Frostpunk 2

Frostpunk 2

Frostpunk 2 is the sequel to the highly acclaimed, BAFTA-nominated society survival game that blended city building, strategy and management gameplay, creating a brand new genre. Its successor takes place 30 years after the apocalyptic blizzard storm, and Earth is still overwhelmed by the icy climate of neverending frost and harsh weather.

You play as the leader of a resource-hungry metropolis where the expansion and search for new sources of power is an unavoidable reality. After the age of coal, conquering Frostland for the oil extraction industry is expected to be the new salvation of what’s left of humanity. However, change does not come easily, and not everyone in this new multi-layered society will welcome this new direction.

Demands and expectations of various factions will raise tensions and evoke conflicts, but will a cold-blooded rule and a Machiavellian approach to politics be necessary? As the everlasting cold continues its grip on the city and outside threats arise, you’ll need to make sure your people are united, driven, and ready for difficult, unavoidable sacrifices!

Jakub Stokalski, Frostpunk 2 Co-Director, had this to say about the grand vision of the game:

“What we aim to deliver to players is an experience that goes vastly beyond that of the original Frostpunk. With a still-growing team of nearly 70 people, we have more manpower available to focus on all aspects of the game from the scale, the production value, and the quality of UX, but our ambition is to do more than a straight-up sequel. What players should expect is a wide universe of choices, the freedom to shape the society and the city however they see fit - and reap the consequences. Frostpunk 2 builds on the conflicts of its predecessor - survival vs human values, life vs the arctic frost. But most importantly, it adds a new layer that is present in many aspects of the game - be it politics, society or technological progress - the conflict between humans and their nature".

The Bonfire 2: Uncharted Shores

This game is a 5/10. Medicore gameplay and Poorly designed user interface.

The game basically plays like one of those mobile or browser games that disguises itself as a village building game with buildings being all on rails and fixed. It gives you freedom to place your buildings anywhere but like those mobile games that have “fixed slots” for X buildings only you will realize there isn’t much strategy here. Ever play those mobile games that start off forcing you to click here build this mission with this X quest completes and it gives you rewards. It hand holds you through the various buildings.

I played the first game, “The Bonfire: Forsaken Lands”, and I loved it, I was expecting this game to be a follow up of it, something to carry on the story, expand the world and add to the characters backgrounds. However, this game does not do that, it’s more or less the same but changed game mechanics, plus, you’re no longer present in the story. The game feels incomplete, even though it says it has updates yet to give, I bought a game and I expect the game to be complete, sorry for sounding harsh, I really wanted to look at this game like I did with the first, but I cannot see this to be as good as the first.

Monstrum 2

Monstrum 2

Monstrum 2 is a 4v1 multiplayer only horror game where you either play as one of (currently) 3 monsters and hunt down prisoners or one of a bunch of prisoners that has to survive on a randomly generated sea fortress. The goal of the prisoners is to activate fuseboxes which need puzzles completed to be activated. Some need items, some a code, some need keycards or are blocked by something that you need to destroy or push/pull. After that they need to repair their escape vehicle, either submarine or helicopter, and then reach them before getting caught by the monster.

TL;DR at bottom.

I cannot in good faith recommend Monstrum 2 at this time. As much as I want to give this game a positive review, there are simply too many glaring issues to warrant recommending the game in it’s current state. If you read some of the other reviews and feedback people have given, you can get a good idea of what it’s like to play right now and admittedly, while I do occasionally have some fun with the game, I find myself quickly losing interest and becoming frustrated.

If you get past the fact that you are going to have to ask others in the JunkFish discord to even find enough players to play a game, you are quickly going to realise that the balance between the prisoners trying to escape and the monsters hunting you down, pretty much doesn’t exist. If the monster even has a slight idea of what they are doing, in most runs, unless the prisoners are equally as good, if not better, you are going to get absolutely destroyed. Combine this with the fact that there are still so many bugs (especially with the audio) that have existed since the launch of Early Access, you are going to have to do everything your power to convince yourself that this is a good experience.

IMM Defense 2

Torn on this one, but in the end the negatives over shadowed the few positives.

It’s nice looking, and the music is fine, the controls are limited, but fine.

The tower options are pretty limited, and oddly confusing. There are (so far) eighteen options, but many have the exact same name and differ only in cost.

There are circles and octagons that act as pathing as well as gun placement, and each offers nine tower types. Progress is straight, one thru five, with no variation and no information regarding what you are getting for your money, which is quite irritating.

Played and enjoyed the first game.

A few more bells and whistles with this incarnation.

At the low price, you can’t go too far wrong.

There is a good game waiting to happen here but right now it is still a product that should be in Early Access.

There are TONS of bugs and features that simply don’t function well and the game balance is pretty much non-existent as it stands.

Bug example:

Your Shelter (which you have painstakingly expanded and built onto) is breached or invaded. You use the very rudimentary control scheme to position your survivors right in front of the door as they are cutting through, ready for COMBAT!!!! Then, nothing as the collision detection fails utterly and every invader literally clips through your survivors to go on and loot whatever they want.

