The White Laboratory

The White Laboratory

The game was very fun and entertaining. I didn’t know I would enjoy a strategy game, but I did, and this is that strategy game. It was unique in its gameplay, how you would kill enemies and turn the ones with blinking lights into usable blocks or even make things that would go on rails to transport stuff and to maybe kill an enemy on the way.

The problem I have with this game, as marvelous as I find it, is that the physics are wonky at times and sometimes something built will try to flip over when it’s built to be a specific way. I remember having a flying tech try to flip over even though I had less weight on the top and more on the bottom, lasers being on the bottom and projectile turrets on the top. It’s a pain in the you-know-what to deal with, and there’s not much you can do about it but hope to whatever you worship that it works out. I should also mention that sometimes blocks will often spazam or glitch, like a block will be… somewhere..? or a tower of blocks just thinks “F— life.” and breaks the game by spazzing.

The White Laboratory strikes a unique point between RTS strategy game and Tower Defense game. Both sides of the game seemlessly merge into one, allowing players to essentially design and construct their own towers for defense, or vehicles for offense. Neither are reduntant, both towers and vehicles will be neccasary to play the game.

The actual strategy of the game is both interesting and simple. Fast gun = more bullets less accuracy, slow gun = less bullets more accuracy. From this simple rule, players can utilise spin blocks to make various towers to defend their base, or even make hybrid towers which can be both accurate and slow, or innacurate and fast when needed.

Yeah it’s released finally and I like this game! To build up my tower with all this different parts is fun and to see how it works against gravity and natural forces is also great. The defend could be challenging sometimes but after a while there is always a way :)

Of course I am not yet through every level but so far I would clearly recommend it.

Bomb Defense

Bomb Defense

This is a really difficult but fun puzzle - tower defense game.

If you just want to play through the game w/o worrying about the achievements you need to adjust the difficulty. Did I mention it is really difficult? This is probably why this game has a lot of bad reviews. It might get a bit repetetive since there is a lot of trial and error involved. If you are a casual player, then lower the difficulty and you’ll enJoy this game. Otherwise, prepare to fail and fail again until you finally save the wor… I mean… the little kitten :) This game has a new take on tower defense genre which I haven’t seen anywhere before. Get it if you like to challenge yourself.

It’s not difficult it is bad

To anyone saying that this game is difficult I can’t agree. The thing about puzzle games is they are meant to be difficult since half the enjoyment is struggling and overcoming them to come up with the right solutions. To do this the game has to be accesible and playable so the difficult part wouldn’t be to use the controls but finding the right solutions. It’s ok if a game isn’t perfect when it comes to controls and such but if it hurts the game in such a way that you can’t build your solutions because of these bad controls is it not difficult but bad. The solutions would be easier if the game weren’t setup in such a bad way and with the terrible ui so you could focus on the puzzles and such instead of controls. Also to actually look for the solutions can be useless since some of the solutions isn’t about being very clever but more about using the exclusion method for a very long time.

Earth Guard: Egypt

Earth Guard: Egypt

‘Earth Guard: Egypt’ is a very basic archery style game that sees you armed with a bow and arrow trying to stop waves of enemies who are trying to break into your village. There is only one way in, so that makes things easier, but the enemies (of which there are a handful of different ones) run (and I mean a super-fast sprint) towards that door. The only way you will last more than a few seconds in this game is to spam the bow and arrows, literally just pulling the trigger over and over without pulling back. OK, so there is only one level in this game, but it is free after all and if the enemies can be slowed down quite a lot this could be a fun little download. There is no scoreboard sadly and no end tally, so you have to guess what score you got, but these are small issues that could easily be fixed.

Earth Guard: Egypt is a free to play VR game that did not work. It ran on my HTC Vive system, looked bad, sounded ok, played Nope. Had No VR controls. Had only grabbing of a ball in a pot that you can throw and it exploded. The start and Quit menu button was off in the distance, ball hits didn’t work them either.

Do not bother to download this, unless you are going to review this turkey.

Creeper World 4

Creeper World 4

For anyone who knows what Creeper World is, you’ll probably know what to expect and what you’re going to get. This review is for those who don’t know what Creeper World is, and are looking to break into the series starting here.

The totally official backstory

  • Having just watched the Titanic movie, a brave scientist seeks revenge against the ocean for killing Jac-

  • The giant amoeba from Evolution has evolved and is now threatening to eat the galaxy unless David Duchovny can-

Real player with 538.4 hrs in game

This game is a small evolution over Creeper World 3. Around 45 missions total plus random and user-made maps. If you enjoyed the previous games in the series you will enjoy this one.

The graphics are now 3D but that doesn’t affect the gameplay that much. The only exception is the connection between buildings, which now also takes height into account. You can no longer link from height 1 to height 20 with a simple tower.

