Shadowgrounds

Shadowgrounds

Hi, everybody. I played this game ‘round 5 hours, killed first boss (2 lvls finished) and so what I got about it:

What’s good:

  • Free Camera. It’s really comfortable. If you turn it on, of course

  • Gameplay. So it’s good and not so good meanwhile. About bad sides of that I’ll tell later, but right now: it’s not complicated too much and it’s easy enough. You are not needed to pick “right weapon” to kill special enemy, Kill ‘em with any thing you like ;-)

  • Not too complicated plot. On first view, it’s a real bad, but if you’ll look at the game like Alien Shooter clone, so that’s enough =)

This is an old top down shooter game so there maybe glitches and bugs running this on modern machine.

First of all, the most annoying part of the game is 6 out of 10 run it will gives an error saying “Failed to find Steam”.. the devs know of this problem but said “It’s Steam’s problem not ours.” Yeah, this is the only game i played having this problem so yes, you’re expecting us to believe that. The problem here is the game is having trouble getting the path to our installed steam folder. Especially those who didn’t install steam on their main drive.

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop

Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop

Reactive Drop

The sequel of Alien Swarm, an top-down cooperative shooter released by Valve back in the days.

History

Alien Swarm originates from an unreal tournament mod back in the days and was acquired and re-released by Valve in 2010. This game combined elements from survival games like shadowgrounds and left for dead. For a free game, it had a good presentation, nice gameplay and good graphics. It only lacked two things: content and community.

The gameplay

Like Alien Swarm, Reactive Drop is a cooperative top down shooter. The player plays with other marines against hordes of aliens, in order to complete different objectives. In the game, there are 4 different classes to play, each one consisting of two characters with different statistics including some class restricted weapons.

Friendly Fire is anything but friendly, medics are flavour and death, death do be part of the game. Try to keep up with your team and defend when necessary, picking a firing line and keeping it will increase everyone’s chances of survival. That said, in general, the game is Chaos.

People can and do play solo, but these are usually awe inspiring ASBI players. For the rest of us, team play is integral and trust is key. Communication in game is vital and facilitated in-game with voice communication, a text chat feature and a radial menu for quick communication emotes. Although after a few rounds, you’ll learn to read other players marine placements and apply your own work around tactics of support. The community is active and full of modders aiming to enhance your bug hunt with custom challenges, HUD’s, skins, sounds and levels. Additionally, there are dedicated servers from all around the globe, providing a place for you to meet new and interesting marines, in your fight against the swarm.

Halo: Spartan Strike

Like its predecessor “Spartan Assualt”, the game is a from above “twin stick” shooter spin-off Halo game.

As mentioned in that review I recommend playing it with a Xbox-360/One Controller.

The story line is about palying as a Spartan/s, denying the enemies the conquest of Earth.

Now you will start to face the Prometheans, the enemies introduced in “Halo 4” and the graphics and overall game experience has improved with this installment.

There are still 30 missions, but the side-missions (still 3 per level) are now displayed with the start of each mission and if you replay the mission you can even track the progress towards each mission. This is a great improvement and the grind missions are fewer, but still some annoying ones. Overall I also felt that the difficulty was lower in this game eventhough I excpect theme to finish in about the same time. You can also make things easier by buying “perks-per mission”( do not remember what they are called) increasing damage or score awarded etc. This is really helpful for achieving some of the harder gold medals.

Xenocide

Xenocide

Simple and basic twin stick shooter, but a lot of fun. You have unlimited ammo, so you don’t have to worry about finding new ammo on the map, you just auto-reload and keep shooting.

I know there are a lot of games like this, but I haven’t played tons of them, so I can’t compare to a lot of other ones, but so far I like it more than Splatter and Nation Red. Those games are probably deeper, but also have a steeper learning curve. This one just lets you jump in and go.

My favorite enemy is the dudes with pencils stuck through them, and once they die, the pencil shoots out and can kill you if it hits you. Okay, maybe it’s just a spike, but it looks like a giant pencil to me.

Really fun top-down shooter. Interesting power-ups. Fairly responsive controls.

Weapon selection is a bit too small. 3 main and 2 secondary weapons + 3 types of explosives.

5 different maps which pose different challenges in their environments. Zombie/enemy variety is a bit lacking. The longer you survive, the more crowded and chaotic the arena becomes and you inevitably die.

Could have been a very good game, too bad it lacks content overall.

Xeno Crisis

Xeno Crisis

A great game, that is held back by very few (but very noticeable) flaws.

PROS:

  • Wonderful pixelated visuals created by an industries veteran.

  • Sega Genesis style soundtrack, that will blow you away.

  • Shooting monsters is super fun.

  • Hard as hell. Aspecially for slowpokes such as myself.

CONS:

  • Enemy projectiles are too tiny and sometimes get lost in all the clutter. Nothing too scary, but still…

  • Enemy behavior differs from the original genesis version a little bit too much. Sandworms on level 3 shoot you immediately after they unearth, while in the genesis version there is a slight delay that allows you to deal with them before they will be able to shoot. The same goes for the toxic bomb launching things. Not sure if its a bug or a feature.

Very pleased Kickstarter backer! Absolutely worth the wait.

Xeno Crisis is a top down, twin stick shooter, similar to Smash TV. If you’re a big fan of Smash TV and looking for that old school difficulty in games, Xeno Crisis has you covered.

The graphics and animations are stylish and fit the alien theme. The music is arguably some of the best tunes composed under SEGA Genesis hardware. And the gameplay, while challenging, is lots of fun and easy to jump into.

One complaint I have is that the melee attack range is too short for comfort. I found myself getting hit almost every time I tried to do melee attacks. Only really useful on the slower, non-projectile enemies.

Alien Breed 3: Descent

Alien Breed 3: Descent

Long story short - 10/10, best game ever, this is how they did it back in the days, must have, old school…and why do this studio having this gem, creating other games, instead of a next part?!)

Long story:

Got first part for free on some giveaway long ago, and bought others with 90% discount.

Each part consists of 5 missions, if u play it slow, while checking all the map, u can complete each for 10 hours or so, I think, tops.

Bugs? There do u find them here?! And how?! The only four non-critical bugs I had, was in first and last part.

Team17, the developer best known for the creation of “Worms” and other such classics are the ones responsible for bringing us the subject of my next review, a lesser-known title but a particularly lustrous gem nonetheless.

The Alien Breed Trilogy is a series of third-person shooters. Like their more popular distant cousins the FPS, they too automatically come with an ‘action’ tag by association because that’s what we all (myself included) have come to expect from the genre. Though categorized as such, the three I’m going to talk about today could more accurately be described as atmospheric, survival games wearing Sci-Fi party hats.
