1971 PROJECT HELIOS

1971 PROJECT HELIOS

I just have finished the game.

Is easy to see that the developers have given everything to make this game a very good one. The plot is incredibly good, the mechanics agroup all what you wish and even more in a strategy game, and the levels are really immersive (I love the cold effect in the screen).

I really recommend to play it, this game absolutely deserves the price that it has.

A title that could serve as a welcome to new players to the strategy 3D turn-based combat. Encounters are short and sweet, requiring a decent amount of strategic thinking, without reaching desperation or those odd “I’m lost” moments.

Story is quite engaging, and the characters that go along with it are charming and interesting. Recommended!

Black Legend

Black Legend

This game is a rare gem, even though there are others like it. It’s true that it has gone through some rough stages, but if you like turn based tactics, this is a challenging title. Especially on higher difficulty, but unlike in the other similar games, the Ironman rules are not about the save scumming. You will die if you turn up that dial. That is certain.

You will only have one save and one goal, to survive. Luckily they don’t throw you in the deep end straight from the beginning, but you won’t be able to feel the bottom under your feet either. The encounters will start to come in fast, but if you’re into speedrunning, there is a sprint and you can find a way around the encounters. So anything is possible, but towards the end of the game, you will have to do some clashes.

I think when judging this game, it is best to keep expectations in check. This is from an indie developer and not a AAA one so there is a limited amount of time and money that can be put in a project. This naturally means some areas of the game will suffer and I am a bit more lenient regarding it.

My thoughts:

My first impressions of this game were actually very good. This is because I love the 17th Century period in general and was drawn to the turn based approach of this game. I have also wanted to play some of the classes present here in a game. The atmosphere of this game has been good along with how you can freely run around the city. The animations and designs, although not perfect and could do with some work, are still pretty impressive. I paid full price for the game and do not regret it as I do not find it disappointing or sloppy.

Strategy & Tactics: Wargame Collection

Strategy & Tactics: Wargame Collection

To start off I wanna say this isn’t a game of high quality. In fact, I found one of the games in this collection as a mobile game for my phone first (the WW2 Sandbox one) and it was pretty fun, but had all the ads and in-app-purchases that you see with mobile games. I definitely suggest that as a mobile game because it was free and pretty in-depth compared to most strategy games on mobile. On computer, meh. It was incredibly cheap, and even cheaper on sale, which was the main reason I bothered getting it. The deal was pretty good, because this is a 3-pack of games. They all play basically the same, so once you learn one, you learn all of them. As far as strategy games go, it’s simple compared to other games like it, and the mechanics become second nature within half an hour to an hour. The tutorials are pretty trashy, and don’t cover anything more complicated than basic movement and attacking, which means it’s up to you to really explore how combat and movement work. The AI is actually pretty good, but can be predicted and outsmarted with some practice. So why am I recommending this? This may not be a great game, but it’s cheap and simple. If you’re new to strategy games, or just enjoy casually playing them and don’t like diving heavily into grand-strategy games, this is a good choice for you. There’s also a mobile version, which I suggest for anyone. If you really like the complicated and in-depth mechanics that you find in games like Hearts of Iron and Victoria 2, though, stay away from this game on PC. There’s quite a bit of content, but you’ll get bored pretty fast, and personally I would take Hearts of Iron IV any day over these 3 games.

Ok, here’s my take on the game. I’m used to playing Axis and Allies, both the Milton Bradley board games as well as the old Nova Games, which was the best…I also play the triplea version, which is excellent. This game is much more in line with the Milton Bradley games. A relatively simple game, simple mechanics. That being said, there are some very nice features that I enjoy. You can plot out moves in a step by step fashion. Moving infantry to take the first territory, then “relocating” mech units into the newly taken territory, and then launching an attack with them into the next. You are not required to to plan out every move for all your troops, they can be executed one at a time. This is definately a “beer and pretzels” kind of game.

An interesting spin on the TD-fps genre. The gameplay will keep you on your toes, and the artstyle, effects, and theming are consistent and quite good. It’s definitely an indie game, and there are a few rough spots here and there, e.g. the controls, tower placement, metal beam in the HUD, etc. That being said, the game was fun.

