Sophie’s Dice

Sophie’s Dice

SUPERB dice tool. The best I’ve ever used, and believe me, I’ve used a LOT. It might seem weird at first, especially if you’re coming from Tabletop Simulator, but believe me. Give it a chance and play around with the customization tools and you won’t be sorry.

Features like expressions (being able to automatically explode dice, exclude dice from a total based on context such as when rolling for D&D stats, and more are now essentials for me), automatic grouping and rotation of dice after the roll, and various ways to count dice have really made this my one and only dice roller.

I use Sophie’s Dice as a dice roller for my Tabletop Roleplaying game group. Absolutely love it. Plenty of options, beautiful design options. Most importantly, the dice roller is extremely fair.

Version 1.1

Love the new design options, particularly the Magic material type. They added a “realistic rolling” function that makes dice act more like their more physical counterparts. I’ll never use that feature (I’m all about that randomness), but I’m glad they give that option. They also make it clear when it’s being used, so you can’t be sneaky during game sessions.

Dudes on a Map: Virtual Grid Paper

Dudes on a Map: Virtual Grid Paper

I can’t say enough about how great this tool is for helping with running my game! It’s simple to pick up and start playing with, without having to study tutorial videos. Easily import your own maps in jpeg form, and you’re on your way to having a great time with friends. There are some ‘fancy’ features, like having 2 different types of fog (one standard and one for secret areas you don’t want to accidentally reveal), marking up areas of effect, initiative tracker, add in your own monster/NPC tokens, and a dice roller (with the option of using symbol dice for different game systems). While these are great, you don’t need to use them if you don’t want to. I tired of trying to learn how to use other systems, and my experience of using dudes has convinced me that I don’t need to while still having a great time with my friends.

Been playing since the earliest Alpha releases. Also, for respectful reasons of this review, I did not get it for free but I am close to the creator so, anyone reading this, perhaps you’ll feel that there’s bias BUT, I will happily preface it at the top here first.

Dudes On A Map, for me, can be described as the easiest non-tech proficient program for playing RPG’s online with your friends. While some may say “Scoff, there’s not nearly as many tools and all these bells and all those whistles.” I would reply to them “Good, I don’t want all that and, to be honest, I don’t want to take a small 101 course just to get my games running.”

Dynamic Dungeons Editor

Dynamic Dungeons Editor

For those who don’t know, this is a complete re-do of the old Dynamic Dungeon Editor which had a some what dated feel to it.

The new DDE is built with Unity and has a much better feel to it.

If you play table top role playing games on a TV, monitor, or projector setup with people physically in the room with you (not playing remotely) this is the best software currently out.

It has a small learning curve in my opinion, but honestly anyone can use the basic features: load a map (animated or static) and start playing Dungeons & Dragons or whatever RPG your heart desires.

Real player with 142.4 hrs in game

I originally purchased Dynamic Dungeons through Patreon and it has been a game changer for our DnD games. The ability to use a quick change map, pre-build the campaign, download or create custom props and then reveal it all slowly with fog of war is just amazing. Add to that the options for particle effects, motion background and immersive environmental sounds and you have a classy set up for your DnD gaming sessions.

I do all my creation on my robust PC and then copy the campaign over to the laptop for the session itself. We set up a 40" LCD TV on a pool table with Plexiglass on top to set out miniatures on. The players move their minis and I control NPCs, fog of war and other features from my laptop for them to view on the screen.

OK, so please read the full review instead of just taking note of my thumb down vote for this game. That was a tough choice to make. This program is a very mixed bag, some wonderful things in here that are blended together with some horrible design decisions.

Context: I use this program as a face-to-face tool for my gaming group, no outside connections. So this review will ignore any feature dealing with that. Also, will not be comparing this to any competitors. My setup is a dual screen PC, with two instances of the program open. One (GM) on my monitor and the second (Player) on a TV laying flat. Players are using miniatures and real dice, while I am using tokens and the program’s dice.

*** Update as of 3-July-2020****

I’m not going to remove the previous review because it’s all accurate still. That being said, FGU has more features and is better than classic, mostly.