Hooked on this game for a while. Plenty of bugs back then. But a lot of issues have been fixed, although there’s still few remains but worry not, they always working on the game! Beginning part of the game has always been fun to me, as you get used to it. its get easier later unless you are playing on harder diff cause breaches could be brutal if you aren’t careful enough. Overall, pretty chill game to spend few hours in!

Who is this game for?

If you like Britishness, the possibility of a decent story, nice environments or you like mildly spooky games AND you’re either willing to cheat or your time isn’t valuable.

Gameplay

My feelings towards this game are many and complicated. For background, Sunless Sea is one of my favourite games ever…and I can also totally understand why some people might absolutely hate it. Sunless Skies is in many ways an improvement over Sea, and yet, for me at least, it hasn’t quite recaptured the magic of Sea, and I’m not entirely sure I can explain why.

For people who haven’t played Sea, both it and Skies are games about exploring a world that is sometimes bizarre, sometimes charming, and sometimes terrifying. Both games have some of the best writing that I’ve seen in video games, with excellent worldbuilding. And both games are very slow-paced. A lot of time in these games is spent travelling from point A to point B, with only the occasional combat or random event to break up the travel. Depending on the person, this can either be a chill and relaxing experience, or an incredibly tedious one.

OLD REVIEW:

They deny you! They deny you! Not one of them. Not one of them!

So, I found that this game was free a long time ago (guess it’s only been about a year and a half) and decided to hunt achievements in it. Of course, there was a problem…it’s an early access game with very little explained on what to do or what’s going on.

Freakshow 2 is a possible sequel to…another game that does not appear to be on Steam. So if there’s some sort of knowledge between projects, I’m completely unaware of it. You move from room to room and monitor your asthma before you die while you solve light puzzles. Big problem with moving around, however, is that several rooms have the same background…so if you’re in the main hall, it will look exactly like your bedroom. Trust the map more than your own eyes to have a better understanding on where you are. Fortunately, if you’re an achievement hunter, a guide exists courtesy of the developer. Of course, after a year of being in Early Access and with the presence of a guide from the developer, it appears that development on this project has stopped. Whether it will become a finished product or will remain what it is appears to be unknown.

Shadowgrounds Survivor

Shadowgrounds Survivor

Shadowgrounds Survivor is the unmistakable sequel to previous years top down horde mode shooter Shadowgrounds. Unmistakable because if you didn’t see the title you’d be hard pressed to tell them apart.

That’s not to say Survivor doesn’t introduce a few new features, multiple playable characters and a more detailed level progression makes the game a good deal more engaging as you go along. The storyline is as was in the original utterly forgettable and can be easily ignored.

The greatest strength of Shadowgrounds Survivor is once again it’s use of atmospheric lightning which does a good job at turning otherwise bland encounters with the alien horde into something a little more suspenseful, lending somewhat from the horror genre.

Real player with 22.5 hrs in game

Like its immediate predecessor, Survivor is a top-down shooter that hearkens back to the days of Smash TV and Total Carnage, except that there is a much more detailed plot and a heavy nod to role-playing games. As opposed to the blanket machine-part upgrade system of Shadowgrounds, Survivor has implemented a more refined approach, with unique class abilities, general class abilities and weapon abilities tailored to each of the three characters.

Basic gameplay is still kill or be killed, run and gun, etc. Every kill nets you some experience, which is banked toward increased levels, and each level brings with it some upgrade points. Weapon upgrade parts are still found on the battlefield, dropped by enemies, but now you also get class-specific abilities and character tweaks. These are what increase with each level. Using the marine as an example, you’ll be able to buy quick weapon reloads, tough skin and fragmentation grenades. This is in addition to the basic set of character improvements that all three avatars have: radar display, increased health, critical hits, and an “auto-doctor” that will dose you with a health kit (if you have one stockpiled) if you fall below 50% health at any time.

Jurassic World Evolution 2

Jurassic World Evolution 2

I was going to wait till after christmas to see if this was going to get better, but with down right frustrating stuff going on here, nah this needs to be done now. This is abysmally annoying compared to the first.

I’ll start off with the pros:

Paleobotany is now a part of paddock building itself, very welcome very nice. Good step up.

Automation on the park vehicles is a lot better now… for the most part.

Slightly bigger maps, though it may not seem like it where 1’s were stretched out into long thin lines, these are all most compact and lumpy.

Real player with 188.1 hrs in game

Overall I recommend this game with an asterisk which I will go into a bit.

Mechanically, the game is an overall improvement on a base level from the previous game, at least as far as the core functions of the dinosaurs, park building, and pinning down what your guests need to get a five star park is. Makes it a lot more engaging then simply plopping down a hotel, arcade, clothes shop and restuarant near every viewing gallery. Guests wants are communicated slightly better and paths, shelters, etc. make even a bare bones five star challenge park look like a beautiful well done theme park in contrast to previous games where its a mess of buildings and hotels huddled in one place to artificially inflate a rating with a big multisectioned square of fences with nothing but diplos and dilophos in them.
