Dustoff Z

Dustoff Z

Nice little snack-size blast-em-up to enjoy between bigger gaming jaunts. I’m surprised this has so few reviews on steam as it’s perfectly functional and cheap game to pick up and gun through on a lazy weekend afternoon. Ignore the time played, I probably took about 4 hours to complete this fully.

The basic premise is you fly a helicopter about on a 2.5D plain after a zombie apocalypse has occurred, strafing zombies down below, all the while performing convoy escorts, base defense, cargo delivery, and survivor rescues. You upgrade the helicopter and onboard gunners with coins and parts/supplies that you collect/earn for completing missions. There is quite a variety of zombie types arrayed against you with plenty of damage they can bring to bear on you (and even the unarmed walkers have a serious jump you need to dodge or you’ll be pulled out of control into a horde). You have to manage your fuel, health and ammo meters throughout each mission which you top up from collectibles that spring from killing zombies or landing or recharge helipads, which also double as in-mission save spots.

Hi everyone I am the bkbossman, you can find me on youTube and publishing videos here on steam. First off I’d like to thank Alf and Marie from Zordix publishing for putting me in touch with this little gem.

I’ve played a few hours of Dustoff Z now and I’m enjoying it thoroughly, it has definitely taken the great aspects of the original Dustoff Heli rescue and enhanced them with a better tech tree, graphical enhancements and a fun and engaging story line.

The original was simple involving just 4 upgrades (2 choppers and 2 guns) and focusing on great game play, something which has transferred well into this latest iteration. The tech tree has been expanded so you now have not only more helicopters to choose from but you can upgrade them individually. You can also now choose to have gunners on your chopper and the type you bring with you can affect your progression in the game.

This game is a LOT of fun. I played this game for a little while on an XB1X and enjoyed it, but was distracted by some other title at the time and walked away. WB was running a publisher sale here on Steam, so I picked it up and got re-involved during squad downtime.

GAMEPLAY: Mad Max (MM) plays a lot like the Batman:Arkham series. Lots of driving with highly satisfying demolition derby-esque vehicle combat; and hand-to-hand ground combat where you chain together strikes, combos, weapons, and finishers that make you feel like a dusty Dark Knight. The world is HUGE but roaring across the map to the dulcet tones of an unmuffled V8 make it traversable in an oh-so-pleasing way. The game can get a little grindy as you accomplish all of the side missions and secondary objectives (oh look, another water point guarded by a coupla maniacs) but I cut my teeth on Elder Scrolls titles, so I ain’t skeered. The self-centering camera takes a little bit to get used to, and is slightly more cumbersome on foot rather than in a vehicle, but once you get accustomed to it, you can manipulate the camera in sweeping fashion during action phases with an ability that would make even George Miller shed a single tear of joy.

Steel Fury Kharkov 1942

Steel Fury Kharkov 1942

The game’s geriatric in its graphics and some of its UI, but it still looks and plays enjoyably enough. I try not to negatively judge something because it’s old. I’m in my mid-50’s and I don’t think myself less because my body is aging. Actually quite the opposite, I’m a much better person now than I ever was. Steel Fury Kharkov 1942 is like that. The youthful flesh has wrinkled and aged but underneath is some solid gameplay.

I own IL-2 Tank Crew (I love IL-2:GB) and Steel Fury should be the example of how to make it more enjoyable. Tanks with infantry support, historical missions, sounds of war all around. SF feels like you’re in an important battle to fight in the “Meat Grinder” in and around Kharkov.

*** Negative Review…..BUT ***

Firstly, as it stands now, bought on Steam by people wishing to jump in and run the sim immediately by clicking play as soon as the game is installed, for modern PC’s - the answer is no, avoid like the plague, unless you are using a PC of similar vintage. The game was developed for an earlier generation of machines and you’ll encounter all of the usual issues :- Screen resolution locked to minimum setting, graphics card not recognised, not enough virtual memory and so on.

Drake’s Odds: Survive

Drake’s Odds: Survive

Drake’s Odds: Survive is a multiplayer survival game in which the main character is an alien from the planet Exomon who must survive on the planet Earth, which is hostile and unknown to him, fighting, crafting and using the powers and technology in his possession.

