A Strategy Board Game Like No Other

The rolling hills of the battlefield lay before you as you carefully move your units into position. The clock is ticking, and the enemy is already attacking the vulnerable city near the center of the board with bomber units. Will you pull off your attack and annihilate the enemy? Or will you be outsmarted by your cunning opponent?

From the studio that created the Harpoon series comes this unique real-time strategy game set on a surreal tile-based board game battlefield. Wage war over three eras of combat: Clash swords and loose arrows in Medieval style, roll tanks and march infantry to victory in the Great War setting, and take to the skies with aerial units in the Contemporary mode. Each battle setting has its own unique set of pre-arranged battle scenarios to test your ability to use each unit’s strengths to your advantage, and to guard against their weaknesses. Put your strategic abilities to the ultimate test!

  • Engage your opponent in a game that looks like Chess, but plays like a real-time strategy game with individual unit stats, projectile attacks, and the ability to move multiple pieces simultaneously.

  • Gain the advantage by adjusting your view of the battlefield between a 3D angle and an overhead tactical perspective. Zoom in and out, and pan the camera around the battlefield to find and engage your enemy.

  • Play against the computer in 35 designed scenarios, or compete against a friend in the local two player versus mode.

Note: Original network multiplayer modes are included but, due to the age of this title, not supported for this release.

Nope. Nope nope nope!

Me: Man these reviews are so harsh! There’s no way it’s as bad as the reviews! It’s got medieval econ/sim with 4x builder themes! That’s GREAT! WHAT POTENTIAL!

2 minutes after playing: Wow this is terrible! Not even good terrible! The UI is locked on huge, the only reason it calls itself casual is to make up for being so easy your cat could play it by randomly keysmashing, and the reviews are actually TOO KIND!

1 hour later: omg I still haven’t even unlocked the cards, of course not, what is the point? I’m not even playing anymore, why did I think this would get better, if it didn’t in the first five minutes, and actually somehow managed to slide downhill from there?!

This is a simple turn based/clicker game where you control a kingdom with 4 cities in it and defend them against random events. Choose where to spend your income each turn on soldiers, buildings, crops, that sort of thing. Basically if you had Medieval Total War, removed all the combat, armies, the map, and just had 4 towns that you micromanaged a little, that would be it. This is basically one of the menus from a different, complete game.

The game doesn’t launch, it just goes into a loop on the first time setup and hangs there. Because the game cannot be played (and probably wouldn’t be worth playing even if you could), I don’t recommend it.

Star Merchant

Star Merchant

Cheaper than a cup of coffee! I’ve been gaming since the early days of home computers - seriously, my first was a TRS-80, so take it from me I’ve seen and played a lot. I had a warm deja vu feeling in the gameplay, and there are certainly similar elements to games I used to play and enjoy like Taipan, and even some elements of Santa Paravia and Fiumaccio. I have over 500 games in my library, but when I come home from work I’m really not interested in something that is going to challenge my speed and reflexes. Instead I want a game I can relax and unwind with over a cup of coffee. Star Merchant is that sort of game. It isn’t overly complex and you won’t need to spend ages learning how to play. While it wouldn’t hurt to make a few notes as you are playing, you can easily play it off the top of your head and do well. The developer has been adding a few features in the short time it’s been released and tweakig some things based on feedback in the forums, so that’s good as well. Just to wrap this up, I’ve noticed some negative feedback saying the game is broken - what a load of nonsense. People, take a look at the requirements for the game, as it is designed for a certain resolution and default font size. I’m running windows 10, and don’t have any problems. Seriously, it’s less than a cup of coffee at the moment. I know I’ve already spent several hours playing it and have my money’s worth.

Verdict: 3.5/10

I actually regret quite a bit to have to not recommend this game, mainly because it seems to be the labor of an honest, hard working and independent developer. However, that is the way I see it.

First of all, I have to say that despite some negative reviews denouncing this game as broken, I have to say I have not experienced any problems (Windows 10 with two monitors, which usually makes things more challenging).

Now, is Star Merchant a bad game? I do not think so, it is just so INCREDIBLY SIMPLE. As of February 2018 (Patch 1.26 I believe), I cannot really imaging anyone not beating this game, even playing half sleep, half drunk and half stoned (all simultaneously).

