Annals of Rome

Annals of Rome

As with others here, I played this intensively when it originally came out. Back then the interface was nothing particularly unusual, and even today it isn’t difficult, just clumsy - it takes about 5 minutes to get used to it. There are certainly a few issues with it, primarily related to the display of information at appropriate times - it’s hard to play without making any separate notes (you pretty much have to keep track of the loyalty values of your available commanders, as that is only visible on the screen before you make decisions about who to assign where). But that isn’t anywhere near enough to outweigh the cleverness of the design and the fun value of trying to shepherd your Republic through dictatorship and the inevitable empire, trying to keep it alive through the ups and downs of barbarian migrations and rival nations waxing and waning. An amazing game considering the technical limitations it was created under.

Italian part down below.

ENGLISH

conflict desert storm is an amazing videogame from an unfortunatley dead software house called pivotal games.

conflict offer a 14 missions set during the guld wars where you’ll get to play as either the u.s delta force or the british sas troops.

we are talking about a videogame for 2002 so the movement aren’t amazing the aim system is a bit clunky and difficult to use when you first play the videogame.

i would raccomend it if it wansn’t for the big amount of problems this game has with steam, sometimes it doesn’t even start up and it crashes in the middle of a mission, so i feel like i should advice you NOT to by this game, at least not on steam.

Conflict: Desert Storm is a personal childhood favourite. I put many hours into the PlayStation 2 version of this title in the early 00’s, and was very pleased to see it available on Steam. The console and PC versions have some minor differences between them.

Pros:

  • Control up to 4 characters at once. Allows for surprisingly fun and creative tactical approaches to missions.

  • Each character represents a specialist class, affecting their weapons and gear.

  • Decent campaign length, promising multiple hours, if not days of playtime overall

Commandos 2: Men of Courage

As most of the people around the globe would say “the best tactical strategy game of all times”. This game is surely the best around. I’ve played Comandos: Men of Courage countless of times and everytime its like first time. Love the intro’s in beginning of each mission, the story telling takes you deeper in history…

This game by far is the first in list of my favorite games! Pyro studio surely did made a masterpiece, i only wish that more people have played this and i would like to try it online as i never had an opportunity to play against someone.

What other game can you command a squad of elite commandos, be in an 3D simulated isometric world, and explore the world, plus for it to actually be good? Well then, Commandos 2 is the answer you would be looking for.

This game is able to capture that epic feel of being an elite commando, not one, not two, but eight. In a variety of missions all around the world, taking on the Japanese Empire in Asia and the Nazi Forces in Europe. This wide variety of missions are all housed on massive maps, with plenty of ways to tactically go through. As well, each map has bonus content hidden in each one, which unlocks even more maps for the astute players. The level variety, and enemy variety are amazing, with tactics unlimited, as well the music is sublime, unique to each level, and keeps the tone and gravity of the high stakes game of warfightering.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon®

This game is still my favorite hardcore tactical shooter. Nothing has come close to beating it, not even ARMA. Yes, ARMA may have some extra gadgets and a few extra bits of immersion, but GR just has the soul it needs to keep it realistic yet fun and not overly realistic to where you might as well push a button to tie your boots. A recommendation right of the bat before I get to the review: The Heroes Unleashed mod really completes the package and definitely makes it close to real. If you do get this game, definitely download it.

TL;DR Go to last paragraph.

When I was about seven I was introduced to this game when my mom would play it while my dad was at work. I’d watch and sort of engross myself in the experience with her as she explained her meticulous point selection and how Jacob and Cohen were the best of the game due to their insane amount of grenade launcher ammo.

Originally I picked up this game for the nostalgia of playing through it and I’m in similar circumstances right now where there’s a large amount of time I have to myself at the moment. I know it won’t be forever, but I’ll explain some of the mechanics that I like about this game and what you need to do to enjoy it.

Rainbow Six in 2005:

-3 single-player campaigns totaling 30 missions, and they get better as you go. Athena Sword builds on Ravenshield, and Iron Wrath (make sure to download and install, super easy) is the pinnacle, the missions are brutal and the maps look stunning. This is definitely a pre-DLC era game.

-Game is set within the Tom Clancy universe and builds upon the formula from the previous Rainbow Six entries

Realistic and fun!

  • graphics still look good
  • HUD and scope stretch on anything not 4:3!

  • no aiming down iron sights (Project VI is unreleased, RavenShield 2.0 is not animated))

  • things can clip through walls (bodies, smoke…)

  • AI is good (spawns somewhat randomly, uses grenades, kills hostages, surrenders, moves around)
  • AI threats give themselves away by talking/shouting whenever they detect enemies

X-COM: Apocalypse

X-COM: Apocalypse

More than 20 years after it’s release, I can still quite confidently say, without hyperbole, that this is still one of the best games ever made. And I don’t even mean just one of my favourite games, but literally one of the best games in history. The hours I have on this are just the steam version, which is a tiny fraction of what I played back when I was on windows 98/2000 as a kid.