The game is set on the lush island of San Tecla which consists of 64 km² of beautiful landscapes that you can explore with terrestrial vehicles (such as cars or quads) or extraterrestrials ones (such as spaceships).

In this overwhelming survival shooter game, you will be able to experience the sensation of putting yourself in the shoes of the invader, facing the earthly creatures or using them to your advantage by taking control of their body and mind to exploit their skills and knowledge.

And if you think that he belongs to a technologically advanced race and because of that it will be easy for you to excel over humans, then you are totally wrong. You are, after all, part of the minority on a completely unknown planet and with people thirsty to know your technological secrets and who will use every available weapon to steal them from you and put a spoke in the wheel. Therefore it won’t be easy, but you can always cooperate with other players or try to conquer our bizarre world by yourself.

  • KNOWLEDGE POINTS’ COLLECTION

The extraterrestrial finding himself trapped on an alien planet, in order to survive and find a way to come back home, will have to quickly learn to know the surrounding environment. Therefore he will use his powers to steal knowledge from humans that will allow him to learn new recipes for the construction of objects useful for his survival.

  • CRAFTING

Craft the means for your survival: weapons and platforms will be of precious use to face any situation against any enemy: craft a bulletproof vest or a respawn point near your operative base and begin the counterattack!

  • BUILD YOUR BASE

You know that in order to survive in an unknown and hostile planet, you must be able to count on a secure base to protect yourself, your food and your weapons and from which you can study in peace the strategies to reach the goal of prevailing over the enemy and find a way to return to your planet.

Also, during the game, it will be possible to make the base more resistant and technological thanks to a four-level system upgrade (wood, stone, metal, alien).

  • FIGHT

Fight against or ally with the other factions, but you should always watch your back! In “Drake’s Odds: Survive”, danger is around the corner, what appears to be a harmless bird could turn out to be the spy of the enemy clan studying your movements.

  • AI POSSESS

Take control of humans and animals to strategically exploit their different abilities depending on the NPC possessed. You will also be able to store and keep captured NPCs in cryogenic cages or capsules for you to strategically use them when you need them.

  • SONAR

Identify those around you by activating a limited-duration ray that will allow you to highlight neighboring NPCs, distinguishing those owned by other players from those managed by the AI.

  • ALIEN VEHICLES

Fly over the skies of the map with the spaceship with which you can hook and drag characters and vehicles with its beam of light and hit enemies with its powerful laser beam.

Now I totally dislike WOW simply because the accuracy of the weapons is totally random and you have no control over your secondary weps.

I come from Steel Ocean where accuracy isn’t rng but since they aren’t doing anything to get more players I moved on over a year ago.

I recently found this game and while it takes alot from WOWs, ie the rng accuracy element it’s actually quite fun once you realize there is a method to the gameplay and adjust.

It’s free and getting a match is fairly expedient unless you try and team up, since there isn’t alot of players. I wish you could team up against bots when you can’t find a match otherwise.

I like this game and enjoy playing it with pleasure for a couple of rounds. It’s going well for an Early Access game. There is only one thing that really frustrates me and that I think needs a thorough overhaul. It’s about the destroyers (DD). If they are equipped with the appropriate captain, they constantly spit their fog in the area, which makes fighting the DD almost impossible in a battleship. It is utterly ridiculous and far from reality that those pesky insects are buzzing around you and there is absolutely nothing you can do. In so many rounds I just ended up standing around in the smallest circle at the end and the DD fogged everything and I just waited for the storm to do the rest because I have more HP in the battleship. This is just plain ridiculous and boring and absolutely annoying. Otherwise I’m happy about every round and it’s fun to play the whole thing in Battle Royal mode.

UPDATED Review 4/10/2021: Wow! This is a ton of fun. I had some prior grievances with some of the choices made with gameplay that were making the game very hard to enjoy for me. I voiced my concerns in my review, and the devs (small, indie dev team) responded very quickly to address some of those concerns. The devs are very receptive to feedback and appreciate hearing from their community, and it seems like they care about their product after seeing the most recent updates.