However, even perhaps more importantly…. There is a piece of software called “Foundry” that is LOADS and HEAPS better than every other options out there. You pay 50 bucks for software as the host and it works just.. seamlessly. Check it out, it’s outstanding and incomprehensibly good. People connect via their browsers, but with NO exaggeration, it has 1/50th the load time of FGU or FG, and is so utterly beautiful. Check it out, you will be impressed.

I use this regularly to stream tabletop stuff on Twitch and it works GREAT. If you want something more immersive than the prevalent 2D platforms, YAG really has a lot to offer. Your players can go First Person, Third Person, or even top down if they want. Flexibility and the already multiple updates are just two of the perks offered by using YAG.

It does take some additional prep on the front end from your GM building out your maps, but once they are built you can save them. The good news is you can make massive changes with the very easy to use terrain tools. I personally think it’s a fair trade off for the level of immersion.

Dominant Mind

Dominant Mind

Dominant Mind is a Steam version of one of the most popular board games ever!! If you are a lover of logic games, this is the right game for you! People have always been interested in challenging the mind with mind games and exercise the brain with brain training games. Our brain is a muscle and just like every other muscle. It needs exercise to develop and keep fit!

Try in two playing modes to break the code:

  • easy mode with 4 pins

  • hard mode with 5 pins

The logic and Dominant Mind game rules are very similar to a mind game called Bulls and Cows that was played with a pencil on paper. Ready to get your brain training?

The Skinny:

Easily one of the best programs on my computer and just keeps improving itself. More detailed below.

The Thick of thing:

I began looking for an online resource to start playing Pathfinder remotely, as I only knew a handful of people who played and they lived all over the place. I started with Roll20 and stayed there for a year. During my tenor there I had to keep restarting things on every new game I made. I could not use the same assets without bringing them in again to the new map, and eventually started paying subscription to gain abilities to automate and utilize the feature that made life easier. Content creators were great (independent artists and such) but I began to realize the subscription model was going to make me pay more than any other game I owned. So I started looking at ‘competitors’ which I learned there were many.

Fantasy Grounds Unity (FGU) is a special case. It has a lot of downsides; however, FGU is the only product that provides flexibility, official support, automation, and most importantly regional currency support.

On the bright side; FGU runs on the local machine. The GM can use whatever maps and props he likes. It is also possible to make modules and share them. I can make an entire adventure including images and tokens and just send the file to a fellow GM or move characters between campaigns. I can run 50000 different campaigns and the best of it, once I purchased FGU, it is mine to keep. The official support is also great. You just buy the system once and it is yours. Most of the settings are updated with new features. If you are following a rather popular system, there are tons of adventures and if you are a DIY person you can make your adventures. The FGU also comes with 11 RPG systems and starter info for the most popular syste. Unofficial support is also plenty, there are a lot of unofficial RPG system files out there. You can also port or make your own system. With FGU, the sky is the limit.

Star Trek: Starfleet Command Gold Edition

Star Trek: Starfleet Command Gold Edition

Between my times living inKansa,sw Florida and here in Arizona…I’ve logged a lot of time playing this game…it goes a long way trying to capture the game mechanics of the original game which it is based upon, Star Fleet Battles, they come reasonbably close with a few difference only a truist SFB player would notice.this game can ca be easy as a walk in the park or a true boat ride to Sto’vo’kohr without any adjustment to the difficulty level. The game serves the pvp’er vry well and there is also a thorough single player campaign, although it really only is an unending string of soprties versus mostly Orion Pirates in ships of commensurate size.

Real player with 180.8 hrs in game

Alright, so I’m NOT one of the people who couldn’t get this to work. It started out fun, but is riddled with an absolutely infuriating number of bugs and stupid oversights. For example, several missions have triggers based off retreating enemy forces. When you capture an enemy ship and it subsequently disengages, those triggers will still pop when they leave the map. This can easily lead to failed missions, something which is insanely frustrating.

Some of the more egregious examples of bugs/oversights…
