Radioactive

Radioactive

Radioactive is a turn based strategy game of nuclear war. The idea is simple: pick a Missile Silo, set the angle and range to your target and click Fire. Missiles will creep across the map of the world to destroy the enemy, so the game is a mix of turn-based and real-time play. An ideal game for several people, up to four players can take it turns to play.

Featuring Airbases, Aircraft Carriers, and Submarines to fire from, plus Factories, Cities, and Air Defences, Radioactive is easy to learn, yet has hours of depth and playability. Every game be highly customised, with lots of maps to choose from, and total control over the types of unit you play with and the exact difficulty level.

US and THEM

US and THEM

This is one of those unique strategy games that can only come from small companies and low budget projects. It features a simulation of the Cold War period where the worse versions of Communism and Capitalism clash. Under the appearance of democracy and respect both parties undermine each other through subterfuge, breaking their economy to break support in the ruling party, gaining political support and finally provoking a revolt. No difference between ones or others.

As in good strategy games, they are difficult and you fail strepitously if you don’t understand what are you doing. It comes easier after that. Fortunately, despite the spreadsheets, the game is not that complex that cannot be understood, and experimented in various strategies. Wanna conquer the space, go nuclear, play James Bond? An economic victory? A fight over the resources? Do you fancy assassinating Che Guevara or the Queen of England? Dream of the USA revolting to Communism? Take a seat!

This was one of the games I hesitated twice on… all the people giving negative comments did influence my decision, and I did wait until it was on sale. Yet, something drew me to look at the comments deeper.

I love cold war games, I see it as one of the most interesting periods of human history and I love to play it out in an alternate history.

The good:

It’s fairly simple to learn, even if the tutorial misses a few points. The tutorial covers some basic UI items and some concepts, though does lack some info on the occasional game play mechanic. Of course, after your first or second play through, you easily start to catch these. Suggestion… click on things, check what buttons become avalible, and which grey out. Read through the text on the screen, it’s usually all there.

Can we have character customization, and also-I don’t know how to actually stir conflict in nations, is it the nuclear testing? Because I’m trying to do the Covert Ops and I don’t actually know how to do the tasks given, nor does it show any indicator saying that the covert op is complete. Can anybody help?

Other than that, this a really good game, I love it already, and you guys should keep developing it! It’s a very educational game, and also fun to know you can lead something! I recommend this game.

Terminal Conflict

Terminal Conflict

Edited review at 106 hours played.

I would definitely recommend this game for anyone interested in the cold war. I haven’t played the game ‘Twilight Struggle’ myself, but I hear it is quite like that game and I reckon if you like that game chances are good you’ll like Terminal Conflict too.

I think game captures the essence of the cold war quite well - USSR vs USA, proxy wars and managing the home front while you’re trying to achieve your goals. Intelligence is a big part of the game, especially with the Eyes Only DLC. War is abstracted, but still challenging.

Real player with 168.3 hrs in game

In this Cold War strategy game, you assume command of either the USA or the USSR. You compete with the enemy by influencing regions, recruiting historical leaders to your cause, sometimes outright engaging the enemy forces in combat as well. Both factions have unique events, decisions and leaders. Literally every singleplayer playthrough can result in a different conclusion as the AI is dynamic and provides a challenge on its own, although its still no match for an experienced player. One thing to note though, the game is more focused on the political machinations of the Cold War, rather than military. Funding, spying, sometimes even assassinating your way to victory. Despite this, of course, military units still play a large part in the game.

1953: NATO vs Warsaw Pact

1953: NATO vs Warsaw Pact

A must-buy for any Wasteland veterans, especially modders. Looks great, runs smooth, and the possibilities are endless. We’ll need a navy for Norway, armies for Israel, etc., but that’s part of the bargain. It’s all very easy to do with Notepad ++. I just copied all the commanders from Time of Fury, made the necessary text changes, and have 100 commanders. Of course, I have no interest in building a game with the actual historical military commanders from 1953 :)

In fact, I am considering downgrading the superpowers' unit levels to maybe “3” to give them more to research, while Hungary would be Level 1. Also interesting to bring Turkey into the mix on the NATO front to give USSR something more to worry about. Not really interested in the nuke part of the game, but that may well be very important for the design.

Always choose Warsaw!

So I start the game up and are greeted to some screen adjustments. I type it in and proceed to the main screen. Here I can chose to do a fast game, or simply customize a match.

I thought the game was a simple war game in the style of similar games such as the war aspects of Civilization series and age of empires, but as I would discover, there was nothing simple about this game.

I start a match as a NATO country, one of the two factions you can join and NOTHING on the screen makes any sense. I tried to press some buttons, but nothing happens. The game has no tutorial to teach you how to play the game, so I am officially lost. I find the “next turn” button and 5 minutes of the other countries turns go by. At this moment I was so bored from looking at the computer make it’s moves, that I then did nearly nothing and said next turn and the 5 minute hell continued.

Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm Player’s Edition

Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm Player’s Edition

This is an excellent game that combines playability with a design philosophy that rewards authentic gameplay. You give your subordinates broad directives and waypoints, which they will carry out to the best of their abilities. The game abstracts the busywork and assumes that your subordinates are handling their own responsibilities. Fire support can be automated in case plotting artillery targets becomes tedious. Battle command becomes the player’s main concern over micromanagement. It’s very easy to plot out a battalion or brigade-size action and coordinate timings between the component units.

