Ash of Gods: Redemption

Ash of Gods: Redemption

Do you like story-driven turn-based tactical RPGs? Even those who have nothing to do with Japan and with fantasy in general?

Well, I was just searching for other turn-based games, and this one popped out as one of the recommended titles on Steam.

And I was not disappointed at all, as a long-time RPG player and turn-based lover.

The gameplay isn’t really innovative, but I wanted exactly the contrary - here you’ll face a classical turn-based system in which everyone will stay put until you choose which action to do (each turn is timed anyways).

Choices. Much like the choice you’re making on whether to buy this game or not, making difficult choices is one of the key aspects of this game. It will affect how the characters react, whether they’ll live or die, how the story develops, and ultimately how it will end. A lot of that takes time and setup, and in many ways this is the kind of game that takes patience to love. It has its share of faults, but if you can get past them I think there’s an excellent strategy game just waiting to be played.

Показалось нечестным, что противники используют способности постоянно, а у меня по одному заряду… в итоге стал играть быстрее и агрессивней и игра стала интересней.

Defense and Revenge is a turn-based strategy game, similar to Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. It has an XCOM-style village system, where you craft items, research technologies, hire soldiers, etc. The battles themselves aren’t as in-depth as XCOM, but they have more to them than your typical Fire Emblem game. One of the biggest flaws of the game is the lack of a compelling narrative. There is no alien invasion story line like XCOM, nor is there a Fire Emblem-esque plot featuring a variety of characters. You get a few sentences from random text boxes, but nothing approaching what I would call a story. Overall, it’s a decent game but fails to do anything new or unique.

Mordheim: City of the Damned

Mordheim: City of the Damned

Hi all,

I will present this review in different segments depending on if you are:

  1. a GW fanatic and preferably familiar with the Mordheim Tabletop game. (GWF)

  2. A general fantasy/tactics lover (GFTL)

  3. everyone else (EE)

First the TL:DR version:

  1. a GW fanatic and preferably familiar with the Mordheim Tabletop game. (GWF)

You have been waiting for this game since the first time you critted the Ogre mercenary. It’s here. Go buy it. Oh wait, its not a straight conversion like BB? Hmmm. Well then have a look below to see if this adaptation is for you. Yes there are some bugs and yes the AI is not great, but this is meant to be played vs friends anyway right?

I know the feelings about this game are very mixed but as far as I am concerned it is perfect. The difficulty is the kind of unfair that requires you to think about every move you make, even one attempt to cut a corner and you’re punished severely.

I’ve played a fair bit now and from the negative reviews I’ve read alot of people seem to dislike the hardcore nature of the game. I can appreciate why but I don’t think anyone was ever mislead about how difficult this game would be or the penalties your units face for going out of action in a mission. This is almost a roguelike RTS, the best thing about this game is that you use the environment as part of your strategy to out manouvre the far superior enemy, lock them down and beat them into nothing.

Disciples: Liberation

Disciples: Liberation

Never played Disciples (1). Was a big fan of Disciples 2. Disciples 3 was a disappointment. I was grateful for the release of Reincarnation which allowed me to finally play the 3rd issue of the game, but I didn’t finish it. I truly thought that the Disciples series was over.

So I was completely surprised in October of this year when I came across Disciples Liberation. The trailer looked interesting and there was a lengthy free demo being offered. I downloaded it, played it for some 30 hours, and was hooked. Later the full game was released and I just finished it after investing more than 120 hours.

73 hours to finish the game, well I’m not the speedrun type. I like to go away from my screen and make me another coffee. With 73 hours I finished the first run, if you want to do the true ending you’ll need to unlock and launch Liberation mode.

Pros :

  • Beautiful art, proof that you can design lots of armors for a woman, and none of them is a titanium bikini. Maps, dungeons, Yllian, gear… really satisfying.

  • The big story is kind of déjà vu. No spoiler : you decide who is the bad guy, you have 4 choices and in the end you crush all of them anyway to become the champion of the gods of god champions. And nobody cares ! Look : when you take the highway from Lisboa to Vladivostok, ALL THE WAY you are fully conscious that your destination will be Vladivostok, right ? So if the big direction is 300% predictable, the good part is the quality of the journey, the details :

Run with Direct3D turned on, stretch to fullscreen, and 800x600 res. Trust me btw, the 800x600 res looks INCREDIBLE b/c of the awesome textures in this game.

70 hours in at the time of this review, I just finished the 2nd campaign (there are 4, and this isn’t even the expansion set) on Average (normal) difficulty. This is a game that will challenge you, but also reward you. Whether you build massive armies or put all of your time and energy into one unit, you will be surprised how difficult it is to stop moving those little bastards around. Buy this game if you have the opportunity.

One of the all times favourites games : Diablo2, Age of Empires 1&2, Disciples 1&2. Special mention for Civilizations 3 Heroes of might and magic 3. There was nothing like them at that time, and there still isn’t.

For fans of the genre and disciples 2 in special, i recommend checking Atlantica Online (cashgrabber and if you are not in an active strong guild there is no way to have the top mercs and craft top equipment, but the game itself is so much like Disciples 2, only mmorpg)

Disciples 2 had lots of room for improvement, but is a fantastic game, simply amazing. Disciples 3 unfortunately turned away from the style of the game, moving units in battle ruined the tactical pre-battle arrangement of troops.

Loop Hero

Loop Hero

A wonderful, clever and new take on the roguelike genre w elements of other genres that would seem contrary, yet it works perfectly as a whole. There are plenty of secrets and combinations to discover, and I would suggest a new player stay far away from any spoiler guides as a big part of the fun is discovering these hidden elements on your own. Graphics are good for the style they’re trying to emulate and there’s a definite minimalist aesthetic to the game that adds much to the overall story and themes of the game itself. Honestly, after all the time I’ve spent, I really just want more of everything and hope there’s an expansion or, at least, DLC coming. I’d take a sequel too, as long as it maintains the core of the first one. This is, of course, best for people who actively already love the genres this straddles, have an open mind and love experimental games, or, at least, are not slaves to the graphical arms race of the triple A field.

7/10

Loop Hero is a very impressive and creative indie game. However, the advantages of this game cannot hide the disadvantages.

Roguelike, Management, Tactical. Of course, this game has such rich elements, you might feel very interested in the first few hours. Keep playing this game, you will find it becomes a little boring. You also need to spend a lot of time on this game or you might not pass this game easily, even from my points of view, this game maybe not worth you to spend those time.

Dungeon Deathball

Dungeon Deathball

Fun tactics game. It plays like into-the-breach-lite.

What this game does better than into the breach:

  • Every turn is more connected. Enemies can only move a small amount and won’t jump across the map and target something else unlike ITB.

  • Enemies can be manipulated easily; A big part of mastering the game involves manipulating enemies which is really fun

  • The orange monsters and goalies chases the ball

  • Cyan monsters that chases players.

  • You can stand in an enemies attack range to make them attack you the next turn

Real player with 102.7 hrs in game

Quick note: My actual playtime at the time of writing this is closer to 8-10 hours, as I’ve been playing it since the first public demo on itch, months before Early Access release.

Dungeon Deathball is a compact, turn-based strategy game, in part inspired by Into the Breach - it shows you exactly what enemies are going to do next turn and also allows you to turn them against each other by pushing them around. Unlike ItB, it’s a very easy game to pick up and play a quick round or two while on a short break.
