ZAMB! Endless Extermination

ZAMB! Endless Extermination

I have not played the 2014 release of this game, so I will review this version by itself. ZAMB! is a twin-stick shooter where you have to defend power nodes by building turrets, placing different types of traps, and using other offensive abilities. We played the co-op for a few hours and the game managed to give as a challenge by exposing our lack of teamwork ;). ZAMB has 2 playable characters, one of them places the turrets, and the other dude is more like a crowd-control spammer. However, both characters can pick up and carry turrets around which is really cool. There are a few different areas with multiple stages, each ending with a boss fight. The game even has an endless mode, control binding and lots of upgrades - more than I can say for some similar games. I would recommend playing it with someone, but it has the same content for single player as well (15 stages, 3 boss fights, and several endless maps)

Fun mix between a tower defense and a shooter. You can be either melee or range

Finish it in solo and coop. It also has an infinite mode

Difficulty pretty well balanced, with good powers and towers to unlock.

And even if it could be quite messy sometimes to see what’s going on with all the fx displayed, it’s definitely worth the price for a decent couple of hours

An excellent VR game. It’s pretty immersive, very strategical and skill rewarding, smooth locomotion doesn’t get you dizzy and playing it with a friend in Multiplayer (PC/VR) makes for a lot of time of fun without you both having to own a VR headset.

This is a truly awesome game! If you like Tower Defense games at all, you have to get this one. Not only can you play with the help of someone else on your computer, you can play alone in VR.

I really like how the VR player can actually go from tabletop Tower Defense, and get immersed in the action by transforming into the map, and help your towers fight the invaders.

My only complaint thus far is even in normal difficulty, it is still very difficult to progress to the different stages. I hope the developer gives the old guys like me an Easy version soon. Awesome graphics as well at a great price of less than $20.

I’ve spent so many hours on this game and I still keep on coming back to it, I figured I owed it a review. So here goes.

PixelJunk™ Monsters Ultimate is a tower defense game. Um. That’s it. You play a Tikiman defending his offspring from wave after wave of nature monsters by transforming the surrounding trees into weaponized barrels. I couldn’t say that there’s anything particularly special about it as a tower defense game, if only because I don’t play enough tower defense to make sweeping statements about the genre. I guess that’s the thing. To me, this game IS the tower defense genre: it’s an intuitively designed, visually and musically appealing, simple, challenging game. Easy to understand but hard to master. I haven’t beaten all the levels, 70 hours in at the time of this review, but I definitely want to.

I, like many others, have waited 10 years for this game to be released. I see it getting many harsh reviews, and with hundreds of hours played on the first one I feel I can make an accurate review on the game for those considering purchasing.

PROS

  • Overall, it’s the same style of gameplay as the first game (tower defense) and holds up well.

  • The graphics are cute and very fitting for this style game.

  • I LOVE that bosses now spawn enemies. In the first game, I felt that the bosses were too easy, but now not only can bosses spawn enemies, but bosses can now have shields/resistances too (and some fly on and off intermittently). It adds a new challenge.

The original PJ Monsters was a massively innovative approach to the tower defense genre. It honestly felt like Shigeru Miyamoto had finally designed a TD game, taking over the genre by pouring fun all over it. I played that game for at least a thousand hours on three different platforms (bought a PS3 just for that). It’s possibly my #1 game of all time, making the sequel my most anticipated sequel of all time, by far.

You can imagine my disappointment when I noticed the 3D graphics, the uneven terrain, the non-1:1 tree-to-tower ratio, the forced zoom-in, not to mention the countless minor problems that should have been the only concerns if the game was any good. Easily the most disappointing sequel ever and that’s saying a lot ‘cause I lived through the Nintendo 64 killing all my favorite 2D franchises. I guess I just wanted more simple levels with the same engine with new towers and tweaks. Maybe even a level generator and editor and other workshop support. It would’ve been a fast and cheap sequel with a guaranteed place in our hearts. This is the exact opposite.

This is an underrated gem that’s well-worth the $1.99 I paid for it. I’ve had this game for over a year. The later levels are challenging enough that it takes some thought and multiple tries to beat them. I still have yet to complete the last 3 levels in the extended campaign. If you’re a tower defense fan like me, you should buy this game.

