Spirits of Carter Mansion

Spirits of Carter Mansion

The idea for the game was good, execution not so much. The directions were really confusing (North, South, East, and West instead of Left, Right, Up/Down Stairs, Down the Hall, etc.) and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it. I felt like I’d be upstairs and then the next thing I know I’m staring down the basement stairs somehow. This wouldn’t be too bad if there weren’t so many different directions to go in. I feel like if I really wanted to try to figure it out I’d have to take a pen and paper and physically draw a map, and it’s just not effort I’m willing to put in. The way the game is laid out makes the layout of the mansion really unclear. When I downloaded this I was looking for something fun and a little challenging to play through, but instead it feels like I got something that was going to require a lot of work. If you’re into that sort of thing I think you’ll like this game, but if you are like me and are just looking for a game to casually play, maybe try something else.

The idea of this game is pretty alright but i think the execution just made the game all too confusing, the hand is a little unnecessary and it doesn’t really add anything to the gameplay. The directions you can go in should be labeled as left right etc.. or the actual action you are performing like: “go up the stairs” “go down the hall” “go into the room on the left” and once you know the locations it can be instead of “go to the room on the left” it can say “go into the pool room”.

The game seemed interesting enough we just got really lost and it took away from the fun of the game especially since the same image is used for multiple different rooms.

Xenomare

Xenomare

Xenomare is a fun little Survival Horror Roguelike it very hard and I died a lot. In this game, you have to search for items and do the task then leave. This is all done well having to avoid and hide from the enemy. There are a few maps and difficulties. I was mostly playing on easy and was still dying a lot. This game does have a big problem with the full screen being off the screen to the bottom right. I fixed this by using a program called Borderless Gaming. Overall, I recommend giving this a try if you like Survival Horror games and afford to spend $8 if not you can wait for a sale. Just know this game is still an Early Access Game so the dev is still working on it.

This game is honestly grinding on your nerves…

Slow movement, confusing quests & scripts, the energy limit that basically soft locks your game and forces you to start over from the previous save once you used up the energy and hence unable to proceed through triggering conversations.

You can’t talk to the NPCs in the game when you have no energy left, or do any actions other than entering different rooms.

The game is also quite buggy in times where you have scenes suddenly being jerked across the screen before settling down and allowing a go at the minigames.

Evil Tonight

Evil Tonight

If Resident Evil Village hadn’t come out in July, Evil Tonight would be my personal Game of the Year. ET is the whole package; excellent art direction, great music, fun characters, and intriguing storyline, and a simple but sweet and satisfying gameplay loop.

Evil Tonight is a kind of survival horror action adventure, just without the horror. Think of it as more of a supernatural survival thriller through a whimsical anime lens, and you’ve got a good idea of what to expect. Sharp writing and clever puzzle design alongside simple but fun combat describe the experience perfectly.

This is a wonderfully challenging game. Great spritework, solid animations and character designs to boot. Just bear in mind that all the enemies hit like trucks so do expect to die a lot. The bosses I feel are challenging, but I do think that the stamina system isn’t necessary considering you already need to get close and personal with enemies most of the game if you want to conserve ammunition and you get hurt if you run into enemies anyway. Plus, you don’t deal a whole lot of damage with the knife, so most encounters you should expect to swing at your enemies at least four or five times to take them down at a minimum.

It’s a great indie horror game.

First let me say, this is the best $2 I have ever spent.

The 2D artwork is amazing.

The puzzles are interesting and the pressure is hilariously awesome.

I really hope to see more games like this in the future from Justus Yew. I can’t recommend this game enough. Stop what you are doing, buy this game and thank me later.

Thanks for making an awesome game. I’ve yet to beat it, but I’m having a blast playing it so far!

Reviewer’s Note: Over 50 Hours with Humble Bundle Copy

“It’s late. At least, I think it’s late. Keeping track of time isn’t a priority - wherever I am now… like a purple nimbus cloud crackling with electricity. What’s important is that I’ve saved the world, and no one will be any the wiser.

“Not that I did this for recognition, no! I’m not vainglorious or anything. This was all honestly just a happy byproduct of my pursuit of arcane knowledge, of the Eldritch Truth. I was laughed out of the academy, and the very men and women who found my research so amusing now owe me their insignificant lives. If they had seen what I’ve seen, fought what I’ve fought, learned what I’ve learned, they’d still be laughing - restrained in padded cells, or worse.

I’ve already put quite a bit of time into the Humble Store version of this game and I have just recently claimed my Steam Key; so I am checking out all the new features, but I will bring you up to speed on what I already know about this game.

The Consuming Shadow is a roguelike RPG much in the vein of FTL, with the overall goal of the game being stopping a Cthulhu-esque entity (simply called ‘the Ancient’) from invading our world. This is done in both of the primary ‘game modes’ The Consuming Shadow features. The first is the overworld map, where you pick a town on your GPS and drive there via your very slow car to look for clues. Various ‘text-only’ events can happen both here and in the towns, where you will have to make a choice. These choices like FTL, can give you bonuses to your cash or equipment, or screw you over royally. There are often pieces of equipment you can use to sway these events in your favor, much like FTL.
