Deathtrap

Deathtrap

+ Pros +

  • A very entertaining gameplay

  • A large amount of traps and skills that allow a diversified gameplay

  • A functional multiplayer mode

  • Stunning and detailed graphics.

- Cons -

  • Serious balance and design problems with certain levels.

  • A high price for a game that reuses existing models and doesn’t introduce anything revolutionary.

Gameplay

Deathtrap is a spinoff to The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing series. It’s based on the tower defence mechanics, estrapolated directly from its parent. It’s similar to Sanctum, mixing turrets and playable characters with their passive and combat skills defending a point from incoming waves of enemies.

Deathtrap is an interesting combination of tower defence and action RPG in a fantasy setting. The player has to stop an assortment of demonic creatures from reaching portals. You do this by building traps along the creatures path, and you also control a character that can move around the map and attack the creatures directly. Its similar to Orcs Must Die, but with a more elevated camera angle.

The player character can be either a warrior, rogue or mage depending on if you want to focus on melee or ranged attacks. You move with arrows/wasd, have a basic attack on LMB and upto 5 other abilities on hotkeys. These abilities cost rage/mana which is generated by using the basic attack, and there are more than 5 abilities to choose from, plus several passives, so you can build a character that suits your playing style.

Great reverse tower defense game. Easy to get hooked!

Single-player is fun, but multiplayer up to 8 players over LAN (but can fill in bots with different difficulties if you’d like) means I can blow up my buddy’s armies from afar.

Make lots of armies, blow up the other guys' armies, make bigger armies, and conquer. Multiple factions and individualized talent trees allows versatility in playstyle and adds a lot of depth to the game. 5/5.

Dwerve: Prologue

This review is further detailed in the video below.

Dwerve is an incredibly charming game that is simple to pick up but requires strategy and dedication to succeed in! As a huge fan of Tower Defense games and the NES style classics, this game is a match made in heaven that resolves the shortcomings of both genres. I am super excited for the full game and can’t wait to cover it again when it releases!

✔️Tower defense done right! Exploration, dodging enemy attacks, replacing towers and manually attacking keeps the game from getting stale like your typical tower defense games.

I Kickstarted this game based on the first 5 minutes or so of the demo. It seemed super fun and like an innovative mix on the Tower Defense genre. Now that I’m playing the prologue for a bit longer, that impression hasn’t changed. The game oozes style, and has a challenging but fun format.

So far I’m very pleased, but the two things I did notice were 1; the walking speed is SUPER slow. This seems to be on purpose for mechanics, but wow it feels like I’m taking forever to get from point A to B. I assume the levels are smaller based purely on that for the sake of getting around, but I hope there’s a way to increase that speed more than a very slow recharging dash. 2; destructible items aren’t very easy to tell apart from non-destructible things. I found myself just stopping quite a bit to see if anything was destructible nearby.

Grand Attrition

Grand Attrition

Okay, I’m not a big review writer but I found this game and thought I’d give it a go.

Things I liked:

Over all this isn’t too bad for a cheap indie game. All of the units (Normal, special, or otherwise) are actually unique with their own functions and purposes, which was rather nice. Map size goes from small to rather absurdly large. Honestly most of the standard stuff is par for the course but the things I really enjoyed are the Side-grades, the forts, the special units, and most importantly, the Talents. The side grades are all just that, sidegrades, they really change up how you can tackle a game and once I figured out that I could do that to the unit spawning buildings it really helped. The forts are these “Structures that contain “loot” that can be very beneficial for the rest of your current run. Then the special units, Some of them are spawnable units that cost a lot of resources but they all do different things aside from just attacking whats ever in front of them. Then you have the non-spawnable units which are also strange and fun to use. Finally the talents, I really love the talents in this game and it’s one of the main reasons I keep playing. They are a ton of fun to use and can really change up how you play a game. Furthermore, none of them feel particularly jarring or like you are supposed to have them. My favorite two are Explosive when touched and conversion blossom. My computer hates it but its great to watch unfold at higher difficulties.

Fun free-form strategy game that doesn’t lock you into one form of playing the game. A good way to pass the time with plenty of features to experiment with. The game has great potential and plenty of room for improvisation and improvement.