An annoying change is that nullification is no longer permanent. You have to keep the nullifier intact and supplied, otherwise the nullfied structure will come back into operation. This is like CW1 where you had no nullifier and instead you had to park a few cannons near each emitter to kill off the creeper before it can spread. CW4’s system is the worst of all the games. Maybe this change was brought about because the circle of power mechanic from CW3 was so OP. But there is a simple solution to that - simply make the nullified structure disappear and leave nothing behind. The ERN system is a good compromise as it retains some of the benefits of the circles of power without becoming OP.

Ash of Legends

Ash of Legends

I’ve played some of the beta builds and I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played. They have done a lot of work since they’ve released their first(?) demo and the game is polishing up nicely. They have improved upon pretty much every aspect.

The devs seem to be very accepting of criticism and seem to be working hard to release an excellent VR game.

If a tower-defense fps hybrid with grappling hooks sounds like your type of game, then this game might be for you. Keep in mind that they are still working on the game, however.

It is a super fun game with a lot of potential.

The developer is responsive to feedback and does a great job communicating progress.

I wish this game all the best.

Fort Meow

Fort Meow

The goal of the game is simple: You have to build an catproof pillow fort to be able to read a book in the attic.

The thing is there is more than meet the eyes at first and the story behind the situation is certainly one of the cutest I read. I won’t spoil it because it’s part of what makes this game so nice and there is nothing better than letting yourself being surprised by the reason why there are so many lap obsessed cat in the house.

I’m playing that game in the background when I’m doing something else (aka discussing with people, doing a quest on a MMO or roleplaying) and it’s exactly the sort of game you can enjoy by focusing fully on it or doing something else at the same time. You have as much time as you want to prepare your defense against the catlaps, so taking break to do something else is 100% possible.

Fort Meow is a somewhat short physics based pillowfort simulator. In this game you follow Nia as she unravels the secrets of her grandparents sudden disappearance and why there are so many cats around…And why they’re so clingy!

You begin the game building a basic fortress from chairs and brooms, and eventually you have an entire house worth of furniture in there, all ready to ward off the cats who keep trying to interupt your quest to figure out what Nia’s grandpa wrote in his journal the days shortly before this all.

Garden Of Mooj

Garden Of Mooj

Garden of Mooj is a monster farmer simulator where you raise cute little slime monsters called Mooj. You find different types of food and feed them to your Mooj and it will train their stats in different ways. Every night even scarier monsters come to try and destroy your Mooj statue and you must defend yourself using the Mooj you have raised. Once you train your Mooj, their abilities can unlock gates to allow you passage into new areas, as you make your way across the world trying to save it from a mysterious enemy. Mooj is fairly similar to games like Slime Rancher and the Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure, and was a lot of fun. The game also has a really decent jazz/easy listening soundtrack.

I find this game strangely addicting and loads of fun despite how simple it is.

Its a good game for just not worrying and getting a good chuckle and you can make your mooj fairly different.

Pros:

Relaxing

Silly and cute

Addicting

Cons:

it can be a bit buggy

its not entirely clear on what to do

could still use more to do(personal bias)

Mind Spheres

Mind Spheres

Mind Spheres is a heavily simplified Rube Goldberg machine puzzle game where players rotate a small number of pre-installed platforms to direct a sphere to its goal. At heart this is a very straightforward game and it is quite fun, but its few artistic flaws make the game much less enjoyable. It becomes a game where there is no market for it.

With very polished and content-filled Rube Goldberg machine games out there available on Steam like Contraption Maker and the Crazy Machines series, this game just does not have any place for it. The game is not difficult and the physics is quite consistent. If it were more fast paced, there definitely would be a reason to play this game as players could casually breeze through a few levels time to time. However, the game has unnecessary animations when starting or restarting the level. In a physics-based game where players are expected to repeat a few times after their simulation fails, this type of drawn out animations kills the pacing. There is no zoom in/out and the screen only moves side ways in the setup mode, forcing players sometimes to run the simulation only to discover they need to utilize path that is out of their view at top. The camera also moves so slow and every time the player wants to edit their level setup, later the camera starts from the middle of the map instead of where the ball is, and it pans so slowly when player is deprecatingly trying to move the screen elsewhere by keeping the cursor at the edge of the screen. In the end due to these flaws, what could have been a casual, quick and light version of simplistic Rube Goldberg machine, Mind Spheres became a puzzle game that caters no one.

Bullet points

  • For a puzzle game, it’s very easy

  • Physics behave the way you expect

  • Minor control twitchiness, but doesn’t hamper gameplay

  • Has a good “fun factor” despite its quirks

Full review

Mind Spheres bills itself as a physics puzzle game; while I won’t dispute that technically that’s true, if you’re looking for deep puzzling you may want to look elsewhere. To me, I’d say this is more of a “physics manipulation game” (as if video games didn’t already have enough unnecessary sub-genres). But yeah, if we’re not being pendantic then yes it’s a physics puzzle game.
