Bardbarian

Bardbarian

I didn’t really know what to expect out of this game. Thankfully, it’s not so hard to pick up. It throws you right into the game without any notable intro/knowledge but don’t worry, figuring everything out is a matter of few minutes. It doesn’t take long and you will be addicted to Bardbarian.

### ======OVERVIEW======

Bardbarian takes the Tower Defense genre to a whole new level, where you can actually influence the outcome of a battle, whether you just move differently or have other units spawned. Every level usually somehow differs each time you play it. However, if you play a certain level few times, you can actually remember when and where a specific enemy spawns. That being said, it is not a big deal since you’d have to spend too many hours in this game to actually remember the pattern of spawning. Besides the regular adventure/story mode, there are two more game modes: survival and escape. Both of them bring a fresh air if you’re just burnt out of the main mode and I must say that surprisingly enough, I’ve enjoyed these. Plus you can unlock some of otherwise not approachable units and you can come up with some other interesting strategies. So far I’m using ordinary units more but might give those specials try if I ever struggle with some specific level. And yeah, you’ll find yourself struggling with a level more often than you’re willing to admit but don’t worry, it gets better with almost every upgrade. Far better when you find yourself some comfortable unit combinations. One more noticable thing: sound. The way this game works with soundtrack and sound effects is just beautiful.

Repetition in video games can be draining sometimes. There’s only so many times you can jump on things, slash them, shoot them, right? And if that’s the case for you the player, what must it be like for the characters actually doing the work? Bardbarian’s a game that explores that a bit.

You play as Brad, a barbarian mercenary working to defend a nameless town and its giant magic crystal, which does…probably something important, since every monster in the area wants it smashed, although they never get around to saying what. Trouble is, Brad is having a bit of a mid-life crisis: surely there must be more to life than constant killing? The answer to that he finds is embracing his artistic side in the form of music, and helping other people kill things!

Ingenious! Terrorhedron Takes the tower defense genre to new dimensions of play.

I am a tough critic when it comes to media! I never give a perfect ten because then where can you improve upon perfection?

That being said…this game gets a 9.9 in terms of the depth that it brings to the classic tower defense theme.

It also gets a 9.9 in the “That’s friggin' impressive!” category due to the fact that it was done (for the most part) by one dude.

The game has only 6 levels, but that’s O.K. because while you might breeze through all six on the easy difficulty, the next level will present a thorough challenge even for fans of the genre. Then there’s three levels of difficulty after that! I’ve got around 100 hours on this game I believe, and I’ve beaten 4 of the 6 levels on “hard”. Then there’s “insane”, ……then “Mathematically Impossible” And I don’t even want to think about what those are going to be like . For a time I was convinced that none of them were possible to beat on the hard difficulty.

This is a must have for every tower Defense Fan! It took me a while to get used to the 3d profile and building the tower bases but the learning curve is part of the fun and challenge to most Tower D games. That is the case here as well. A mouse is a must in my opinion. If you are used to a track pad you could probably manage though. You must grind a bit to unlock towers and upgrades for them, however, they do a wonderful job of scaling it so you are grinding as you are learning and unlocking new tracks and such so It does not become a bore. It has some kind of 3-d effect option but I have no idea how that works. Someone more tech savvy will have to comment upon that. The game looks great without it.

Age of Defense

Age of Defense

Update 10th June 2021:

At this point I won’t be changing my recommendation but there are huge caveats that may cause me to change it if they are not fixed within a reasonable time frame.

Age of Defense is in early access hell, Recent patches have broken more things than they

fix,

Some examples:

The last patch added a new level that can’t be completed due to a bug, you can reach the end but the level does not complete forcing you to give up & exit the level.

On several other levels there’s a bug that makes random towers disappear.

If you like Tower Defence games such as the Kingdom Rush series, then this would be the game for you as the cartoony graphics, gameplay and style are similar. The big difference though is that this developer has pushed out an early access game that still requires a lot of work and they do not seem to take constructive player feedback too well either. So, I do not recommend this early access game.

The real bull****:

When I saw this game advertised on Steam, the look and feel reminded me of Kingdom Rush. I was super pumped as Ironhide Studios (the makers of Kingdom Rush) make epic TD games, so naturally, I was excited about the possibility of new developers re-inventing the TD wheel with a similar feel. Boy was I wrong! The game takes you back, waaaaaay back to the caveman era…you know, before wheels and tasty cheeses and even Tim Tams and it seems that the developers thought it might be only fitting to remove all the text from the entire game as well, making you groan and scratch your head (like a cave person) as you try to figure out how to get through the game as everything is in Hieroglyphics… I mean, like everything! The menu, the partly upgrade-able tech tree and all the levels, all in weird picture forms (which only worsens the frustration when you keep dying on levels because you partially think it’s your fault that you selected the picture of the monkey when maybe you should have selected the pointing arrows instead. I would like to think that I am a bit of a TD wizard and started this game out on the hard, difficulty setting as I do enjoy a good challenge. Let me just say that after almost 3 hours of gameplay, repeating levels over and over again (because I was dying…a lot!!), trying to figure out many possible defence patterns and even reducing the settings down to the easiest mode, I was ready to act like a cave person in wanting to throw my monitor over the side of the balcony in frustration. The only patterns that I found was where other gamers were sharing their same frustration on the developers' discussion boards here on steam. So, I joined them. I shared my views with the developers on what worked, what didn’t work (which is most of the game), bugs, positive suggestions on how to improve the game experience and finally, that if they were to fix anything at all, that it would be just these two things;

ValeGuard

ValeGuard

ValeGuard places you as a commander charged with the protection of the Vale. You journey town to town and with the assistance of heroes and villagers, you build and strategize during the day to prepare for assaults that can come at any given night. Each village has a set amount of days in which to defend before the arrival of the big baddies on the final night. This all leads to the big show down with the Big Bad Head Honcho and his Dark Generals…don’t worry, the final boss isn’t named ‘Big Bad Head Honcho.’ If your heroes die or the Inn is destroyed, game over…and I think we can all agree that a village without access to booze simply deserves to go up in flames. So keep that sweet, precious Inn upright.

