Organ Quarter

Organ Quarter

Organ Quarter is one of those beautifully rare moments for Silent Hill fans where someone not only understands the essentials and building blocks of surreal and mesmerizing horror, but perhaps not coincidentally also has the skills needed to take that understanding and make it into something original. Imagine if SCP-610 took over a small urban town overnight and you seem to be the only one out of the loop of societies new economy specializing in skin, that’s what the first hour of Organ Quarter is. You are a shut in who never leaves the house (for reasons that would be a lot easier to explain than mine to my psychiatrist) who is told by the voice of your doctor on the telephone that it’s time to leave your comfort zone and go smell the roses, only to quickly find out that said roses are made of processed ham and want to eat you. It pulls off the nightmarish breakdown of common logic incredibly well: there’s no intro cutscene or exposition needed, just you, a gun, and several subtle ques pointing you in the direction of what the hell happened to the town and why a lady in a mask very politely, in a perfectly normal tone asks you if she can have your skin when you are inevitably consumed by the very walls of your apartment building. But enough about the content of the game itself, you likely came here to know if the game will scratch the itch that most modernized gaming horror can’t, with its juvenile jumpscares, ample ammunition and/or lack of any artistic balls. And the answer is FUCK YES. The fact that sounds, not screeches or the clanking of metal but ordinary ambiance made me dart my head around faster than a woodpecker on crack is assurance enough for me that the games’s atmosphere is top notch. The early 90’s looking indie visuals actually add to the tone very well, giving me flashbacks to my first playthrough of Silent Hill 1 and Harvester. And anyone who knows me is aware that I don’t get scared by video games outside of the existential eeriness of the narrative, and Organ Quarter manages to have both that but also one the first times I was ever genuinely afraid to keep going, knowing that the game’s wonderfully dark imagination wasn’t above making something dreadful completely ordinary in it’s own little world. I felt an immense feeling of relief when the credits began to roll, along with an incredible feeling of satisfaction knowing the game I just played would become one of my all time favorites. Hell, there were times where I felt genuinely lost on if I was going in the right direction and the game was able steer me to the exit every time without any arrows or objective markers, that’s how good the level design alone is. As a designer, however, the lack of any kind of melee weapon confuses me. Running out of ammo will make you wish you had one more bullet to shoot yourself in the head with and go back to your last save since you are now completely defenseless. It only happened twice in my entire 5 hour playthrough but it was especially a kick in the balls for me since I went mostly melee in all the Silent Hill games and now being forced to just dodge enemies like how I dodge the special needs kid in the school hallway instead of facing them at a disadvantage wasn’t as fun. There was also a moment where I thought the game broke because an elevator door wouldn’t open on a specific floor, when in reality it just didn’t go to that floor and there was only a slight indication. The $25 price also makes me wish it had more replay value, like an infinite ammo mode or an option to make the monsters wear silly costumes, that sort of thing. That being said Organ Quarter is easily the best game to get for VR if you’re looking for a legitimate survival horror and not a haunted house simulator without the option of punching the poor man in the costume while pretending you’re Leon Kennedy or something.

It’s been 2 years, I decided to revisit this game. All the bugs I identified in the prior review have been fixed. It is now completely playable without any jank. If it still falls short in any area it’s the level design. The maps are geometrically less complex than many original Quake 1 levels. Very basic 3D solids smooshed together.

I think the most egregious example of this is the fusion of two wooden walkways at a 15 degree angle in the subterranean section where the power core/gate lifting puzzle is. No effort was made to joint them believably. They just kind of phase into each other at the tips. The caves and tunnels themselves also look very…“Quake engine”-ish. Big angular faceted surfaces with repeated textures rather than organic shapes.

⚡This game was a really good time spent.⚡

Love the way the production approached the retro theme,

it made me feel nostalgic and I could relive good times.

//the story is very good and I was interested in unraveling the game’s mysteries.

//The game makes us a character and I love that in a game, I like to feel a part of the game and being a character in it myself.

so… several positive points, huh!?

in addition, the game has a very deep

reflection on depression,

anxiety and self-condemnation.