Side note, the current build is near-impossible. The groups of big bois are brutal and the titans are broken. But I imagine the devs will balance the game shortly

The Good Graphics are nice sound track is pretty sick and I like that they give you an active component with your builder. The bad Minions like killing your towers, you can’t be at two places at the same time and the default paths are a continent apart from each other, you have to actually physically pick up resources which despawn quickly so if your towers are killing things on the left while you’re on the right you’re getting half the resources at best, YOU HAVE TO BODY block to have any form of success, there’s not many tower choices and you can’t upgrades your towers, Minions LOVE killing your towers and some are thicc barely get frozen and are just blitzing so you have to lay sacrificial towers to appease their tower blood thirst, PLACING TOWERS IS HARD the area you can put them is very limited and you have to have a wide gap between your towers which is ANNOYING AS THE WORLD, you only have 30 very short seconds to lay towers while you try to fight with the build mode to even drop them AND THEN you have to run back to body block a path, there’s no wave counter that I noticed or any kind of stat to tell me how my towers are doing whatsoever, The Machine gun tower takes forever to start shooting like it will literally watch enemies run by then start shooting like 10-15 seconds later. Overall I think it’s a neat concept, but in my subjective opinion I can’t recommend it because I don’t think in it’s current state it’s worth the time investment to try and figure out how to win.

Silent Storm Gold Edition

Silent Storm Gold Edition

Since I wrote the original copy of this review more than 2 years ago, I played through the game again and decided to update and correct some things about this review. This review will focus on only Silent Storm since I don’t like Sentinels and never bothered finishing it. If you disagree with it, feel free to message me why you feel that way. Finally, there will be SPOILERS so read at your own risk.

Silent Storm is an old 2003 tactical turn-based shooter set in 1943 during the height of WW2. It is very reminiscent of the older XCOM games UFO Defense, Terror From The Deep, and Apocalypse. However, I’ve found this game to be much easier and less complex than all three of the original XCOM games.

Silent Storm is an old game with dated graphics and a limited character customisation pool. But its appeal was never on its looks, no. Detail and weapon variety, an interesting alternate universe plot, and a completely destructible environment all mixed together to make this a great game, if niche. My account below is purely for the Steam version, without any outside patches.

PROS:

  • Tonnes of weaponry (pistols, rifles, grenades, knives, etc.) to find (read as “collect”) and unleash on unsuspecting enemies. From interwar to late WWII, you will be spoilt for choice as your arsenal grows.

! Do take note of the IRL historical weapons and calibres used by the Axis and Allies. If you were partial to the Colt 1911 for example, choosing the Axis story may result in you having difficulty acquiring ammo for your preferred sidearm, as the .45 ACP was not a calibre made outside USA at that time.

Great Battles of Carolus XII

Great Battles of Carolus XII

PROS

  • simple graphics

  • easy to learn, hard to master

  • price

  • easy concept, for me better than Great Battles

CONS

  • no settings (music disable, resolution settings, nothing)

  • no save function - if you have no more time or game crash you have no chance to continue battle

  • no minimap

  • only a little content

  • no army builder

  • no “undo movement” button

  • no “next unit” button

  • infantry and grenadiers looks the same

BUG

  • after winning battle “Continue” button does not work

Conclusion 6/10. It is fun for 5 Euro, but missing some basic functions.

Its a pretty good 6/10 game that could be great but it can be extreamely frustrating to play. The concepts are behind it are strong and it does provide you with a sense of fighting the cold war, as you fund rebellions, rigs elections, strategically station your troops and try to come out on top of various nuclear confrontations. The art style and aesthetic are also gorgeous and i’d love to see more animalised takes on famous cold war imagery within the game itself.

That being said there are also alot of issues with the game that are also really frustating. The major issue that needs fixing is the lack of infomation giving to the player, especially in regards to how many turns you have left on a crisis or on how many troops an another nation has before you invade (maybe you should see the military strength of a nation when you deploy a spy.

I see that this review is one of the first to be read, so allow me to elaborate on some things that could be improved…:

1. Add and/or improve some perks. Example being some perks involve Warsaw/NATO regions that are utterly useless given that these regions have been nerfed to non-existence. Overall more unique perks to choose from would be nice.

2. (kinda 1-B.) Give an option to have Warsaw/NATO regions worth a lot more. If I recall correctly this is how it was originally designed, them removed in the update. I’d say compromise by giving a toggle option.

ESCAPE FROM VOYNA: Tactical FPS survival

this game sucks

do’s and don’ts if you still wanna buy:

  • do always run to the right edge of each map and just go forward, this way you avoid most enemies and reach the exit of the level.

  • don’t try to screenshot, the game will instantly crash

  • don’t try to walk in water, you will be locked in place and will have to restart the map

  • don’t complete any mission as you will have to restart the entire game to progress as the mouse disappears.

it took me 1.3hrs to complete this mess even with all the bugs involved
