player level is 20, and it appears that I’m the only player that has this level.

Suggestions:

-Game Mode: Survival. Free-for-All. Just like Last Man Standing; Instead of 5 wins, there’s lives instead(hosts can pick a certain amount from 1-20); It could use every map.

Put a few hours in guys before writing a review… I see a few negatives where they haven’t got the idea at all :D

Recoil is your friend not your enemy! - It is faster to move from your recoil than the actual movement controls (controls just add some fine tuning)

The gameplay is pretty much perfect, weapons are balanced and extremely varied. Imploder is a bit OP but it’s slow and can be dodged/deflected.

For the future I would like to see some team modes added, specifically CTF on a bigger map. The weapons would rly suit that mode, i.e sniper to camp your own flag, shotgun/mg to rush theirs. Boosting teammates with your own bullets etc! Maybe with one of the superweapons spawning in the middle of map.

Vectorium

Vectorium

While Vectorium is a quality arena shooter, it all feels a bit too standard. It checks all the right boxes, except the ‘innovation’ one. I would also say that if you plan on playing with a keyboard and mouse, it feels more like an excercise in memorizing the order of buttons to press. Something more akin to DDR or something. It’s hard to explain.

Pros:

+The crisp artwork and interface is nice

+The price is fair

Cons:

-There is nothing new here; this has all been done before

TL;DR: Probably the best twinstick shooter ever made. Why are you even looking at this review? Play the free demo and then buy the full game when you inevitably love it.

The good

  • It’s a blast, plain and simple. Blowing up robots with the various weapons, powering up your weapon, dodging bullets, lasers and mines, stacking up immense combos and multikills… there is a lot of classic arcade twinstick action to be had here.

  • There are 9 playable characters to choose from, each with really unique weapons. No two characters play alike.

I’ve played this game for 25 hours as of this review, but AAC is already one of my favorite games. It’s extremely addictive, and this game caused the first time I’ve ever had strain in my directional key fingers in my ~25 years of PC gaming. It was a subtle ache that felt so good because it reminded me how much fun I’d been having.

The art style is modern futuristic. The music is pumpin' and really gets you into the game. The sound effects are absolutely perfect. The characters are simultaneously cute and cool in every way, and each has their own unique style. I love them. The simultaneously cute and cool style of this game sets it apart from any other futuristic game I’ve ever played.

Knighty Night

Knighty Night

Knighty Night is a fantastic game that can be completed within a few hours. The fascinating story that follows a brave night traversing through four different parts of a haunted land, fighting ghosts and the traps they set up to keep the knight from defeating the evil that plagues the area. Unlike many indie games that stick to a 2D style, this game takes full advantage of Unity by pushing 3D graphics, animations, and a birds eyes camera to follow the player. Not only does the game look beautiful, it sounds beautiful. Every sound in the game plays perfectly with what it is complimenting on screen. But if you like your game silent, this game has the ability to silence just the SFX, Music, or both if that’s what you’re into. Like the sound, this game has video settings that allows your game to be windowed, fullscreen, and different resolutions so no monitor will feel left out.

Nex Machina

Nex Machina

Having never played a twin-stick shooter in my life, Nex Machina posed quite an enigma. But one thing was clear to me - shoot things before they shoot you. And so I did, and immediately fell in love with the flow of the game.

I need a hero!

There isn’t much to say about the story. It’s your typical humans invent AI, AI sees they are idiots and decides it’s time for spring cleaning on Earth, so a decked-out hero is sent to stop it.

But who cares about the story when you literally fight a robot version of Donkey Kong. It’s all about the gameplay my dude, as that’s what stole the show; The swift, extremely tight and responsive controls, fun and challenging boss battles, varied enemy design, and just the overall flow of the game. All of it is simply outstanding.

Real player with 38.3 hrs in game

I’m writing from just 15h of playing it, but I believe I can say what this game is about. It want to give us game “that used to be”. Coming from over 20y old studio Housemarque that made too many PlayStation arcade exclusive games and teaming up with one of the biggest names from days of the arcade, Eugene Jarvis who made in 80’s for Williams Electronics games like Defenders and Robotron 2084. And what this is is Robotron for 2017.

Gameplay

Controlling is basic twin stick shooter. Other then that there are just 2 more buttons - special weapon and dash which are quite self explanatory. Shooting is rapid and constant, so while aiming direction might seam most important stuff to worry about, your positioning and maneuver are what makes you win..