Only just started ( i understand it’s an older game - 2013 moved from Matrix to Steam ) and i love the options given - lots of settings to choose and customize your gameplay experience - clean presentation on map , ultra wide screen support , different units ( ranging from battalions to divisions ) - the abbility to switch to nato symbols + fog of war = a winning combination for me - hope the AI is competent enough ;-D - totally recommended for ww2 turn based fans !

Militia

Militia

I was on the fence about buying this because I wasn’t sure that it could keep me engaged for very long. I was pleasantly surprised to find that underneath the minimalist presentation there is a game with a surprising amount of depth that has the potential to suck you in for hours on end. I found myself saying “just one more level” until 3 AM. It’s also great if you just have a couple minutes to play.

The leveling system is a great way to measure your skill, keep the game at just the right dificulty, and raise the stakes of a single player game. It feels like climbing the mmr ladder in Dota. The puzzles are procedurally generated, so the replay potential is really limitless.

My warrior took an arrow to the knee - now my mage is wielding his battle axe…

It’s simple - simple genius.

The comparising with chess is close even though it is not 1 after 1 but 1 faction after the other. The movement patterns are simpler with their limited range but those attack patterns, swap spells and refresh abilities of your units combined with the amount of enemies vs your 3 ones makes you think - or lose. This part makes Militia much more like a table top or the fight part of a classic RPG…with 1 HP units…

SOK MAX

SOK MAX

Let me start this review by saying this is one of the hardest puzzle games I ve ever played. After playing SOK and SOK MIN I wrote the reviews saying I dont think I could beat SOK MAX but here I am and I have beaten it without any guide and with lot of patience and dozens of fails. This whole series get a huge recommend.

The game has at least 10 uber hard levels that melted my brain and on some of them I spent hours trying to solve them.To be honest the bigger the levels get in this game the easier they are.

SOK MAX sets out with a “bold” promise - it’s a follow-up to the excellent SOK, and there are… wait for it… more boxes on each level. With a different color. And they are sometimes ordered in funny patterns!

The above may or may not be a selling point for a Sokoban game, but the developer once again took the level design very seriously. Interestingly, there are two distinctly different kinds of levels. In one, you have to find the right initial steps, and then you have to work a lot to complete the level. These are usually the large levels with the many boxes. In the other, you need to consider each and every move because the game wants to kill you - much like the best levels in the original SOK. These levels are generally smaller, and sometimes start out with the mocking pretext of only one box being off target.

Super X Chess

Super X Chess

An excellent game for chess variant enthusiasts.

Game play: This game sports multiple game rules and a plethora of new fairy pieces while still keeping the core of the game intact. The tutorial and the AI make learning the new rules easy and the game offers a lot of potential for improving your strategic thinking. The AI can be adjusted from easy to challenging and either side can be handicapped material. The new scenario selector offers additional opportunities for new and exciting situations to explore. There is also a list that lets you review the games you have played which is another major plus.

For a free puzzle game it was right in my wheelhouse! Not to hard but hard enough to be interesting. Could have done without the number-matching puzzles however. I may buy the DLC pack in a day or so.

Chess Knights: Viking Lands

Chess Knights: Viking Lands

It’s been a while since I played chess and when I tried this game I could remember that beginner feeling.

I Recommend this game for those who like chess and also likes a good mind challenge.

I liked some scenario items left behind … buckets, wooden decks and wagons that block areas in board, these kind of things got rid of predicables movements and make things more challenging. I also liked the way some parts got half-covered by snow, this increase the challenge and make me think twice on choosing where to move … specially against Bishops. A little suggestion to improve a sense of progress could be some kind of icon or text that tells the current chapter and stage.

Move chess knights across varying boards to pick up pieces from one square and return them to home squares while avoiding being taken by AI driven enemy pieces.

There are a lot of issues here, the difficulty wildly varies, though ultimately never gets particularly clever and many of the puzzles become just a matter of moving one of your safe pieces back and forth until the board state lets you win.

Some levels try to limit that which is where you feel a sudden difficulty spike which just ends up being more frustrating than challenging.
