9 Monkeys of Shaolin

9 Monkeys of Shaolin

A great, modern beat em up that dared to be different instead of relying purely on nostalgia and making a carbon copy of already existing games. This game is basically everything I wanted Streets of Rage 4 to be.

Positives:

  • Decent story. (Not that stories in a beat em up ever mattered)

  • Very fluid and satisfying gameplay. When you get the hang of the mechanics and skills, you can do some awesome combos, linking the different attacks and abilities together. The fact that you can attack in 360° instead of being forced to a 2D pane doing only left/right attacks is a welcome change. There is a bit of ‘automatic lock on’ for the moves to help with this, but you still feel in control of the character. Sending enemies flying and watching their rag-doll bodies fall/smash against the environment is never not satisfying.

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a beat em up about a chinese fisherman/monk fighting the japanese pirates with a staff.

The main appeal is the satisfying, fluid and responsive combat. It has good skill expression with three different attacks that later get upgraded each with two different stances, a 360 degrees parry skill that requires good timing and can reflect enemy projectiles back at them and a dodge. Once you upgrade the attacks, you can fly across the screen with a kick and feel like a real Shaolin monk jumping and weaving attacks between multiple enemies. The use of magical seals disrupts enemies in an area that in my opinion make the game too easy even on the hardest difficulty. The enemies have a visual indicator, a brief shining light and take some time to execute their attack which usually makes them easy to defeat one on one. The only unfair element is sometimes ranged enemies shoot you from outside the screen. You will fight them in small groups in a locked zone until you defeat them and new enemies that need to be approached in a different way are introduced progressively. Finishing off the last enemy in a locked zone comes with a satisfying blow and slow motion.

As someone who loves wave survival shooters such as Call of Duty Zombies and Killing Floor, this game falls inside of my interests, despite being rather small.

Although the Singleplayer experience becomes repetitive rather quickly, in co-op it’s a blast with a few of your buddies. The second wave of objectives being random creates for a bit of an unpredictable RNG that will keep you a bit more on edge, and allows for you to optimize, but not brainlessly follow the same pattern.

I do think it’s a shame there is only 1 level and 1 gun, as I feel like more playable levels and 1 extra weapon would have made the game a lot richer in experiences.

So there’s really not much of anything that this game can offer.

entire gameplay is u either running from point A to point B(enteract with poster, paint machine, go to the area of next task) or fighting with enemies, and PvE is just tedious, literally everything what u doing is shooting and dashing, cuz there’re a lot of enemies coming from every direction and dash cd is about 2 sec u just spam dash to not being hit be large horde which following u around everywhere 24/7 so u need to always move or u gonna be clamped and killed(yes dash flight gives u the ability to move through units but just cuz there’re too much enemies around u even if u dashed away from main horde u gonna be hitted be surronding ones). And i’m not kidding, this is literally the entire gameplay - few tasks, one type of enemies, 10min timer.

This game is beautiful. I was immersed every second of it and it gave me the feels.

Playing it with a best friend or someone you’re very close to hits on a whole different level.

It’s one of the best experiences I’ve had so far, it makes me crave more games like this.

If you have a close friend and you’re looking for something to co-play together, this will be a wonderful time for you.

ArcRunner

ArcRunner

ArcRunner is a beautiful Cyberpunk-styled action rogue-lite set in the far future on board a huge space station where the controlling AI has gone insane, and its up to you to traverse the Arc to find and destroy it.

You start each run as a newly-cloned human, and using credits earned in each level augment and replace your body using robotic and cybernetic enhancements until you’re more machine than human.

The game features frantic 3-rd person action, a randomised weapon and augment system with almost unlimited possible builds, huge bosses to fight and 2-player online co-op.

The concept and stylization for this is pretty cool. Some kinks, but still definitely worth a play. I won’t lie the $3 price tag is wealth. Get it on

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

I’ve spent hundreds of hours playing the Dead Rising series, and there are few games like it. Off the Record really has the most going for it. Dead Rising 2 fixed many issues that Dead Rising 1 had, and OtR polishes DR2 even further. It features all of DR2’s famous weapons, plus the photography mechanic from DR1. Many dismiss photography as unnecessary to DR’s gameplay, and I disagree. It’s a comedic and gory game, and being able to take photos of the mayhem you cause and be rewarded for that turns that into a game mechanic. I can’t count the times I wished I could have taken a photo of something unapologetically silly in vanilla DR2 and in DR3.

THIS GAME HAS MANY REPORTS OF POOR PERFORMANCE AND DUBIOUS CONTROLLER COMPATIBILITY

IF YOU USE MULTIPLE MONITORS YOU WILL NEED 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE FOR THIS GAME TO RUN REASONABLY

I’m running GTX 1080, i7 6700k, 16gb DDR4 ram and on my first run I was getting 5-10 FPS.

Was also unable to use controller. Many have reported similar issues with this game.

After doing research installed “Flawless Widescreen” which has specific plugin for DR2:OTR. This fixed all issues immediately, including controller support. I reccomend that you make sure this program is accessible if you use multiple monitors and otherwise be aware of potential performance issues. Now for the actual review
