Traditional Roguelike

NetHack: Legacy The greatest computer game ever made, now with the convenience of Steam! As others have pointed out, there are many ways to play Nethack for free and they’re all good. I paid less than £4 for this version and I think that’s a fair price for the dev to port it to Steam and add some slight effects. I bought my very first version, too. Technically I was probably paying for the floppy disk it came on, but this feels like a similar non-violation of the spirit of the nethack license to me....

Cogmind Cogmind is a roguelike game, where you constantly build and rebuild your character. Your capabilities are defined by the items you acquire. There is no experience (no grinding!), you gain ‘levels’ by climbing to the next floor. This system makes various builds equally viable: combat, speed, stealth, all sorts of hybrids and so on. Items are not just stats +X. You will balance energy output, heat generation and support with your combat capabilities, speed and information gathering capabilities....

Hero of Not Our Time I’m recommending this game based on what it could be and on its innovation rather than the gameplay. This game has a lot of interesting ideas that are badly implemented (and need fixing): Good idea: Lootboxes for Rogue-like gameplay. Bad Implementation: RNG is crappy for no reason. (Late-game, I stopped opening chests because it wasn’t worth it.) Fix: Improve RNG. Good Idea: Cybernetic Upgrades. Bad Implementation: No explanations of items, uses, etc....

HyperRogue Here’s finally my review of Hyperrogue, probably my favorite game on Steam! :) In a nutshell, Hyperrogue can be described as a minimalist tactical roguelike in the hyperbolic plane. So, what does that mean, specifically? First of all, it’s a minimalist roguelike, and there is no equipment, and no items except for Orbs (basically spells) which are often activated upon pick up. Jupiter Hell *** UPDATED 1.0 REVIEW *** Jupiter Hell is fuckin' awesome. This is the best turn-based, combat-focused game since XCOM 2. Sproggiwood This game will always hold a special place for me as the introduction of my kids to roguelikes. There’s no auto-explore here, it’s more “puzzle roguelike” than I’d really prefer, but it’s ideal for my 7, 10 and 13 year old to play and get far too much enjoyment out of. Add to that the developers are some of my favorites (I don’t know them personally, but they also make Caves of Qud, a roguelike that I enjoy quite a bit as well) and I can heartily recommend the game to most anyone dipping thier toe into roguelikes without knowing what all the fuss is about....

The Curse Of Yendor True roguelikes are hard to find, especially the ones that are commercialized and sold on Steam. The Curse of Yendor is one of these rare ones. Developed by IBOLOGY LLC (Bob Saunders), the same guy behind the cult classic Approaching Infinity , The Curse of Yendor offers a good experience for both newcomers and veterans of the roguelike genre, providing both the traditional YASD experience as well easier difficulty levels and the possibility to disable permadeath, if you wanna play it like a regular RPG....

Adventure Minesweeper Mixed recommendation. It’s casual minesweeper-style game, with several, fixable issues. Imagine Minesweeper, except instead of mouse, you walk on the map and turn tiles. Turning a mine will result in a health-loss. Also, there are stones (impreachable points) and food (healing). Find all non-mine spots and you find the exit. That’s Adventure Minesweeper as a concept and in a nutshell. Does it work? Idea is actually alright. It introduces some deviations from the regular Minesweeper tactics....

Vulture for NetHack IMO this is the king of the rouguelikes. There is no question in my mind. The amount of stuff you can do, the amount of careful planning it takes to get far, dying sometimes on your first step of the journey… this is roguelike perfection. This is just an adaptation of the classic NetHack, for the most part it is simply a graphical overhaul, or basically an isometric tileset....
