Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess

Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess

Just like I remember! Fun to play, and has the option of using the 3D or 2D board. The game does in fact have a quick and easy Manual (under “Move”-“Online Manual”) that tells you how the settings work AND how to play. You just have to, from what I can tell, hold the right mouse button to access the menu options and place your mouse over the option you want to select (while still holding the right mouse button) and release and it selects it.

That aside, it seems like a fun and challenging game. I recommend it.

Simply amazing. Literally the best Chess game on Steam. Nostalgia goggles or not, I remember playing this game on my Dads old PC - an Amiga, no less - sitting up in the morning before school sneaking a few games in, sitting up at night before bed watching him play. It was a different time. A better time.

It might be old, but there are some things that never go out of style. The game offers a game of Chess in both “3D” pixelated/voxel graphics with medieval characters as playing pieces instead of figures, and a standard “2D” mode that is merely a simple top down view of a standard chess board with appropriate images for each piece. You can play hotseat/couch multiplayer, or you can pit two CPU (lovingly called I.B.M’s in this game) players against each other and watch the carnage. Back in the day, I remember sitting and waiting for minutes at a time until each CPU made a move once the was underway, but those problems are somewhat lessened now, it’s good. On higher difficulty levels the CPU does like to take its time though.

This is an interesting chess game. You can select two modes: Normal or 3D chessboard. It also includes many useful features, such as save and load. Your rival can be set to a human, a computer (IBM) or a network player (Modem). But I don’t know how to set the last one.

By the way, I once thought this game was based on a sword and magic world. Until I saw that enemy king used a laser pistol to kill my soldiers…

The Royal Game of Ur

The Royal Game of Ur

No wonder this game was popular for thousands of years. A great mix of luck and skill. A very simple game but encourages cunning and much “what would happen if” mindful forethought. Being intuitive, it is a great game to just let intuition take over whilst trying to remember the different odds of throwing 0,1,2,3,4. So a heady mix of sensation and calculation . The odds, by the way for 0,1,2,3,4 are respectively 1,4,6,4,1 out a 16 chance. I am discovering that there are different strategies for different parts of the board and different stages of the game. Additionally, there are “jokers in the pack” i.e. the squares that on which you cannot be taken but you also have the option of another turn. The game can twist around in seconds with the immanent loser suddenly winning the game. So it can be extremely exciting. So pleased the game has been rediscovered in modern days. Do have a go at this remarkable game honed to perfection over millennia. A game is just the right length to drink a cup of tea.

Nice implementation of an ancient boardgame, with two variants included. There’s a couple of issues, like when playing multiplayer if the blue player wins the screen says “AI Wins!”, but for 2 quid I ain’t complaining. It supports Remote Play Together as well which means I’ve been able to play with my friend through the quarantine. Also runs in Linux through steamplay, so that’s wonderful. Would recommend if you’re into ancient sumerian boardgames. Or just boardgames in general.

Very very fun. Counting the web version, I’ve put hundreds if not thousands of hours in to this game. Strategy is very important. Like backgammon, it’s still skill even with RNG. My review is mostly using the version from about a week ago. I’ll update it when I’ve spent some more time with the new version.

Pros:

Strategy is easy to learn but hard to master

Art is pretty cool

Very few bugs

It manages good variety without excessive complexity

I can’t say exactly what it is, but I really like the gameplay

A great casual hex based strategic beat em up rpg, like a classic D and D one shot campaign. Weigh the options of attacking vs. sneaking and grabbing swords, bows and shields vs. counting your potions and scrolls for the dragons. No story lines to remember, just dragons to beat up, and mummies, and trolls, and those pesky firebugs.

Run in the daily hunt against all other players, how many skeleton elbows can you collect in one run? 100? Inconceivable!

A lot of strategy in each room, should I sneak by the orcs and just grab the loot, hoping to not be spotted? Can I take out the casters and snipers before I get clobbered? Can I handle the rain of fireballs? (p.s. if you get stuck in a rain of fireballs, you are doing it wrong).

The Awakening of Mummies

The Awakening of Mummies

This is an absolutely fun and enjoyable family-friendly game for me! The graphics are well detailed, interesting, colorful and in many cases, whimsical. The content is interesting, and the difficulty levels are well-spaced between the beginner with a single mummy up to those that you really have to work for with three mummies, especially for the achievements which prevents the game from becoming “ho-hum” and uninteresting. I would recommend this game to my friends and look forward to more “pyramids to escape” from!

What a cute and humorous mummy, the game has a very smooth progression, so I started to understand how to escape the traps while I was enchanted with the details, but arriving in the middle of the second part I already realized that my logic classes will be very useful.

A feel good story, great script, and gameplay that felt like a breath of fresh air. In terms of gameplay, the things that I loved were:

  • Characters that had very distinctly unique traits and upgrades

  • Stage rankings

  • the stages themselves

  • revert feature

Each character had their own set of equipable upgrades that made a lot of sense and complemented their traits really well. One could also think of many ways the different characters with their personal upgrades could complement each other in different situations, and winning a stage easily because you found a good combination, was very satisfying.

What a pleasant little winter-wonderland. Pleasant in two ways: This game is really diverse and easy to play. I would highly recommend this game to kids or parents who’re looking for games for their children. I think it is more built towards kids because for me it was a little too easy.

The story starts out slow and progresses through various stages of growing up and friendships. A nice game for a cold winter-night and a cup of warm chocolate.
