Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess

Just like I remember! Fun to play, and has the option of using the 3D or 2D board. The game does in fact have a quick and easy Manual (under “Move”-“Online Manual”) that tells you how the settings work AND how to play. You just have to, from what I can tell, hold the right mouse button to access the menu options and place your mouse over the option you want to select (while still holding the right mouse button) and release and it selects it.

That aside, it seems like a fun and challenging game. I recommend it.

Simply amazing. Literally the best Chess game on Steam. Nostalgia goggles or not, I remember playing this game on my Dads old PC - an Amiga, no less - sitting up in the morning before school sneaking a few games in, sitting up at night before bed watching him play. It was a different time. A better time.

It might be old, but there are some things that never go out of style. The game offers a game of Chess in both “3D” pixelated/voxel graphics with medieval characters as playing pieces instead of figures, and a standard “2D” mode that is merely a simple top down view of a standard chess board with appropriate images for each piece. You can play hotseat/couch multiplayer, or you can pit two CPU (lovingly called I.B.M’s in this game) players against each other and watch the carnage. Back in the day, I remember sitting and waiting for minutes at a time until each CPU made a move once the was underway, but those problems are somewhat lessened now, it’s good. On higher difficulty levels the CPU does like to take its time though.

This is an interesting chess game. You can select two modes: Normal or 3D chessboard. It also includes many useful features, such as save and load. Your rival can be set to a human, a computer (IBM) or a network player (Modem). But I don’t know how to set the last one.

By the way, I once thought this game was based on a sword and magic world. Until I saw that enemy king used a laser pistol to kill my soldiers…

Fritz Chess 14

Fritz Chess 14

I am a lover of playing chess. I was never in any chess tournaments or clubs. I learned how to play when I was 5. I have been playing casually since, off and on. Since my upgrade from wind 7, (I miss dearly, win 8 & 10 sucks), to 8, then to 10, I lost the standard programs that came with Win 7. Chess program was one of them. It was simple and easy to play. I bought Fritz 14 due to the lack of any decent chess programs that I was coming/searching across/for. I purchased Fritz 14 and I am not happy with it. It is the most unfriendly interface that I have ever experienced. I can not figure out how to set up games against te computer. I barely able to get a game going against a human (Sending my moves via email to my bro in prison) via emal. I recieve his move via email and I move his piece. This is fine. He is the only one I play. There is so much junk, not explained, junk to me anyways, and it’s worse than maze of tangled fishing line. I guess if you love chess, and you are not Einstein, find a simpler chess program. Believe me, this program is not user friendly, I have many, many hours of frustration, and always ends with giving up. Try again a month or so later, still frustrating. The help feature is really bad. You can only enter predermined questions and so you have to settle for a listing that’s “Close enough” to what you are asking it. The answer is short vague, and not helpful. Not in my case so far. I have yet to figure how to start a game against the AI. Tons and tons of databases that does not make sence. I just want to play chess, I don’t give a crap of games already played, especially by some one else, even if it was Einstien’s game or not. Save your money, save your frustrations for something worth being frustrated over, and just settle for a simple, inexpensive chess program. I will have to search again for such. Win 7 version not compatible with win10. After all, check out the number of reviews on Fritz 14 (positive ones), sure, mostly positive, but they are all the Einstiens in the world, and they are only about 40 of them in existance. I am not one of them of course. ;op

ok so here’s the deal. having fritz on steam is pretty awesome. but there’s some things to consider:

if you already own fritz there’s not much (if any) difference between this and the last few versions.

there is however a larger database so i’m assuming that’s been updated from the previous version.

you’re not getting deep fritz here so no multi core engine (atleast not fritz engine) if you want

multicore engines they can be used without a problem. so the real question is, is it worth it?

well that depends. do you already own fritz and have an active premium account for playchess.com?

I have various Fritz editions, 15 was the last . No 16 is in my opinion much more enjoyable to play and I particularly like the two voices. One is your opponent who uses various accents during the game and the other voice that alerts you to “take your chance” or “congratulates you on a good move” when you play one.

Love the colours and the new yellow castle with its expressions sitting in the corner.

A good purchase in the sales. I am happy and have played ever day, temporarily abandoning my other chess programs for the last couple of weeks, a nice addition to my collection.

The main issue that I have with this program is that I can’t run it when steam is offline. I’ve also never tried using any of the stuff under “Play Chess” tab. Other than that, it’s way cheaper than the complete package and the GUI is very functional.

