Elminage ORIGINAL - Priestess of Darkness and The Ring of the Gods

This is a really fun first-person dungeon crawler RPG (blobber). It is heavily inspired by the early Wizardry games, especially in it’s character progression and combat. The main quest has an straight-forward structure to it and there are plenty of optional quests to do as well. Some of the environments could get visually repetitive, but that’s not what you play blobbers for anyway. There were some dungeons that weren’t very interesting mechanically and felt kinda barren and ones that were completely optional as well. This game is also not too punishing for a blobber, so it might be good for beginners. Overall, this is an easy recommendation for blobber fans or for people who want to get into blobbers.

This is a great wizardry-style game. Full disclosure, I totally understand this game isn’t for everyone. But I enjoy it for what it is. It’s a great homage to classic CRPGs. I do like how after the initial dungeon the game becomes open ended. Though it can be difficult, it does give you a lot of options for characters and equipment.

Elminage is very old school in comparison to modern rpgs but the menus and navigation are really well laid out. A lot of older CRPGs suffer from clunky interfaces and thankfully Elminage does not have this problem.

Well I like it so far. To me its like a Tales of Ma’Jahael with a group and crafting and tactical combat rather than just bumping your sprite into the enemy sprite. Don’t get me wrong, ToME is a great game with plenty of depth, but..I HATE the sprite thing. Is this game fancy or flashy? Not at all, but the basic tactical combat makes it feel more like a pen and paper rpg than the aforementioned game.

I must say this game kinda snuck under my skin as I slowly realized it had more to it than I thought at first. You party is build as you want, 6 in a group and no classes. now it gets even better.

You are lost in a maze of connecting portals to different maps, (lands) and with each layer or portal you enter thru, you will get points to add to your characters build.

As in;

Weapons - mace, dagger, etc.

Professions - alchemy, tailor, 8 types.

Skills - lockpicking, linguistic, perception, 3more.

Keen: One Girl Army

Keen: One Girl Army

Remember the obligatory ice puzzles in obligatory ice dungeons in all sorts of action-adventures, where your character only stops moving when they hit a wall or obstacle? Well this decribes Keen’s overall gameplay in a nutshell. But it’s not like that navigation ever gets annoying. The levels were designed in a way that this kind of traversial becomes only hard when it’s meant to be a puzzle, otherwise the path you can choose is usually obvious and after a short time you almost forget about the restrictive movement.

Game info:

First off, I need to say, Keen: One Army Girl is such a beautiful looking game.

You’ll play as a delightfully cantankerous 8-year-old named Kim, taking on & fighting a variety of enemies in a turn-based sliding puzzle with an intriguing story you want to learn more of. Kim can only move in a straight line, stopping only at the end or until something blocks her.

A roguelite that plays with the concept of get to the final floor while maintaining a balance of health and energy.

What sets this game apart from others are the following

+It is very accessible on multiple devices (keyboard, mouse, touchscreen)

+Options for people who would like jumbo icons (visually impared)

+All assets are created by a single developer along with the level design

A very short but sweet game!

Gameplay is very fun! Managing your energy while trying to survive, killing enemies and finding the portals to the next levels as fast as you can. It’s beginner friendly, in the beginning and becomes more challenging as levels progress, but still fun!

The artstyle is pretty nice.

Overall, it’s really good and fun!

Ring of Pain

Ring of Pain

3.5/5 : Card battler heavy on the modern “roguelike”: you die a lot, over and over, but your deck improves slowly (I’m going to start calling them neo-roguelike since rogue had no such advancement). Very pretty and novel UI. Weird story. I’ve played it all the way through and I don’t have any idea what I’m supposed to get.

The worst part of the game and the reason for the low score: YOU CANNOT STOP PLAYING without losing the run. It’s the worst no-save game I’ve seen in a decade.

Full playthroughs take hours, but if you need to stop, you have to leave the game running or you lose all your progress. Not only no save, but no saved position. I have had to leave the game running for days because I had a great run going but then had silly things come up like work, sleep, cleaning, or making dinner. Perhaps the RING OF PAIN name is supposed to reference how terrible this designed defect is?