A nice game. Not too easy and with well thought out units and levels. For just 2 bucks this gives a lot of playtime and is a nice tower defense game.

This is a challenging and fun little game! I love the diversity between characters, and the different playstyles. The spells are pretty intuative, and it definitely plays well with a controller. There are also some very different challenges between the maps that make each unique. Co-op is pretty simple to jump right into, and highly encouraged! It’s definitely possible to go solo in this game, but it’s more fun to play with help. Haven’t really mentioned yet, but there’s also a nice simplicity of style in this game. It’s a combination you don’t see a lot in games: challenging, fun, simple. This makes it a good pickup for all ages, and definitely playable for most.

X-Morph: Defense

X-Morph: Defense

Tower defense genre was never known for having a lot of variety. And man, we have a lot of such games. In a way, tower defense is like hidden objects genre. Which means that most of such games feel almost exactly the same and it’s really hard to remember certain names. It’s like “Tower defense games? I’ve played those before…”. So, how to make your game to stand out? Well, there are only two ways. The first one is to add a unique feature. And the second one is to make it especially spectacular. EXOR Studios chose the second way.

X-Morph: Defense or XMD is a combination of a ‘Tower Defense’ and a ‘Manic Top Down Shooter’.

At first I had my doubts this was a good idea, but in game it makes perfect sense.

The issue with the standard tower defense is you place your towers, start the wave and sit back, maybe add or alter a tower or two during, then go back to waiting for the wave to end and repeat.

This is not the case for XMD, unless you’re playing on Easy with all unlocks.

You have the usual between wave time to do what you need, place, move, sell & change turrets, but once the wave starts you can personally get involved, helping out how you see fit, as well as all of the above.

Had a great experience playing this game at EGX 2019 and I have been keeping an eye out for this game ever since. The game is fantastic! This is my first tower defence game ever and it is a great intro to the genre. I have a great time playing this game and time goes by quickly as it can be very addictive. Killer soundtrack too, really fits in well with the game could turn you into a BEAST!

It’s not awful but not great either. Mines also count as towers… which is dumb since you have a tower limit number next to a mine limit number. The difficulty is wack as fuck. Love TD and have played and beaten all TD games that arent garbage but in this game shit happens and nothing fucking nothing you can do about it… Support shield tower is total shit as you can’t put towers even close to each other. Game feels incomplete. I want to recommend but not yet. Purchase only when on sale

Alright, I’ve plowed through about 10 hours now and I think I have the gist of it.

The good:

The grind is relaxed yet satisfying. Even if you only play 10 rounds and lose, you always get someting out of it; 0.1% damage here and 0.2% range there. I think those small rewards are pretty clever, and it doesn’t seem to be too lengthy either. I’m guessing another 5-10 hours and I’m done with the 100% achievements. Graphics and atmosphere is charming. Levels and tower-balance are so-so, nothing remarkable, On my poor budget I’d say this game is probably worth a $3-$5, (but then again I’m a hard core tower defense fan, and I’ve seen my fair share of really shitty tower defense.)

Mediocre tower defence. It would be neutral rating if possible.

  • Targeting options for towers is useful.

  • Speed control button press half hour level in 10 minutes.

  • sometimes you need to think about how exactly upgrade your towers.

  • 2 types of bonuses:

  1. on the map after killing bosses you may choose bonus for some type of towers

  2. after each attemp you may choose some tiny stackable bonuses like +0,2% range. After few hours, summary +13% is kind of nice.

– Only 12 maps, with 4 modes on each.

Catty & Batty: The Spirit Guide

Catty & Batty: The Spirit Guide

Catty and Batty is a lighthearted game about the friendship of a cat and a bat solving over 50 different puzzles TOGETHER. It fits in a series of indie games I have come to appreciate for their romantic theme, cooperative game-play and casual difficulty which is perfect to introduce computer gaming to your girlfriend. Hand-drawn sprites and original music also provide a special charm.

A wonderful short adventure about Catty and Batty using all the carboard boxes in the world to help a bunch of spirits to get home.

Everything in this game is charming - from hand drawn characters sprites to piano music.

Puzzles are inventive, you getting a new stuff every level, but they’re not hardcore, you can literally complete the whole game in one evening.

A perfect gift to someone you like and an oppotrunity to spend a relaxing and fun night playing it in Co-op.