So, this game is a very basic, simple OS simulator with a “game” that you can play within the PC. The PC does have some decent enough music in the playlist but not really all that much else to read or interact with (there are a couple files that you can read, but it only BARELY creates a story). The bulk of the gameplay will be located in the game that you can find in one of the folders. It’s got the basic “Slenderman” stuff going for it (go and collect 10 candles while a monster chases you). There is a stamina bar and timer to give it a bit more depth in the difficulty department (otherwise the game would be all too easy to beat). There isn’t really a story to the game, which there wasn’t meant to be (as a file shows that Oliver couldn’t think of a story before he died). I didn’t encounter any issues with the game, which is great. The story is pretty simple yet not very fleshed out as much as I’d like in games like this one. I could get the gist but didn’t really understand the why (for instance

! it’s clear that Oliver is being harassed/bullied but we are left with no clear reason for it).

Escape the Ayuwoki

Scary. Exhilarating. Awesome. I absolutely loved the free version of Escape the Ayuwoki and love this Steam version. I love it when the Ayuwoki smashes, eats or stomps on a rat. I love being able to use other light sources and have ways to district the Ayuwoki. I love all the lore and occult stuff in the game. I sometimes enjoy making the Ayuwoki go into rage mode just for the hell of it. I have played this game many times and beaten it, so it can be done! I like the tutorial because you get a sense of what to do, and I enjoy the Mattresswoki in the tutorial. I love Michael Jackson, and I mean no disrespect towards him when I say that I enjoy this game. I would recommend it to everyone to play it. If you enjoy a good horror game and being chased by a monster that gives you the heehee geebies, then, play this game!

Yes yes, it is made a little poorly. Though, it is a little and nice indie game.. I know people might hate this more than the original, and i agree but the AI and stuff are a bit better than the original. Some people had trouble with dying and starting all the way over but thank GOD they added checkpoints now! There’s no way to beat this game without checkpoints, unless if your a really good gamer! Chapter 3 kinda gets buggy, the AI is too hard and when i’m really quiet he hears you anyway! Though besides some glitches and AI is kinda rigged, its not that bad for a indie horror game, i have played worse! Though the price is not worth it and i think this game should be worth atleast $3-$7! Besides that it’s good! Don’t judge too much on this game since barely anybody worked on this game, that’s why it’s called a INDIE game

Dr. Milo’s Revenge… what can I say.

Good game.

10/10.

Favorite game of all time.

Dr. Milo’s Revenge is a low effort troll comedy horror game. The gameplay consists of… finding things, avoiding a slow moving doctor cat thing and running when said doctor cat thing spots you. Revolutionary game mechanics I know.

You start off as a science person who is doing unknown research in a science facility in the middle of a snowy tundra. The power is off and it is up to you to turn on the generators to bring back power to your science facility. One of your fellow researchers “Dr. Milo” is also mysteriously missing. Dr. Milo being a cat doctor hybrid wielding a pipe? like weapon. Milo will try to stop you at each area where a generator is located. By stopping you, I mean, running at you very slowly while making a very loud earrape level sound, that is honestly the best thing about the game, it’s a fucking terrifying sound. When he catches you, Milo smacks you with his pipe. You can take multiple hits from his pipe so it’s not difficult to survive him.

Volframe did something I personally have not seen much of in horror games- not since a long while. S.W.A.N. Chernobyl Unexplored (SCU), takes an actual tragic event of the Chernobyl disaster and poses a “what-if” twisted spin on it, while walking on eggshells around the former albeit intermittently.

SCU rests firmly alternating between the hopelessness of S.T.A.L.K.E.R’s radioactive wasteland of anomalies and also the plaguing atmosphere of Metro. With the exemption of gunplay and action, SCU is more of a straight-up psychological horror you’ll come out of frustrated, regretful and sorrowful, perhaps even mad… All of which capture the wave of emotions behind the controversial incident~

All in all, an OK game with a very interesting concept. The horror element of the game was something nailed in the ambience, and much less in everything else such as scares and silly, repeating and boring, even annoyingly buggy which might have you restart a 20 minute boring sequence TWICE. Great concept, interesting story, poor execution. Buy this on sale if it is at least 50% off. That’s what it was worth to me.
