Steampunk Tower 2

Steampunk Tower 2

Interesting and unique take on the tower defence genre, but a lack of explanation along with a clumsily devised game, confusing campaign and poor gameplay mechanics hamper this game and make it a chore to play as it progresses.

PROS:

I quite like the concept of a tower with customizeable turrets being dropped in the battlefield. I also like the design of the stick figures operating the turrets while you see a variety of enemy AI on the battlefield.

CONS:

Customizing your turrets is downright confusing. It consists of mixing an array of scrap you receive at the end of each battle and then choosing the results that arise out of the combination of different scrap materials. Um ok? Some of the parts require for the upgrades are specialized and can only be found in cities that you have conquered. So you’re forced to basically wait as you send out the train with one agent on it until you can upgrade it. And if you don’t own the territory that houses that upgrade part, then forget it. You’re stuck. Either way, customizing and upgrading parts is dependent upon too many options.

Review - Steampunk Tower 2

RATING: 8.0 / 10 - Of Men and Steam-powered Monsters

Overview

Steampunk Tower 2 is a strategy / tower defense game hybrid with some twists to the formula. In an alternative, mid-800esque steampunk European continent, a great war is raging between the forces of The Cult and the other free nations, and is not going well for the latter. The cult, using technological superiority and military might, has subdued most of the Free Nations and its total dominance is imminent. Not everything is lost though, as there is still someone fighting: Lord Bertram Bingham, a powerful noble, is on a quest to gather the best scientists, soldiers and tacticians of the Free Nations to mount a counter-offensive against the Cult, using as a trump card the powerful Steampunk Tower, a technologically advanced battlestation deployable anywhere in brief times. And so the war against the Cult begins again.

In short: This is an AWESOME multiplayer tower defense game, but not too many people play it, so you should convince your friends to get it. You need a few hours to master all the mechanics, but then it’s great entertainment.

You and your opponent both have castles and barracks, and you need to send waves to destroy each other, while simultaneously upgrading your units and castles as well as tending to your gold mines. Gold is mainly needed for recruiting units, and as long as they are within enemy territory, they earn “battle points” for you, which you need for upgrades. This makes for some challenging gameplay, as you need gold to earn battle points, but also battle points to get upgrades to earn more gold, …

Do Not Buy!!!!!! Dev went bank rupt, no more company, no more updates, so game freezes and hard locks often. It’s a great game, I’m sad. Keeping the thumbs up because it was awesome and I’m very sad for this. Only thing it needs is some updates to work with new drivers and such. Still playable, but your experience will suffer. Sad day for a great game.

Tower Wars,

It’s not your average tower defence game. Sure it has a survival mode to play it that way but that’s not the sole action of this game. It’s a tower defender and attacker! That’s right you have to go on the offence or no matter how great you planning if you only defend you will fail. In fact if your balance of attach vs defence is even a little off you will fail. The computer baddys are tough, and may even break you heh.

This game defines 2 out of 5 stars.

This is a poor execution of the standard Tower Defense formula.

This game features:

A customizable tank, with several slots to customize your offense and defense.

  • There are a total of 2 decisions to make on parts. All other parts are just less useful filler.

  • Those two decisions are, “Which power do you want for your in fight cooldown?” The powers are, essentially, the same.

5 towers, of differing damage types and targeting.

  • This is bog standard. There is nothing new or exciting.

The art in this game is good, and there are elements of this game that are fun and satisfying. I’m hoping the game creator can make a few tweaks to make this game even better. There were some annoying timers that have been removed, so that criticism has been fixed. My current complaint is that at about level 20, I’m now completely stuck. The difficulty level has become so severe that it’s essentially impossible to progress. There needs to be some balancing. I’d recommend the game developer try to beat level 20. I’m guessing all the playtesting was on mobile. Play a runthrough from the start with only the tools provided and try to beat level 20. It’s impossible, and it’s a bummer I don’t get to play through the game. Right now, I’m just farming the survival level trying to upgrade or get to level 15 to get those crystals, but I’m failing at level 13. Currently, everything seems unsolvable in its current state. Highly doubting anyone has beaten this game on PC yet. Fix these issues, and it will be a much better game.

Iron Grip: Warlord

After many tries, me and two friends have managed to win all maps on God Difficulty (without multipliers). The core of the game is defending your base with towers, and the towers from defenses-eating tanks.

We’ve loved this game due to the amounts of strategies and fine tunning you can make to win in what seemed to be impossible (3 on God). If you like a style of game where you can try again and again and again, making small changes each attempt in order to find a winning strategy, Iron Grip might be a good try.

