epsilon wars

Great vibe, cool music, clean graphics. And harder than you expect.

Like, I’m not that dumb, right? Maybe? I have decades of experience with gravity, this shouldn’t be a problem…

Game is what a $5 indie title should be: knows what its doing, does it well

This a refreshingly relaxing game of intergalactic warfare. The musical score lulls you into a false sense of security while your opponent is busy planning your demise. The gravitational pull of the planets makes for a fun strategical aspect and the random map generator allows for endless universes. An entertaining game for sure!

Fun little game where you shoot nukes across a planet to blow things up doing your best to adjust for things like distance, gravity, and spin of the planet. Also it’s only $1, would recommend.

Star Traders: Frontiers

Star Traders: Frontiers

Ok, I have been on Steam for 10+ years. I have purchased probably about a hundred games during this time. This is the first time I write a steam review for the game, which by itself might tell you something… :)

TLDR: This game is really amazing. Assuming of course that you enjoy turn-based combat and very deep strategy games.

Now, turn-based strategies (and RPGs) have always been my two favorite genres in computer games, and I’ve played majority of the most well known titles in these genre over the last two decades. Star Traders is not the best game in this genre. But it is one of the top 5, in my opinion. Of all times.

Star Traders is an engrossing and highly detailed sandbox simulator that’s grabbed my attention in the same way that the original version of Sid Meier’s Pirates did back in the 80s, when I was still playing on the C64. This is a slow-paced game with an emphasis on planning and crew management, and really sells the feeling of having to manage a complicated starship with lots of interacting systems. It’s a constant exercise in balancing different priorities. I can pay this game a high compliment in saying that in the course of just a few hours, I usually find myself making several dozen difficult and meaningful decisions that require a lot of thought – and then I can clearly see how the consequences of those decisions play out over time.

Flotilla 2

Flotilla 2

Got me hooked instantly

Got this game on sale, but honestly it’s well worth the (already cheap) full price. Started playing and went through the first 20 scenarios one after the other. It’s like eating potato chips, once you start it’s hard to stop.

You control a fleet of blue ships facing up red ships. The size and composition of the fleets vary from scenario to scenario. The objective is to eliminate all enemy ships, which you have to accomplish using your ships' characteristics, the environment and strategy. There’s no story or campaign, it’s just scenario after scenario (I think 100), with increasing difficulty.

Flotilla is quite beloved on Steam. An utterly solid, understated turn-based strategy game with whimsical story encounters and accessible but challenging combat set to classical music. It was utterly unique. Utterly Blendo.

Flotilla 2 brings back that unique dance of ships with its one rule ‘HIT THE REAR OR THE BOTTOM’ to damage, in a very VR way and benefits massively from it.

Deep Space Battle Simulator

I found this on-sale in some Sci-Fi Steam section, then I googled it, then I got it for my friend and I and we’ve loved it. You can hardly tell it’s an early access game- I have played for almost seven hours without finding a single bug! My recommendations would be to:

1: Add more classes and weapons. Maybe a Medic (TF2 inspired skin?) who could have a slightly increased self healing rate, and an ability to made some sort of mini tether-heal machine, like in the Medical Bay. I think that more weapons would also be cool, especially weapons in favor of one thing, and not the other- like a blowtorch. A blowtorch could be a very short-rage secondary that does high damage to doors and robots, but very low damage to players, or maybe a bomb or C4 that can deal very high damage to door and entities, maybe even the ship, but is a one time use item. Or maybe you can tie in the C4, blowtorch, add a pistol, and you could even make a demolitions expert class!

Great multiplayer game!!!

Here are some details: There can be 6 people on each ship, so 12 players total in PVP matches, or just 6 people in one co-op session vs the AI. The graphics do what they are suppose to do: Be there and convey all the actions going on. There will be times where it looks like to super ships battling it out with all the laser fire going on. That is about it with graphics. The game has pretty in-depth combat with variety of strats you can use to win against both computers and players. Want to focus on defense and getting your pilot ships to do damage? Dooooo it! Want to focus on moving your Capital Ship in for some crazy maneuvering with Gauss Cannons/Laser weapons and the super laser - Go for it. Want to break open a hangar and steal enemy ships or blow up some systems/people? Viable and fun.

Flotilla

Flotilla

TL;DR: Great fun for the humor, visual style and tactical combat. Less satisfying for the fact that it’s game over after a set number of jumps and the core gameplay might get boring within a short span of time. If this game attracts your attention I would recommend waiting for a sale unless it really appeals to you.

Flotilla is going to be a hit-or-miss kind of game depending on your tastes, but I recommend it for its unique concept, satisfying core gameplay, and odd sense of humor.

