Confusing or rather complicated start: that’s whats in store for you when starting this one.

The game has a learning curve to it that will take some learning and getting some used to, the gameplay is pretty much in the form of a Tower Defense, but there are no lanes and restrictions, the insects move and attack from any angle, so that is the biggest learning curve to adjust to and plan from, the game can be quite brutal and unforgiving, but it gets easier as you learn to play the game, the better you understand the mechanics and make use of them the easier this one gets.

It is painfully obvious that there was not enough time devoted to play testing this game.

The controls are a mess. I don’t exaggerate when I say that they are some of the most unresponsive I have ever seen in a strategy game, and they are a never-ending frustration. Free flash games on the internet have higher quality standards than this. There are also many random objectives and events that are entirely dependent on luck, and punish the player through no fault of their own. Units and power ups are poorly balanced, and the game seems to be more of a test of how well you can micromanage your units in a mess of crisscrossing lines without losing your temper than a test of strategy.

Great game, highly recommend trying it out. It might seem a little easy at first for this type of game where often you are meant to die a bunch and slowly become stronger with upgrades. You have 1-10 ascension levels, but the first 4 are super easy and then 7+ becomes pretty tough. I’m not super excited about how it scales at 7+ because it feels like artificial difficulty, everything starts to cost twice as much so you can’t upgrade everything. I would prefer the enemies becoming more challenging rather than having less upgrades.

Neat roguelite strategy game. Beat it on the highest difficulty, enjoyed figuring it out. I had fun with it and recommend it, but I’ll list stuff that bothered me:

-Your core loadout before any towers/traps are your castle and three heroes (warrior/rogue/mage) by default. You unlock variants of these classes as you play. It quickly became apparent to me that the easiest way to win was “buff the ranged characters” and turtle in the corner with defensive buffs. It’d be nice if the upgrades supported different goals. I believe I had one playthrough where my warrior carried me, and it’s because he had full map range, so he was basically a third ranged character.

Tunnel of Doom

Tunnel of Doom

A fun game with a unique premise.

I enjoy the combination of tower defense, resource management, and dungeon crawling. The setting is unique, and the story is spartan but functional.

A few points that I feel could be improved upon:

  • Melee combat is very awkward. I assume this is intentional, to promote the use of defenses, but considering how frequently you’ll have to take a pickaxe to a goblin I wish it felt better to do so. I killed a couple of friendly miners by accident simply because of how difficult it is to engage. The pistol is also quite inaccurate; I again assume this is intentional, but considering how valuable bullets are, I wish they were stronger on the whole.

It isn’t bad, but very short. You can either beat it on normal, or play the hard(doomed story) which makes it almost impossible without seeing waves coming, no map and halving your health and other detriments, so it becomes about luck more than any planning.

The normal will take about 2 hours to beat and become quite easy once you get a few cannons. By the 3rd floor of normal I could afk on waves due to having 4 cannons set up, just had to attack for the mobs that were immune to being seen by the cannons.

Hunters Of The Dead

Hunters Of The Dead

This game is hard to get a good idea from looking at it on the store page. It is really good though, I got it on sale and have been very pleased. It’s kind of like plants vs zombies as far as gameplay, but has much less variation in units you control. They do however add new and unique elements to it to make it not simply a boring clone of pvz which is what a lot of these games turn out to be.

The game does require a whole lot of luck in order to beat it. You are not going to beat this early on, not until you have played and died tons of times. Not until you have played and built up enough gold in order to add global upgrades for all new games. It’s good and bad in that sense, it makes it not too easy or short, but also a bit frustrating that it is almost impossible early on. I saw one review that said you don’t run into monsters that often, but I seem to get attacked 1 out of every 2 or 3 moves that I make. Part of winning is just pure luck that you click on a spot and simply don’t get attacked during the round your players are resting. If you run into an attack your first 3/4 or 5 clicks it’s going to be tough b/c your guys will be resting and you can’t do anything which just lets your village get destroyed. You could also start off and not get attacked for 6 turns in a row with time to build up a nice army. This randomness gives me so many mixed feelings on this game. I have had several games that I run into dracula on my 2nd or 3rd enemy encounter and then it’s either game over or nearly game over.

The first thing to clarify: it is a rather limited, very mediocre indie game. So, there’s absolutely no rush to buy it. However, if you do get it via some bundle, a big sale, or another occasion… It might be not too bad, for one evening.

Technically, Hunters Of The Dead is a mixture of rogue-like turn-based exploring of the city, infested with the undead plague, and a tower-defense-like real-time action, somewhat similar to Plants vs. Zombies. You have 5 lines with squares to place your troops, your base on the left, enemies move from the right end of the screen, attack your troops, if there are any in their way, or simply rush themselves to the base, to decrease some of its defenses.

One Shell Straight to Hell

One Shell Straight to Hell

(Review was updated on Dec 2021) I’ve spent many hours alpha-testing this game and decided to buy it on release day. Here are my thoughts so far, a list of positive and negative elements:

The good stuff:

  • Uniquely witty main character.

  • Good variety of unlockable skills and lootable guns, be it primaries or secondaries.

  • The setting: a terribly haunted mansion property set in the 1910’s - 1920’s.

  • The Padre’s voice actor probably smoked 10 cigars and drank too much whiskey. Fantastic.

One Shell Straight to Hell

There’s a brand-new Roguelike indie title on the streets; One Shell Straight to Hell. One Shell Straight to Hell lets the player experience the best of two worlds with its well-put-together Roguelike dungeon-crawling gameplay with a touch of base defense elements mixed in.

At first glance, the game seems to be simple enough with its Procedural Generation World. But as you cross the first stage after finishing a base defense wave, the game becomes something much more.

## Dungeon of the ENDLESS™

"Roguelike."

The word alone calls to mind so many gaming archetypes and settings as to be an almost irrelevant descriptor, and yet we all know the basis of the procedurally generated game with randomized elements.

"Tower Defense."

Again, a genre so permeated with varying degrees of micro-management and strategy archetypes that the picture in each person's mind could almost be a different game.

DotE is an amazing offering in that it takes both of these genres and combines them in a way that makes a single player experience on a short campaign almost a multiplayer game… and turns a multiplayer game into a uniquely individual experience even for a group of four players working together. Or _not_ working together - because this game can be both of those things, as well as several degrees of in-between.

### Seamless genre-blend

In Dungeon of the Endless, a game best described as a tower defense, dungeon crawler roguelike with RPG elements, every bit of the genre-blend is as highlighted as the next, while still finding room to deliver exposition and lore, adding an additional layer of mystery to the experience, without ever feeling overbearing.

As the story goes, Success, a prison barge, is shot down while on route to the planet of Auriga, the epicenter of many events in Amplitude Studios’ Endless universe. A number of crew members manage to escape in drop pods, but upon crash landing find themselves trapped within an underground complex from which they must escape.

Lucky me has the dubious honour of writing the first review for BattleGrounds: War, Tanks and Nukes.

BattleGrounds: War, Tanks and Nukes is a paid version of the free game, Battlegrounds: First Blast. It's a minimalist 2D top down tower/soldier defense game where you must send your tanks against enemy tanks and defend your base with the single tower and various abilities you get.

As the screenshots show, the graphics here were phoned in. On a bad telephone line while driving through a tunnel. While the phone was turned off. It's that bad. The level design is terrible, too, it's barely possible to pass the first level. Next to no thought went into level design.
