not bad. I wish there was a way to turn the music off or at least lower the music volume without also lowering the sound effects.

Spacer: Legacies

Spacer: Legacies

This is a fun turn-based, hex-grid ship combat game. The ships are somewhat similar between classes of the same type (they do all come from the same tech background, so I give it a pass) but the story missions themselves are fun, and there’s randomized missions you can take from stations to improve your standing with them, make extra money, and salvage some loot if you’re lucky. Your pilots all come from the story line, so there’s little sense in wandering off the beaten path for more than a few missions until you have all of them. They also come with their own ships, so you’re not scrambling to scrounge up the money for another ship b/c someone invited themselves in! They also level up and get better as they take more jobs, so there’s incentive to bring them along.

Fun game, very reminiscent of battletech.

Some suggestions after playing it for a while, though.

  • Add a “Retreat from side quest” option. If I answer a distress call with my two corvettes and a frigate, and I find a convoy defending against four frigates, half a dozen corvettes and a battleship sitting on the gate, I’m going to have to tell the convoy to turn around and go home. Sure, there are some missions worth dying over. Making sure three shiploads of toilet paper make it through pirate space isn’t one of them.

Former Future

Former Future

Former Future is a strategic 2D top-down shooter where you face an invading alien threat on the frontier world of Saturn and its neighboring moons. The enemy has taken control of many of humanity’s bio-dome cities by causing the city’s robots to turn against the residents. For the good of humanity, you must retake control of these cities. After you dock your spaceship, you will only have a small time window to attack objectives within the city before the enemy discovers your presence and mounts a counter attack. You must strategically choose which objectives to attack, and the types character upgrades and defenses to construct. To recapture the city, you must destroy them in their final assault.

Features

  • Intense and tactical 2D shooter combat

  • Strategize and plan your attack to recapture randomly generated cities

  • Unlock new equipment and abilities to customize your character

  • Innovative class and ability system allows for deep but intuitive character building

  • Stellar soundtrack

  • Take on challenging missions with a friend in local Co-Op

It has potential.

I’d like to see Keyboard control. Left and Right arrows to rotate clockwise/counter, Up arrow to move forward.

Another suggestion

Real player with 5.4 hrs in game

This game has a lot of potential with its charming 16-bit style and almost endless customization with ship type, weapons and much more that actually have impact on the gameplay and your success.

My only wishes as for now is keyboard support and a soundtrack

SPACE ROGUE REVIEW:

..with a message to the

DEVELOPERS

at the bottom.

UPDATE: A developer replied to little ol me noting that they had addressed these bugs and an update rolled out inline with those comments. The Dev has also asked us(the community) to report bugs to them in the format they mention below in the comments. A big thanks to them for addressing this issue for me, I hope it helps others out there too!

I want to start by saying this game is great fun, only sullied by many bugs everywhere. Looking around the a large proportion of these negative reviews, I’d suggest many feel the same about turning their reviews positive(including mine) if the bugs get sorted.

Two things I would like to point out before I get into the “meat and potatoes.” The first is, I hate writing reviews this early into playing a game (13 hours.) Second, I really want to give a positive review and hope with some further developer involvement this game will get there.

So I can not, in this game’s current form, give this game a positive review. The forums are riddled with bugs, some of which I have experienced first hand. The bugs ruin what could have been a quality FTL:Faster than Light clone.

UFO: Aftershock

UFO: Aftershock

This game… I love this game! The beginning is a bit tough, but the mid-game is really fun!

You start with 4 squad members with average skills. They miss a lot and need to be close to their target in order to hit most of the time. As you complete missions, your squad members gain experience which will gradually increase their performance. Experience is spent on stat points which increase an array of skills which will directly and quickly benefit each squad member. When enough stats are gained, classes become available. Most classes will net your squad member a few benefits, and can be trained up to lvl 3. Each squad member can have 3 classes maxed out at lvl 3.

This is, by no means, a bad entry in the UFO saga. but it’s one I cannot recommend.

It’s a pretty solid game, with plenty of emergent storylines that will make you love the game, like the old UFO games. The fact that’s in real time shouldn’t matter, because you can always pause the game to give your orders.

There’s also an implemented class system, to customize your squad, and, while the “base building” part is less than optimal, it’s still decent, even if it’s decentralized.

So, with that much praise, why not recommend it? Well, because it’s full of bugs. Game breaking bugs at that. And most of them won’t happen until you have invested 40+ hours in the game.

Ancient Frontier: Steel Shadows

Ancient Frontier: Steel Shadows

This is a fantastic little gem of a game. Very moody and thematically perfect for the tone it tries to set.