Early Access (5/14/18): I am really enjoying my time with this game. ValeGuard is an addicting mix of Tower Defense, Real-Time Strategy, and City Building. Each village (level) has a different setup, so you’ll want to figure out where you want to build, and where to defend. There are many types of heros with different abilities that will also level up after experiencing some combat. If those heros surive they will also be carried over to the next village (I was very happy to see that). The game has depth to it, and there are a few different systems in place that you must keep in mind to be really efficient, but it’s not super complex or the type of game that is going to take a long time to figure out either. Once you hit that sweet spot of increasing your population, so they can do different tasks, while building up an army and improving your heros it gets really satisfying to see your plans come to fruition. Also, some great music that really sets a mood that goes well with this type of game (if you like good and relaxing video game music I recommend getting the soundtrack). As of this review I am over 4 hours in, and it already feels polished and more complete than any Early Access game I’ve played. The game starts at a great price, so if it sounds like something you’d enjoy I’d say give it a shot.

Personal rating: 7/10

What to expect of Hero Defense - Haunted Island:

Hero Defense - Haunted Island is a tower defense with a different twist on it: you don’t use actual towers, you control them in the form of heroes, while far from being the first in the genre, it is the first time I’ve played a game where you can have control up to five different characters at the same time and are free to move them as you like.

SINGLE-PLAYER EXPERIENCE REVIEW

Real player with 55.5 hrs in game

Grind, Grind, Grind…

Let me start by saying that this is not a bad game. Just a ridiculously overpriced game. I mean $30 for a game that still has actual Placeholder text in some places….really devs? Really? Not to mention that the PVP and multiplayer is pretty much dead so put those out of your mind.

The game is a tower defense game, with the twist being your towers are heroes you can, and will have to, move around the map. Each her is effective against certain enemies and has certain effects and atrtibutes. These heropes can also be levelled up with thhe spoils of victory to make them more powerful. Better weapons, better power-ups, better skills/attributes. Of course the savy Tower defense player will realize where this falls apart.

To All the Bunnies I Must Destroy

I really wasn’t quite sure what to expect with Fluffy Horde. What I can say for certain, though, is that is surprised me several times. Firstly, I was surprised it wasn’t a campaign of tower defense missions that would drag out into a massive bunny vs human war. That was a bit of a disappointment. I was also surprised that it was something more along the lines of an app game such as Angry Birds or Cut the Rope. Lastly, I was surprised by the sheer variety and thought put into each level because some of those seriously stumped me for quite some time. In the end, though, there was one last surprise as I found myself wanting to beat the game. That, in and of itself, is an accomplishment because it means I not only found the levels challenging, but compelling . So, for me, it honestly got better the more I played and kept me on the edge of saying ” I can do this, really.” so many times that I found myself playing into the wee hours of the night.

Fluffy horde is an okay game. I thought it was going to be a strategy build-your-army-before-the-horde-gets-too-big type of game, but it’s essentially a puzzle game. I think the controls are okay for desktop, but you can tell the devs had mobile in mind.

I decided I would start randomly playing small games from my library to get all of the achievements, and this one is the first I chose. I’m writing this review (at 17 hours) having just finished every badge for every level, but a couple of those hours were probably AFK.

[Free-to-Play] At the time of writing, this is a Free-to-play tower defense game, similar to plant vs zombies style where you place your defenders in a horizontal row and enemy will approach your castle. If they bypass your defenses, they will steal a crown; After 16 crowns have been stolen, it is game over

You will need blood (the in-game currency) to summon more defenders or to buy more rows and once a monster has been defeated, it will drop a heart; the heart is the currency and you have to click it fast or it will disappear

This game straight up sucks.

I realized that this review wasn’t very helpful based on 2 people that said it wasn’t, so I thought that I would update it, since this review would straight up suck if that’s all I said, so here is more information that may help:

This game is for you if you like:

1. boring music

2. crappy graphics

3. not knowing what any upgrade does

4. upgrading your tower but find out it doesn’t actually do any additional damage

This game just feels a bit unpolished and not even worthy of being called a Computer Science project (if that’s what this is).

This game has discusting GUI, awful music, putrid graphics. The game is trash. It was made in 10 minutes in a free Unity knockoff and you should stay away from this garbage. I had more fun in the main menu then the game itself…

You have no idea how hard I laughed at this game.

You have to learn the controls by yourself because, as far as I played, no tutorial was there to help me.

I glitched in a mountain and couldn’t leave there, but I could beat level 1 glitched. It was really funny.

I think this game can be great, realizing my mistakes trought gameplay was fun.

The graphics bother me a little, but, nice tower defense game.