This game is systems upon systems upon systems. All of them working in the background, and in perfect harmony with each other. Everything you do in this game has far reaching consequences that are not necessarily simple or obvious. A decision to use serious explosives when defending a building owned by another company for example, may lead to you pissing that company off, which can change any further missions you do in their territory, can cause services to become unavailable to you, and may even result in inter-corporation wars in both the strategy and battle layers, spontaneously and unexpectedly starting up or beginning with clear hostile actions. While you can put money into deals to improve relations with some companies, others will not be your friends no matter what you do.

XCom Apocalypse is my favorite of all XCom titles, old and new. And - no, not because of nostalgia.

While I’m certainly cherish the challenge of the first two XCom games, and enjoying the tactical shootouts of the newer ones… By the terms of complexity of the gameplay, Apocalypse still has no rival. Well, maybe the first Banner Saga has something common in terms of complexity - but it’s another setting and totally another scale of events.

If you’re still wandering, what I’m talking about - it’s all of the game economics, your actions and their consequences. Yeah, the things I hate in the new XCom games for their inaptitude.

X-COM: UFO Defense

Super game! One of the true classics, and - according to me - one of the best games still in modern times!

Note: A patch openxcom.org fixes pretty much all of the bad usability issues in the original game. This is probably a must-have if you are going to enjoy the game today.

This game is super for people who likes strategy and management. Unlike the later series of X-Com (partly but mainly after Apocalypse (game #3)), the features of the game has been overly simplified to make the game suit a much wider audience. This game, however, is the real deal… superb for those who like a good challenge and the management involved.

There are games that are good. There are games that make you addicted. Then there is XCOM…

It’s the end of the 20th century. In response to growing alien threat, few governments decide to fund and XCOM organisation, solely dedicated to neutralising forementioned threat. Player becomes Commander of the force.

Game consists of two levels. On the Geoscape, you manage bases, research (come on, all this sweet loot left by deceased gray cabbage. I know you want it.), manufacture and more. Starting with single base (preferably western europe, you have radar coverage over whole Europe, part of Russia and Northen Afrcia), few soldiers and fighters equipped with conventional terrestial weapons. It is sufficient for the first few weeks, but after recovering UFOs and aliens, both dead and in custody, you will get better equipment: Laser weapons with unlimited ammo, powerful plasma-based armament, durable armors, UFO-looking fighters or even possibility to make your soldiers use their Psionical abilities against aliens. But to get this, you need to get some UFOs down. Send an Interceptor, and use his persuasive rockets to make aliens crash. Then, Tactical level starts.

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines

Background:

Purchased as part of a bundle from Bundle Stars. I played the first two games in the series to death back when they came out.

Impressions:

Commandos stands tall among action strategy games. It was a simple formula: a set of men are dropped into a mission, each with a certain set of skills and using them in concert you dismantle the enemies defences and confound their long term goals.

While the games does lean heavily on the two most useful characters (Tiny and the Spy) the situations force you to think creatively and apart from a few small instances you are completely free to tackle the mission as you see fit.

Hey everyone and this is my review about the game!

This is a Strategy Stealth world war 2 game.

Interface/Menu/Settings

There are some Resolution sizes.

The sound volume has a slidebar.

There is a manual/introduction in the game.

There is a tutorial in the game. (for Each commando and basic)

Multiplayer requires IP and Port Forwarding. THIS STILL WORKS!

About the game.

You play with a couple of commandos and each commando has their own equipment and skills. The game is very difficult by itself and their is even a difficulty level settings too. Just if it is too easy. There are 20 mission/Maps and You have to complete each mission by fulfilling the subjective. Destroying things, to freeing, capturing and so go on. Enemy soldiers/vehicles has an eye of sight which is marked with Dark green and light green. Dark green means you have to crouch or otherwise the enemy unit will see you. Light green he spotted you and could fire on you. Your commandos are able to take hostage by enemy Sergeants (usually patrolling with units). There is a chance that they will rise alarm if they see you, if that happends. You might load game. Because things will get 10x harder if they have raised their alarm. Whenever a mission starts you will be told what you have to do and you get some hints too.

Review after finished Jagged Alliance 1 and Jagged Alliance : Deadly Games

Jagged Alliance 1 Gold Edition

It gave me a reminder of old-time classic tactical game.

Even it takes high learning curve to master the control, the game play is easy to understand.

The player needs to think every turn, not like a modern tactical action game nowsaday.

Overall I had fun with JA1, This game is one of the classic in collection.

Score : 9 in 10 unbelievable fun , even it is quite old. Thumb up!

This little gem was on 75% discount recently. I had played JA2 extensively, so I decided to try this one too. I didn’t regret my decision.

Jagged Alliance 1: Gold Edition is an old strategy game with a turn-based combat system. Bear in mind that the graphics are rather dated. That said, the gameplay is very interesting and the replayability value high.

Your fighting squad is comprised of mercenaries, who sometimes interact with each other, have special abilities, different characters and cost various amounts of money. Not all of them can be hired immediately, a few wait until the 2nd day or later.