The gameplay is a lot of fun! It’s a bit of a combo of Crazy Taxi, Quarantine, and Carmageddon with slight influences from other media as well. If you’ve played Quarantine, you’ll notice the inspiration, but trust me, the devs are working hard to make this their own game! You will find yourself driving around a crazy, chaotic, and relatively apocalyptic city with bad guys and pedestrians on the road, turrets, other cabs/vehicles, and more. You are picking up fares, some of which need to go somewhere, others want you to kill someone or blow up a vehicle, and others want you to blow up a building (similar to dropping someone off at a destination, except with more explosions!). There may be more fare types in later districts that I haven’t gotten to yet, but I am satisfied with the fare types that are already in the game.

Cool indie game! Some stuff heavily resembles Quarantine or Road Warrior, but there are some major differences. Even despite the fact that the game has some bugs, the devs update it all time - a lot of stuff was fixed in recent patches.

Pros and cons below.

PROS:

  • positive vibe;

  • unique atmosphere somewhat reminds the old Quarantine classic;

  • nice effects and gore system;

  • excellent music!

  • driving model is not that bad at all,

  • cool weapons!

CONS:

  • some missions look bland and could be a bit better;

There is a lot of thing that I would like to say, so I’ll try to keep it brief.

Here are some question from new players who I’ve heard a lot:

Is the Learning Curve steep?

Yes. It not just a learning curve, but a learning cliff, on fire and covered in bears. It would take quite some time to get used to the mechanics of the game.

The tutorials only teach the absolute basics (e.g. its (proprietary) build mode controls and AI programming). For new players, Only finish the first section of it and go experiments with the designer yourself. Expect some ragey moments at this stage as it will bombard you with an insane amount of content (even with over 1000+ hours, I’m still considered quite new by FtD’s community standards). Fortunately, the FtD community have very experienced people who are ready to help you if any problem arises (as long as you don’t say the game as a whole sucks), so I advise you join the Official FtD Discord server as most activities happen there.

Endgame: Road To Salvation

Endgame: Road To Salvation

Two player local coop split screen gaming at its finest. Very scary atmosphere, while you are playing you have this feeling of constant urgency. Its much different than other survival horror games out there. It’s always getting updates, and the developer is very responsive. Which is very much appreciated by people like me who have massive graveyards of unfinished games. There is a lot to do in this game once you figure out how to set it up and what to do. There are different options in the menu to customize the game how you like it, which is a huge bonus if you decide to play it two player. Next time you plan a scary movie night with your girlfriend, grab two controllers and this game instead. It will definitely beat an overpriced amazon rental any day! Highly recommended.

Crossout

Crossout

TLDR: google “crossout slam dunk” (even if you have no intention of ever playing the game, lol).

Full version (Scroll below for a section on “omg, grind!"):

After enjoying this game for quite a while, I feel like I at the very least owe them a Steam review, because in my mind the “Mixed” rating (as of writing this) is quite unfair, and is largely created by new players mistaking a learning curve for a “paywall”.

Which leads me to this main advice to starting players:

Real player with 2812.2 hrs in game

This game is EXTREMELY poorly managed. And trust me, this means alot, because most of the time i overvalue games and i respect the developers alot. I also recommend most of the games i play, to my friends. I would honestly not recommend crossout to anyone. This became one of the worst games i have ever played. Just because of some poor decisions

Let me talk about some key elements of the game.

GRINDING

Don’t be fooled by the fact that the game is free. The small playerbase is used to invest lots of money in the game, so as a new player, or a player who really plays for free, it’s a dead end. You will be smashed by the others, since the items are tier based and every tier is more expensive than the prior one. The last one takes few months, even years of grinding, depending on how often you play, of course, if you don’t pay real money. That being said, you might just find yourself in huge disadvantages if you play for free. There were decent ways to farm in game coins fast, but don’t worry, the developers made sure to patch them, so everything is a slow process and you don’t get anything significant without paying them.