Real player with 1271.8 hrs in game

A very strange beast of a game, aiming to tackle myriad of unique aspects that are rarely represented in games of similar nature. Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm is not only a treat for fans of turn based strategy games, but also a must have for ‘Cold War-turned hot’ scenario fans, meaning those who liked Tom Clancy’s most famous book about same topic will feel ultimately at home with this game.

FC:RS gives us a plethora of operations and separate missions, which we can play against the AI, from any angle, or in multiplayer with hotseat mode as an option. Be warned though, it’s a hefty game, meaning battles may last hours of real time, and despite it being a sort of old school tile/hex based strategy, it very much aims to simulate the outcomes rather then entertain you as a ‘game’ in it’s strict sense. That said the simulation itself sets of to tackle so many aspects of modern warfare it still amazes me to no end how many features are being calculated over span of a turn.

Phantom Doctrine

Phantom Doctrine

As a big fan of Jagged Alliance and X-Com style games, I am enjoying this game so far. If you are a fan of the genre, I’d suggest you give it a go. Even if only to convince developers and publishers that there is a demand for this kind of game.

That being said, Phantom Doctrine feels kind of half-baked and uneven. I’ve played approx 30 hours so far. It seems generally stable and well coded. It locked up during one of the shooting animations once. No other crashes etc. The game is pretty obscure about how it works under the covers so I can’t really point to anything else I’d describe as a bug. Most of my problems with the game stem from what I’d consider to be bad design choices.

Real player with 237.9 hrs in game

Phantom Doctrine is a cold war era spy game that lives up to the premise, pitting your Cabal (a global intelligence agency) against the enemy Beholder Initiative.

There’s a real atmosphere to the game, with everything from the music to the character designs and clothing choices, to the way you use a cork board and string to piece together connections between the different pieces of intelligence you gather, all coming together to give a real feel of the 80s Cold War setting.

The gameplay itself is roughly divided between turn based tactical infiltration missions, and a pause time global map/management system campaign. The combination will be familiar for fans of games like XCOM, but Phantom Doctrine has some of it’s own elements and ideas which makes the game distinct.

Vietnam ‘65

Vietnam ‘65

Vietnam ‘65 is a turn-based strategy war game set in the la (sic) Drang Valley of the former Republic of Vietnam. (South Vietnam, if you prefer.) You start with a US Army base with some units inside, and expand from there. Expansion involves setting up a fire base to extend your zone of control and (if you prefer) forward bases where you believe they’ll do the most good. From there, you fight against Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) units of various types, send US and South Vietnamese (ARVN) infantry into villages to get intelligence on the enemy and/or raise support from the locals (called “hearts & minds”), purchase more units (or perform some actions) with the game’s version of currency (called “congressional support”), make sure units are supplied, and hope that you have at least a 50% score in hearts & minds when the mission ends. End of mission screens (win or lose) feature a US Army officer’s uniform and medal case that shows the rank you’ve achieved and progression to the next rank, along with progression to earning future medals and decorations.

Marking the beginning of a full grown offensive ground war, of the US and his allies, against North Vietnam. In a plan to destroy the enemy and his infrastructure in 12 to 18 month.

Xenonauts 2

Xenonauts 2

XENONAUTS-2 is a vast single player strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending our planet from alien invasion.

Battle the extraterrestrials in tense, complex turn-based combat across a variety of maps and missions, recovering and researching their technology to unlock new weapons and equipment!

Take a global view with the real-time strategic management layer: you must establish and develop your bases, conduct research, battle for air supremacy and try to keep the panic level in your funding regions under control.

The strategic and tactical layers of the game are directly related, with ground missions affecting the overall balance of the Geoscape and your research efforts on the recovered items unlocking new equipment for your squads and aircraft. Every management decision you make filters down to the troops you control in battle; every shot you fire could change the balance of strategic power.

Can you hold off the invasion long enough to discover a way to defeat the alien forces?

No knowledge of the previous game is required to play - XENONAUTS-2 is a standalone title with its own setting and narrative.

Key Features

  • Ground Combat: The highly-detailed turn-based combat system gives you fine control over your soldiers as they battle the aliens across multiple different mission types and numerous varied environments. The day / night cycle and destructible battlefields open up endless tactical possibilities to defeat your enemies, and your soldiers will grow stronger as they gain combat experience - provided you can keep them alive!

  • Strategic Management: A complex strategic layer allows you to coordinate the defence of our planet. Establish bases to extend your reach and use customisable interceptors to shoot down attacking UFOs, then deploy your soldiers to secure resources. Capturing crash sites can secure alien technology and live specimens for research, whereas protecting regions from alien activity and terror attacks will protect your funding and prevent them surrendering to the aliens.

  • In-depth Simulation: The structure of Xenonauts-2 is not linear; no two campaigns unfold in exactly the same way. Every element of this complex interlocking simulation has been designed to create maximum coherence between the strategic and tactical layers: small decisions can have an impact across the entire game.

  • Extensive Tech Tree: XENONAUTS-2 contains a vast variety of aircraft, vehicles, weapons, armour, and battlefield equipment for you to experiment with. and a deep research tree with over a hundred projects to unlock. Play the game the way you want to play, devising your own tactics and strategies to defeat the extraterrestrial threat!

Key Improvements from XENONAUTS-1

In addition to the new modular upgrade systems mentioned previously, here is a very small selection of key changes and enhancements:

  • Improved visuals across all parts of the game, including full 3D tactical environments with a rotatable camera!

  • A more detailed and immersive Geoscape simulation incorporating greater player choice and stronger elements of territory control!

  • More environments and maps to fight in - including our new Jungle and Boreal biomes!

  • New aliens have been added and many existing ones have been redesigned, all of which will benefit from our new and improved AI system!