Its a turn based strategy game very similar in gameplay mechanics to games like X com, Fire Emblem, and other turn based fare, only instead of commanding characters, you command ships, ranging from quick but deadly little fighters, to huge battle cruiser/carriers that come with disposable “body guard ship” as well as a few other surprises that were quite pleasing. Its truly an addicting title, with great music, recently added passable voice acting (some of its really good, such as the pirate queen and her entourage, including one guy who does a minor role as a pirate who sounds like a pro, to others which sound a bit plain and uh….not-so- pro. Its a mixed bag, but thats ok because it really helps with the immersion anyways).

Having played the original Ancient Frontier, I really welcomed the new addition of Steel Shadows. Everything in the game is improved over the original and it is clear that the developers listened to the players and thrown in some of their own ideas for good measure.

New and good things:

  • new faction and ships, which previously were unavailable;

  • new feel (pirates);

  • new side mission types;

  • new graphic assets;

  • new story with a mix of characters old and new (nice for the veterans of the original, but the newcomers won’t feel

Eternal Starlight VR

Eternal Starlight VR

Yup. 20 hours. Still enjoying this.

Great place to hang out: Music, scenery, story (skippable, for when you’ve heard it), cool ship design, and options for ship upgrades are plentiful and cool looking in their own right. I love a place with a low-key theme, in which epic battles are played out – much better than chaos in every direction all the time.

I enjoy playing the “same” scenario (it has some random alterations) more than once because this game allows for multiple strategies. It’s fun to win one way. Then think of another approach to try and work out how to win that way, too. In formation, or not? Multiple ships, or one very well equipped ship? What are those little fighters really good for?

Real player with 21.7 hrs in game

This game is a good example of what I always wanted in VR. Omnipotent view of a 3D battlefield and the ability to RTS the crap out of your enemies. The controls feel good and the combat and ship mechanics all seem very nice. So I would recommend this game just for those factors. Overall, the story plays out balanced and difficulty ramps up appropriately. By the time you get into larger combats later in the campaign, with more ships at your disposal, the VR controls really get a chance to shine.

Sid Meier’s Starships

Sid Meier’s Starships

Sid Meier’s Starships (SMS) is NOT Civ-in-Space, as many people hoped, but rather, it’s as if “Heroes of Might and Magic” (HOMM) had a baby with “Strange Adventures in Infinite Space” and transplanted into Sid Meier’s CIV: Beyond Earth universe. It somewhat resembles the Civ Series in that it involves growing star systems, managing resources, and has multiple victory conditions including tech, diplomancy, population, and so on, but all the parameters are either preset or simplified into “levels” rather than micro-management choices that delighted Civ fans. And rather than building as many units as you want, you have to make do with a single fleet (which can be a swarm of smaller ships, or a few uber powerful ones) that you must continually upgrade as needed. As a result, it’s a bit of “neither fish nor fowl”. It’s not as complex as Civilization series (certainly not that this price point) yet it’s deeper than most games at this price level.

Real player with 14.2 hrs in game

Oh boy, when Starships came out, I was like a dang kid in a candy store in terms of excitement.  It was my two FAVORITE things - space combat and Civilization - coming together.  Or so I thought.  Like with Beyond Earth, I had a very negative first impression of Starships, but when I changed my tune on Beyond Earth after revisiting it a few years after release, I decided to give Starships another shot, too.

Sid Meier has said that he envisioned Starships to be a stand alone expansion on the concept of Beyond Earth.  We’ve left the Earth and colonized other worlds, but we’d have to have interstellar travel to do that, so why stop at controlling a new planet?  Why not expand that to other star systems?  Well, that would be great if that’s what the game ended up being.  It’s not.  You do conquer other star systems and expand your empire’s borders, yeah, but don’t expect this to be like Civilization.  Imagine if Civilization were confined to a 10x10 map, and you could only have one unit.

Star Wolves 3: Civil War

Star Wolves 3: Civil War

I miss this game, I think I’ll have to reinstall it and have another go.

What you see here is a rather niche game, an early RPG hybrid space RTS, it is immensely fun, and while it can involve a lot of saving it scratches an itch in space game fans. I’ve not found another game that really does what this game does, the starpoint Gemini games come close but not quite like this one.

Looks wise it can be similar to the Homeworld games in many respects, especially with the engine trails that allow you to track fighters easier. Imagine if instead of a massive fleet like you have in Homeworld you had a carrier, and your heroes commanded the fighters.

This is my Review of Star Wolves 3: Civil War.

SW3:CW is a non-direct Sequel to SW2 which… had its flaws.

You start the game off and get instantly Asked what kind of Skill-Tree you want to follow, note that this is a Permanent selection, each of the Tree’s is balanced out enough, but still there “Rocket Salvo” which when Skilled to max extent, will not only let your Pilots shoot rockets at an INSANE rate, but it also affects Big Guns/Small Guns and other types of Weaponry.

Which makes the game very Easy in fact, you can take down several Battleships in just a couple of Seconds with the right Weapons, not even including Modded Weapons. (Full Plasma + Endgame Rocket Salvo = Ez Win).