Alright, I’ll do my best to keep this review neat and concise. I will preface by saying that I tried the closed beta of this game.

Ring of Pain is a Dungeon Crawler Card Game where the player chooses to go left or right and attack monsters. You have stats and manage item slots with items found across dungeons, progressing deeper and deeper into this “ring” until you reach the end. You have Attack and Defense, Speed to determine whether you or the monster attacks first, and Clarity, which manages how much healing you get from potions, Curse chances, and additional Souls (currency) is acquired per monster kill. Item slots are individualized, meaning if you find a weapon, it goes in the weapon slot and if you find a new weapon, you have to make a choice of either chucking your old one for the new one or keeping the old one.

********** 2nd & Final Update after taking a 3 years break **********

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Ratings 10/10

This is a game that I have played and reviewed 3 years ago. At that time I spend about 100+ hours, but did not really finished the game. I reach a part where the game became too hard for me, so I stopped sometime in Jul 2016.

Now 3 years later, I felt a strong urge to replay old classics and replayed this game from the start (cos I forgot how to play this game after 3 years break). I felt in love with this game, and played it non stop for many many hours. This time I went slowly and changed classes many times so that I can get the best abilities of each class.

It was my first Dungeon Crawler and if I am asked if I feel remorse for buying it the answer is a clearly :NO. I love and hate this game at the same time.

  • Story: I just love it. It starts mysertious and keeps this feeling/vibe up till the end.

  • Characters: I love them and it broke my heart a few times trough the story. But you can understand why they act most of the time while you play trough the story.

  • Music I love the music. It fits the battles, overworld and the base.

  • Graphic/Design Just gorgeous. The game is just beautiful. I love the style of the Characters, base and the world. The Monsters look really diffrent than every other game I have played before. Nothing is the same and the style reminded me of “Dark Tormentum” (great game try it)

The Depths of Tolagal

The Depths of Tolagal

A round of applause for the developers here! They succeeded in creating a tough as nails rougelike that challenges you measure ever step and I do mean EVERY step but (for the most part) only punished the clumsy or the uninformed. I have died several times by virtue of approaching a hallway and accidentally alerting an extra orc or two and promptly getting my teeth kicked in. I have come to realization that the tactical aspect of the game is actually a good bit deeper than rpg aspect of it. Level progression unlocks triats as opposed to a solid stat boost across the board. Many of the traits simply open up intersting opportunties which require you to adjust your playstyle in order to gain an advantage. So overall I would say this game is TACTICAL rougelike more than a classic rougelike rpg.

Beta tested before the game hit steam.

The studio may not be updating anymore, but the main dev (matt) that responded to beta reports was responsive and helpful.

Fun game, gets tough at the the second to last and last map and really makes you question what load out you wanna run in terms of skills and weapons so yes, it’s worth the price. It’s pretty fun and once the difficulty ramps up you have to think about choices even more. What skills you need, more inv space, throwing weapons, push back weapons to make the enemies waste a turn, etc..

The Legend of Bean

The Legend of Bean

The Legend of Bean is a rather good RPG/adventure game on the RPGMaker format.

Not quite innovative, especially the storyline, but with a fair gameplay. At no point I felt lost like not knowing where to head to.

I appreciate that after the main quest is completed you can still travel through the whole game world in order to defeat other bosses and eventually get a 100% achievements.

I don’t care if the grammar isn’t perfect, I’m not expecting the same language level as in a book. Dialogues are perfectly understandable and that’s enough for that kind of games.

Real player with 15.6 hrs in game

The Legend of Bean is a nice, short and funny little RPG-Maker game.

While the English tranlation is poor, it’s still understandable and quite funny. The game comes at a cheap price and is worth what it’s asking for.

You play with a group of three people, and the battle system is quite uniqe. It’s fast paced, so you can do the battles really quickly. It took me about 9 hours to finish the game. After clearing the main story, you can still keep on playing, fighting some newly spawned bosses, some of them a little challenging. The good thing is, you don’t need to grind a lot, there is a merchant that sells big bags of experience!