ANGRY RANT BEFORE REVIEW STARTS HERE:

Ignore all reviews complaining about graphics, as they have absolutely no understanding as to when this game was made. Also, ignore those reviews from people with less than an hour played. In it’s time, they were the best graphics around. And really, if you need good graphics for you to enjoy a game, that’s pathetic. Addressing those who have played less than an hour: Obviously you do not understand the game at all. Reading your reviews, I see you have absolutely zero understanding as to how the game works. It’s not a mistake that the enemies are blue and your team red. And really, who cares?

Hunters Of The Dead

Hunters Of The Dead

This game is hard to get a good idea from looking at it on the store page. It is really good though, I got it on sale and have been very pleased. It’s kind of like plants vs zombies as far as gameplay, but has much less variation in units you control. They do however add new and unique elements to it to make it not simply a boring clone of pvz which is what a lot of these games turn out to be.

The game does require a whole lot of luck in order to beat it. You are not going to beat this early on, not until you have played and died tons of times. Not until you have played and built up enough gold in order to add global upgrades for all new games. It’s good and bad in that sense, it makes it not too easy or short, but also a bit frustrating that it is almost impossible early on. I saw one review that said you don’t run into monsters that often, but I seem to get attacked 1 out of every 2 or 3 moves that I make. Part of winning is just pure luck that you click on a spot and simply don’t get attacked during the round your players are resting. If you run into an attack your first 3/4 or 5 clicks it’s going to be tough b/c your guys will be resting and you can’t do anything which just lets your village get destroyed. You could also start off and not get attacked for 6 turns in a row with time to build up a nice army. This randomness gives me so many mixed feelings on this game. I have had several games that I run into dracula on my 2nd or 3rd enemy encounter and then it’s either game over or nearly game over.

The first thing to clarify: it is a rather limited, very mediocre indie game. So, there’s absolutely no rush to buy it. However, if you do get it via some bundle, a big sale, or another occasion… It might be not too bad, for one evening.

Technically, Hunters Of The Dead is a mixture of rogue-like turn-based exploring of the city, infested with the undead plague, and a tower-defense-like real-time action, somewhat similar to Plants vs. Zombies. You have 5 lines with squares to place your troops, your base on the left, enemies move from the right end of the screen, attack your troops, if there are any in their way, or simply rush themselves to the base, to decrease some of its defenses.

Hydraulic Empire

Hydraulic Empire

This could have been a cool tower defense game, but as others have already mentioned, the balancing is way off. Some maps are literally impossible to solve unless you select the exact tower placement (and thus force the enemies on the specific path) that is required. No matter if you have ultra-upgraded towers or not, you simply will not win unless you get the path correct. While some may find this challenging, I found it tedious in the extreme - playing a level over and over. Note also that this is based on the “medium” difficulty setting. There are two settings higher than this. I doubt I will explore them.

Update: A developer responded to my review and updated the game based on the feedback. I have not had time to play through it again, but I appreciate their effort. If you read the original review below and are on the fence about Hydraulic Empire, you might consider giving it a chance. My intention was not to be the bad review that killed their business; I was genuinely frustrated at the time. I don’t know if it’s better, but they seem to be honestly trying, which is commendable. Solid game with strong roguelite feel. If you like replayability, varying experiences within runs, fun tower defense, and a good time, the game is easily worth $17 to try out and even get more content as the game develops further.

Update: The game will still randomly crashes and the “balance” isn’t balanced at all. The game is actually harder. The research system does little to make the game enjoyable. I’ll keep trying after each update; because, I WANT to enjoy this game. I love the concept. Still only have the same three bosses.

Update: Played again since there were “Updates”. Game crashed straight away even after the V1.2 crash hot fixes. Still unbalanced. Still not a whole lot to keep people engaged. I want to like it, but honestly its a dud.

Good time waster and not always easy to pass the first time round. Not as good as the first game where you can buy cards and there is some chances to get random cards and abilities, cards are pretty much fixed and no chance to buy any. Still graphics are better.

By at your own risk.

The achievements are broken, the game doesn’t give any description of anything.

The survival mission I think is a joke.

I beat the game around 14 hours but I was playing a mobile game at the same time & I replayed all levels 2 times to level up.

Pros:

I like the enemy designs

I didn’t dislike playing the game.

It’s a simple TD.

Can’t beat the price when it’s on sale.

Cons:

The game was OK

The mechanics some times feel still “mobile” compatible.

The game gives zero description of all enemies.