If you just want to use the Chessbase/Fritz GUI with the Fritz 16 engine, then you basically get what you’re paying for. I’ll give this PROGRAM (I wouldn’t consider it as a game) a 6.5/10 and say that I’m happy with my purchase.

Absolutely brilliant program. Does it all. Several training exercises (Rated, Friend Mode, Handicap Position, Theme Blitz, Opening Training, Endgame Training, Attack Training, Defence Training, Check Training, Mate Training) - you can put on many hints and tips and have the coach watching who warns against blunders.

On the Anlysis side, you have several analysis you can perform and you can use other chess engines - many of which you can download for free off the internet.

It has a massive database containing millions of games. You can also create your own personal one and open free PGN files from the Internet for tournaments or players which are easily downloadable from many sites.

I’ve used Stockfish before buying this, but I needed a complete pro software package with an existing pro opening book, a powerful database and functions to make custom opening books. After watching a video on how to use Fritz 15 to make a book, I decided to buy it and add the Stockfish engine to it. I made a pro book in 2 full days of heavy processing of 100,000s of games, thanks to the powerful Fritz database functions. Not bad considering I can learn from it for months or years to come. And I can develop my opening book further anytime. This is what serious players sometimes do, not for playing just friends but rather, also for competing on a much higher level. I can also make opening books on individual opening lines, like the Sicilian Dragon for example. Not just complete repertoires. You can change the weights of moves in the opening books as well, so if you find a drawish line, you might want the computer to avoid those lines, unless you’re preparing to play a draw-master.

The game has the right art direction and is very well balanced in terms of details and graphic design: it is sophisticated enough to be realistic and elegant, but without going beyond the point that would unravel the chess experience.

It’s a pleasant environment to play chess and a great way to get to know and play with its variations. Recommended.

Though at the time of writing I have had very little playtime, I absolutely love it.

The graphics sleek and the design stunning - this game does not disappoint.

I would wholly recommend this game to grand-masters and beginners (like me) alike.

This game truly is swell.

tldr; If you play Chess, get this.

To start, I don’t think anyone will play this for 34 hours unless you leave your PC on with this up like I did–but I still highly recommend it for new-to-okayish players looking for insight. I’ve ran through it a couple times & if it hasn’t improved my Chess game, it’s at least given me some new angles and strategies to think about. The aesthetic and presentation are perfect and make the techniques easier to digest, and it’s the price of a cup of coffee. All considered, it makes grabbing this the easiest decision you can make in Chess.

If you are a beginner (like me), you will probably like it. It teaches you some basic and easy chess tactics, and I’m sure you’ll have fun with the mostache guy. But something that perhaps some people will not like is that the mustache guy wom’t explain why your wrong movements are wrong, if you want to know what you shouldn’t do that, you will have to think about it for yourself.

Anyway, even if it’s a short game, it is really cheap and you will probably learn something useful from it, so I recommend it.

Chess 2: The Sequel

Chess 2: The Sequel

This is a truly great game! It has some bugs and is missing some features but the core is great and that is what really matters when it comes to games. Some more options and features would have been nice but it has all the essential pieces and you will certainly be able to enjoy the game for a long time.

It is simple enough that you can get into it fairly quickly but advanced enough so it will feel fresh for a long time and surprise you with new combos and strategies. A must try for fans of the turn based strategy genre or chess fans. If you want a strategy game without luck then this might be the game for you.

Chess 2 is a brilliant variant but this app is a hot mess. Here are my major gripes:

  • No move history. If you’re playing a correspondence game you’re better off logging the game yourself (e.g. “1. e4 e5, 2. Nc3 Nf6…” etc) as this game does not provide a move history. This is a baffling design decision since logging each move as it is played does not seem like an ordeal to code-in if you manage to build an otherwise functional chess variant app.

  • No audio controls. The game plays an embarrassingly brief sampling of classical music from the moment the app launches. There are no volume controls, nor is there a mute toggle. The only way to avoid hearing this is by disabling your sound, which is unfortunate as sometimes I’ll have a correspondence game open and I would like to listen for the wooden clacks to let me know a move has been played without being required to listen to the music as well.

You play checkers against the computer. I whupped his/her butt! This happens in the middle of a large, empty white room. I think it takes place in purgatory? I don’t know. It’s definitely not heaven. If you get to heaven, you get your own room, and it’s much nicer. All of it is immaculately white. Some gold trim, yes, but mostly white. A few chairs accompany a large, incredibly comfortable queen bed. You spend most of eternity sleeping. But every now and then you wake up and do some thinking and experience consciousness for a bit, just so your soul can reaffirm it’s own existence, you see. Before long, it’s back to bed for more endless restful dreaming.
