It’s one of those games that make you wish that Steam had a more complex grading system rather than the binary one. Crashlands is a game that reminds many (including myself) of Don’t Starve. In my opinion it is to Don’t Starve, what American remakes are to European original films. It’s goofier and more flashy, but in the process loses the idea of what makes the original so genius.

Gameplay

Crashlands drops you into an alien world, where you need to craft and help the locals to retrieve the packages lost during the crash landing. You have to scavenge and hunt mobs for materials that allow you to craft better gear and challenge harder mobs. It’s actually fun for the first few hours, until you notice, this is it, that’s basically the whole game. Just grind to craft another workstation, another weapon, another armour. It might have been okay as one of the possible activities, but it gets really old when it’s the only activity available. And you have to do it a lot. There are 35 levels of equipment and they increment in twos. This means, the same gameplay loop has to be repeated around 17 times, that’s at least 10 times too many. It’s also possible to ‘domesticate’ pets, until you notice, that it’s basically another part of the crafting system as the domesticated pets create materials which you’ll need to create your weapons and armours with. It doesn’t really help that the design of most of the gear is rather uninspiring. You can have the same sword/axe/helmet/etc. every 2 levels. I mean, it looks different, but the only actual difference is that it deals a bit more damage than the same item of the lower tier and a bit less damage than the item of the next tier. Only the gadgets and devices are a small breath of fresh air, at least some of them offer interesting, new mechanics.

Cyber-Ante

Cyber-Ante

This game is very addicting and refreshing to play. I have never seen a puzzle game like this before and it has been done well here. On top of that, the hacker’s dialogue keeps things interesting and gives the entire game and puzzles a backstory. The puzzles are challenging and make you hate yourself after doing the same move after 10 times of trying it. Would love to see what else this developer releases.

Video World

Video World

Disclaimer: Indie work is short and sweet. Don’t expect a lot.

This companion to the EP Video World by Monster Mansion also scored Excellence in Emerging Games at this year’s AGDAs (that’s Australian Game Developer Awards, just in case you’re unfamiliar). It’s a well known fact that Halloween is Christmas for the gays, and this rhythm game harnesses that energy with upbeat synth-pop and some excellent pun work. The bright primary colours and crisp character design make night shift at the video store a delight. This also is a continuation of Film Victoria’s fine work in gaming. Thumbs up from me.

I really loved Video World! The text was witty and got plenty of laughs from me, the gameplay really fun and enjoyable, and the music is amazing! I felt like the human manifestation of catJAM bopping to the music while playing. It is a short game, but a lot of fun.

Baseball Adventure

Baseball Adventure

Baseball Adventure is another GameMaker Studio asset flip from serial copy+paste infringers, HotFoodGames. All these guys do is rip off game templates and projects from the Yoyogames store and try to scam people into paying for someone else’s work on Steam.

This time they’ve ripped off a basic template for a top down brawler. A baseball bounces around a small room and you must hit it with your baseball bat asset thing they ripped off so your score goes up by one. Even if this wasn’t just an asset flip, it would be garbage. Impossible to recommend.

Cleo - a pirate’s tale

Cleo - a pirate’s tale

„Cleo - a pirate’s tale“ is a Solo Developed Retro Pixel Art Pirate Adventure with a lot of nostalgic flair, humor and a linear story, inspired by the old Zelda games and the classic LucasArts adventure games.

THE STORY:

„What is the most important part of a story?“

Cleo is a 14 year old cynical girl, living a repetitive life with her father in a bar. She knows everything about the epic adventures of pirate legend Captain Cabeca, but in her everyday life, she is just surrounded by boring fishermen and unsuccessful pirates, hanging around at the counter.

But when Cleo finds a strange pirate-logbook and sees a ghost, who gives her a mysterious hint, her boring life is about to get turned upside down. She is thrown into a dangerous adventure and finds herself in a world of lies, deceit, greed and bad breath - the world of pirates - and most of them are looking for the same thing:

THE TREASURE OF ETERNAL MEMORY.

KRAKEN FODDER:

“Kraken Fodder” is a mini game inside the game.

It is a card and dice game, which is taken pretty seriously among fishermen and pirates. One round takes about 5 minutes and the game is about destroying your opponents card deck with canon balls. HAHAHAR!

Throughout the game, Cleo has to play this card game against a few NPCs.

The game was successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2020. The release is planned for late 2021 with full voice acting in English and German.

And what can I say - good old Sokoban, cat-themed, with good art style - how can it not be good?

Do I smell Pizza?

Do I smell Pizza?

Hilarious theme!!

The fat boy walking up and down with his food towers and vomiting on rats while dodging friendly fire brings a compelling twist to tower defense and adds a new layer of dynamism that can’t be found in the original genre.

Recommended!

Real player with 14.6 hrs in game

“Chubby doesn’t share food”, even more, when it’s pizza! This game has so nice animations that make the character super fun. The towers are healthy or vegan food that attacks the enemy (chubby’s family?). You must kill the rats while the towers defend the path to the pizza.

It’s not an easy game, the first level itself is a challenge.

Cheap and fun!

The game isn’t particularly “good”, but you can beat it in 6 minutes while laughing about it in Discord & it’s free so play it anyways.

Do you enjoy

Guns?

Explosions?

Action?

A soundtrack that almost never suits the atmosphere?

Hand to hand combat?

A thrilling story?

Violence?

Highly inaccurate hitboxes?

Gore?

BIOMONSTERS!?

Saving California?

Life or death decisions?

If you answered yes (and even no) to any of these questions, then this game is for you!

On a completely real note, I streamed this game from start to finish and had a blast almost the entire time. Is it a triple A title? Absolutely not. Is it a humorously entertaining hour or so? Absolutely.

Fish & Fight

Fish & Fight

Fish and Fight is a game of shooting and confrontation between 2 players.

With a humorous tone, he stages a fight between two Sunday fishermen against a backdrop of beers and rock and roll!

Drop the opposing player into the river to defend your fishing spot!

Players can move around, throw a beer bottle and throw their cork to catch things … like an opponent for example!

If a player gets caught in the head with a bottle, they will be stunned. The opposing player must then take advantage of this short moment to catch him with his hook and throw him into the water!

Fall 4 times in the river, and you will lose the duel!

The game can be played online using “STEAM remote” or Parsec.

The game is mean to be played on arcade and here is the keyboard mapping :