Let’s start with the good points: It’s got a certain vibe and atmosphere that worked for me, both in terms of simplistic visual appeal and the tone of the events that you can encounter during each adventure. I admit that both the graphics and worldbuilding/humor aren’t for everyone.

Real player with 21.8 hrs in game

Flotilla is a very fascinating take on space exploration. There is no saving, you are the captain, and you are stuck with a fatal disease that will take your life in a predetermine amount of turns. Flotilla offers a lot of real time choices that directly affects your fleet of ships. Some scenarios include saving a group of space-llamas and adding them to your fleet, or destroy them for ship upgrades. The combat is turn based and takes place on a 3D plane; you can command your ship to fly in any direction and fire at enemy ships. With tons of combat choices and flanking decisions your head might explode from strategizing, as a result I can’t recommend this game to strategy noobs. However, if you use to fight alongside Napoleon and George Washington back in the day, I highly recommend this game. Oh ya just play hardcore mode, in normal mode you just end up dead faster from your “disease”. There is virtually no difference in gameplay difficulty by playing in hardcore over normal.

Terraformers: First Steps on Mars

Terraformers: First Steps on Mars

Interesting theme, the graphics are simple but cool, the music is nice, it does run on GNU/Linux, but after eight hours of repetitive play, I wouldn’t call this a civ strategy kind of game, but more like a deck building card game, with lots of randomness, which gets you nowhere. You just need to be lucky to get the right cards at the right time for the right random spots to get a better score. No matter how good your planning is, there is too much luck involved. Maybe the 30 days span of a gameplay is too short for seeing the bigger picture, this is just a demo after all, but that’s my take on the current game. I do wish the devs good luck and I hope the final game offers a better experience.

A pretty solid board game

Game is very reminiscent of the popular board game Terraforming Mars, with some slight changes.

  1. Your starting hand is always the same 2 cards

  2. Beyond Oxygen, H2O and Temperature, there’s a nebulous “atmosphere” terraform setting

  3. Ever 10 years you select a leader, who has special abilities and traits that can be used on your turn

  4. Pop happiness is measured and scored.

Overall its fun for a few play throughs, but with the same 6 leaders, same starting hand, and hard 30 turn limit, you’ll only have fun for a bit.

Space Cats Tactics: Prologue

The demo looks pretty nice, though it can be a bit glitchy at times, but still it gives a great view of what’s to expect on the full game.

The combination of turn based Tactic, a little bit of RPG, and some strategy seems to work well in harmony, the zoom-in-out of the camera let us go in as detailed as the crews on board or as far as the space area outside the ship. Though this isn’t the 1st game i owned with this design, it’s still fun nevertheless, and i am starting to like this genre the more i play them. But hey, gotta be honest, it’s the cats i am after… lol! :3

I stumbled across this game well looking over steam for a new game to play for my boardem… and well I LOVE this game so far the demo is well made and the story seems like it could add up to somthing and the devs art style is just AMAZING but I do have alot of issues to for one the first time I booted up the game it was full of bugs and crashed tryed again and it worked without issue but it is pretty bug filled and that makes sense for a pre alpha game tho tbh but add it to your wishlist and id wait for the 2022 game if you wanna really play this game for real rather then a demo but so far it looks amazing! good game! its a free demo try it out and if you like it then add to wishlist and if you dont then ignore theres not much to lose if you get the demo!

Approaching Infinity

Approaching Infinity

Send help. I put 60 hours into this game in one week. I’ve lost control of my nervous system. I can’t stop thinking about this game. I’m ducking obsessed!

Approaching Infinity is by far the best game in this type of genre that I’ve ever played. What sort of genre? Well, the trading/planet exploration/ship combat/character and ship customization/space sim genre. You’re basically captain of the Enterprise, except the Enterprise comes in a bunch of different flavors.

The game isn’t perfect, but you should know the background of its history before judging. This game is actually years and years old. The developer, Bob, worked under a publisher for a while, but they were run by greedy idiots. They kept actively sabotaging him to make the game worse. It took him years for the game to fall into such a bad state that they finally sold him the rights back for pennies on the dollar. Now that Bob owns the rights, he’s jumped back into fixing the bugs, errors, glitches, and major oversights caused when a publisher is garbage.

Please read this comment if you are hesitating whether to buy this game. Because I remember 1 week ago, I also wasn’t sure about it.

Short Version - Freaking buy it if you like sci fi/exploration/planet and wreck scavenging - just do it! This game is purely amazing, fun and mindblowing!

Long Version

Game is roguelike, with very nicely done balance, it is always challenging, always one step behind you, but at the same time, it gives a lot of satisfaction - infinity idea is amazingly implemented here, everything is scaling. So however long you play, there’s always something new, powerful after next corner.