Shepherds of the Abyss

Shepherds of the Abyss

Ever since the Warcraft 3 Tower Defense community died out it’s been hard finding a solid tower defense game with an emphasis on strategy, they are usually very straightforward and don’t require much thinking. Shepherds of the Abyss on the other hand has delivered everything I have been looking for in a TD and more. While many games have abilities of some sort, they never really feel genuine, it feels like they were tossed in last minute before release, whereas in SotA you make up your own “army” consisting of some default creeps and your own Shepherds, these Shepherds all have special abilities much like DOTA/LoL and truly feel like they have their place. Items is also something SotA has done very well, you can buy items for your Sheps, some are active and some are passive bonuses, and they all feel very in-touch with the game.

Howdy, First of all I must state that I have been helping with giving feedback on this game, and did receive my key for free. That being said however, this game, even in its current state is well worth the price of admission. If you like Tower Defense and Moba style games then this game is for you. It Features several modes of play and a series of tutorial missions that are designed to help get you up to speed before you hit the multiplayer arena. For Single player modes, there are two: Survival and Classic vs. AI. So far I’ve been mostly playing the Survival modes as getting multiplayer games at the moment can be challenging. The game is still in development, so don’t be surprised if you see bugs and / or crashes. If you are unlucky enough to experience one of these bugs, please submit the crash reports to the developers! Every one helps!

Bravium

Bravium

Bravium feels like (and is) a mobile game, but I’d actually say go ahead and give it a run regardless. If you were a fan of the old Kongregate ‘Epic War’ style games, then this has a nice nostalgic feel to it. The gameplay isn’t terribly deep, but there are some constant meaningful decision points, and challenge levels that encourage you to try out a wider variety of options than you would by default. The level design seems simplistic, but does promote some different strategies and will likely make you change up your approach occasionally even when you think you’ve settled into a winning combo.

Really love this game and it has many many maps to get through,

and also a huge amount of replayability

Pros:

*Many weapons/weapon classes to unlock and upgrade

*Many Items/artifacts/spells to unlock and upgrade

*Achievements has been made as missions in game

= clear a mission to unlock a new weapon or something else.

So that is a really nice thing to see since not many games think them through like this!

Cons:

Can get a bit boring after some time since it is very grindy if you want to get everything maxed out. Also you will replay many of the same levels again on a harder challenge version

Disclosure: I did receive this for free.

After a little messing around with my antivirus and telling it to go um.. F. off with a bit of help from the developer, finally had a chance to get a thorough look into this game.

First, the graphics aren’t anything to write home about. It is a standard RPG Maker game, and I can’t tell if its using stock assets or not (I’ve not toyed around with this version of RPG Maker). Despite this, it does use them well for what its worth for a tower defense type of game.

Dwerve is a tower defense dungeon crawler RPG. It tells the story of a young dwarven tinkerer that adventures into dwarven ruins to unearth the lost technologies of the ancient warsmiths: turrets and traps, the only weapons that can protect the dwarves from Witch Queen Vandra the Wicked and her army of bloodthirsty trolls and monstrous creatures.

  • Upgrade your arsenal with over a dozen turrets and traps, each with it’s own unique upgrade tree.

  • Discover powerful artifacts: an arrow-blocking shield, dashing boots, a bouncing boomerang, a ground-shaking hammer, and more!

  • Fully dynamic lighting. Adventure through dimly lit dungeons that come to life with dynamic lights and shadows!

Backstory & Lore

In the massive hollow mountain of Mount Crowcrest, there once lived a great nation of dwarves. The dwarves discovered power stones while mining deep in the mountain. They used them to power machines and, eventually, entire cities. They lived in peace and prosperity for centuries.

Over time they became infatuated with power stones and dug deeper to find more. One day they dug too deep and unleashed the Gloomdark Hordes, an army of trolls and monstrous creatures. Once the dwarves realized that trolls turned to stone in the sunlight, they fled far from the mountain and found refuge on the sunny Hills of Brekka.

Centuries passed and, over time, the dwarves forgot their traditions and abandoned craftsmanship and innovation in favor of warring and raiding. History became myth, and myth became bedtime stories. But whispers of a long forgotten darkness echo throughout the valley of the great mountain. It can be heard in the Snoring Forest, by those who dare to enter…
