Shakedown: Hawaii

Shakedown: Hawaii

Shakedown: Hawaii is the follow-up to Retro City Rampage.

Retro City Rampage (aka RCR) in my mind, was a sleeper hit of an indie. So how did VBlank manage to follow it up?

The gameplay in Shakedown: Hawaii is nearly identical to that of RCR, and so nearly instantly I felt quite comfortable with the controls. Mechanically the game seems rock-solid, which isn’t always something games of this nature get right, so it’s worthy of praise.

Shakedown: Hawaii sort of tones down the parodic elements that Retro City Rampage was known for by a lot, and while that might sound like a good thing since a common critique of RCR was how it was far too “in-your-face” about parodying pop culture of the 80s and 90s, I’m not so sure the comedy Shakedown: Hawaii goes for really “hits” all that often. Most of the jokes seem to elicit rolling eyes, rather than laughs.

A kiddie version of GTA2 with some business management.

Nice, easy, colorfull, pleasantly funny, sympathic.

Probably its very easy to identify with the maincharacter since he still lives in the 90s and is confronted with the modern business life. So its a great game for guys who played GTA 1 or 2 when it came out.

Further its not that hard like GTA was. You can’t die, you can restart every mission, you can get health on every corner, cops are kinda brainless, no long searching for special cars to sell, no blood (I am missing that!)… so Millenials will also have their fun from a different view without any big skills, effort or heart attacks.

You get what you pay for BUT its not a bad start to a game. All the mechanics work as intended which is rare for a game so early in development. If the developer continues to update I believe more people will find this game.

Space Scavenger

I absolutely love this game. In a nutshell, you are trying to survive four levels of “alternate space” – a normal area, an infected area, a solar-fire area and a robotic area. The thing is, the tiny scavenger ship you start with will never make it but you can “MacGyver” a passible fighting ship off the things you scavenge along the way (or possibly purchase in a shop). This part of the game, crafting the ship, is just as much fun as the actual fighting, trying to figure out how to make everything fit (and yes, if your ship is really huge and unbalanced, it will handle like a truck.

The visuals, the game play, and everything the RedCabin team have added and improved on is amazing! Im so happy I got the chance to talk to the team and ask questions, and learn more about the game itself. These guys deserve all the praise they get when it comes to this game.

Pros: The game has great visuals, handing for both controller and mouse/keyboard, and fun game modes. The game challenges me all the time to do better as everyone who plays is put to the test during the daily challenge. Even the music and sounds are fantastic, and very relaxing to chill to.

Titan Attacks!

Titan Attacks!

Absolutely glorious remaster of the classic Space Invaders game. Innovative, advanced, and scores of fun to be had.

When aliens living on Titan, Saturn’s moon, decide to attack, they lay waste to Earth’s military forces. Well most of it. You are the last remaining Tank Commander on Earth, and you are one bad mofo. Battle your way across Earth to stop the invasion, and then you take it to the skies as you hit the Titans' outpost on the Moon, and obliterate it. Next stop, the Titans' Martian colony. They wiped out all the little green men also and need to pay. After Mars, you find yourself on Saturn, and the enemy forces are strong. But not as strong as when you reach Titan itself, taking on the nest of the alien scourge to nearly end our way of life… and the poor Martians.

Titan Attacks! is a retro, arcade, 2-D shooter where the nameless Commander fends off the Titan invasion with his trusty pixelated tank.

The game commences on Earth then progresses to new zones. Zone progression occurs when its boss is defeated. There are a total of five zones, each containing twenty levels, with their own unique design. Once all five have been defeated, it loops back to Earth, albeit with a slightly higher difficulty.

The game mechanics are fairly straightforward; aim & kill. Fortunately, that doesn’t do Titan Attacks! the justice it deserves. The mechanics conspire in such a way to exude a simple & fun experience. There are a number of boosts & improvements that can be purchased between levels to mitigate your success. For example, there are powerful area-of-effect bombs, weapon add-ons, additional shielding & more. Currency is derived from killing enemies & also capturing them. Capturing enemies adds a unique dimension to some situations, as doing so can be lethally dangerous, but extremely profitable. The Titans have a wide arsenal of ships & weapons that change in function & attitude from zone to zone, which can easily lead to your undoing if not cautious. There are bonus rounds that gauge your accuracy & reward you accordingly so keep nimble. These rounds occur between levels, after every seventh level.

Vermitron

Vermitron

Very cutesy action game with old school art. If you are up for a retro adventure and like exploration, give it a go!

It doesn’t look that challenging, but it’s not easy. Also, there are some mechanics I didn’t get at first, but you learn as you progress more in the game.

Real player with 9.8 hrs in game

TL;DR: Give Vermitron a shot.

When most people think of twin-stick shooters, they think of raw micro mechanics. Disciplined aiming, shooting, and dodging, instead of careful, methodical thinking. Tibor Fobel embraces the later, fabricating a retro and tower defense hybrid. The result: a solid, old-school action game that deserves more attention.

Vermitron follows an intrepid astronaut, defending an endangered flower from invading insects. Player’s progress level-to-level, descending further into an infested base. Winning a floor is simple: blossom your flower by collecting three watering cans. However, hungry pests will be squirming to your base, so you’ll have to defend your plant along the way. Slaughtering worms and flies is easy. The trouble comes when picking up a watering can, which spawns a wave of insects. You also become slower, barely moving faster than a grub. Without a base defended by armed towers, your flower will be easy pickings as you travel back.

Edit: This game is chugging right along. Still recommend, still think $10 is too much. But if it keeps going, it’ll be worth it in no time.

Ok. Here we are a month and a half in. I just picked up this game because the partner saw it and said it looked like something I would like. I did not realize it was pre-alpha, I just jumped in. Bought it for both of us. We’ve both put about or close to, 10 hours into the game, each.

I want to like this game mainly because I don’t wanna be wrong about spending $10 or go through the refund process. I am really hoping the Dev’s listen to gamer suggestions and improve this little project.

Real player with 18.4 hrs in game

This is currently pre alpha, and that taken into consideration, i could still not recommend. It is utterly unplayable 5 min in with frames counting 1/min.

I’m gonna wait it out and come back in a year or two. You should do the same, unless you wish to support the devs or just have fun money to spend with little return.

Edit: after another 4+ hours of gameplay, most of which spent on just getting the game off the ground, there are additions to be made.

Hey.

So, i checked it out again as pr your recommendation. I’ve sort of completed the game - in the way that the game’s broken, inhibiting further progress through the story.

UTOPIA 9 - A Volatile Vacation

UTOPIA 9 - A Volatile Vacation

Definately one of those smaller scale fun indie games, I don’t see this game as becoming a big blockbuster, but I do see it as a passion project and being enjoyable for what it is, which in my opinion, is quick, mindless fun with just enough replay value and interesting elements to keep you invested

Let me break things down with what makes this game (Will call it Utopia 9 for short just to make things easier) an interesting and quite funny game, as it does do some things that are expected/have been done before, but first up it doesn’t do those things badly, and secondly, where the game does do different/new things are a tad weird, but in a good/inovative way

Real player with 15.3 hrs in game

Seriously, why isn’t this game more popular ? It has a great visual style, a very good gameplay that has managed to strike a perfect balance between tactic and mindless slaughter, it has a lot of weapons, and since you can dual-wield every one-handed weapons, there’s many, many combo to try !

I love the big splatters of pinkish blood, and the impact of weapons, whether melee, explosive, shotgun-like, laser-like or regulars feels very satisfying. You’re not just hiting sprites in a videogame, you can really feel them exploding to bits … it just feels great, i dunno.

I got a key from the developer so thank you for letting me try your game.

I wanted to try this game because I enjoy top-down horror games like this, sometimes when I was playing I couldn’t pick up items for some reason took me a while to figure out how to get into my inventory but that’s just me i’m thick.

I went to the hospital but couldn’t find any trace of the person I was looking for but again maybe I wasn’t looking in the right place.

Overall I really liked it and gave me retro vibes of playing back in the 80’s and 90’s I made a video with no commentary just having a look at the gameplay.

Great Indie twin stick shooter, to me has a kind of DOS influence in some aspects which was cool and the game let me play it however I liked. There are some really moreish levels, also feels good when you get your cube set up just right. I feel like the dev put a lot of work into this.

Had a great experience playing this game at EGX 2019 and I have been keeping an eye out for this game ever since. The game is fantastic! This is my first tower defence game ever and it is a great intro to the genre. I have a great time playing this game and time goes by quickly as it can be very addictive. Killer soundtrack too, really fits in well with the game could turn you into a BEAST!

It’s not awful but not great either. Mines also count as towers… which is dumb since you have a tower limit number next to a mine limit number. The difficulty is wack as fuck. Love TD and have played and beaten all TD games that arent garbage but in this game shit happens and nothing fucking nothing you can do about it… Support shield tower is total shit as you can’t put towers even close to each other. Game feels incomplete. I want to recommend but not yet. Purchase only when on sale
