Blitzkrieg 3

Blitzkrieg 3

The “Don’t Escape Trilogy” is a collection of three short first-person point-and-click adventures with static screens (no camera movement, no scrolling). The games share a creepy atmosphere and a few gameplay mechanics, but are otherwise unrelated. In the first game, you play a werewolf trying to lock himself away before a full-moon night, so that he won’t kill anyone when he turns. In the second game, you’re trying to barricade a house and protect yourself from a zombie horde. In the third game, you’re the only surviving crew member on a spaceship and need to stop “something” from getting out.

Even though the entire trilogy is available for free on Armor Games, I chose to purchase this game series on Steam because that’s how amazing ScriptWelder really is. The Deep Sleep and Don’t Escape series were some of the first PC games I ever played, and I have ScriptWelder to thank for making my early experiences so magical. I have followed each and every game you have published on AG, hunted down every achievement, set of choices, and walkthrough I could find… simply, because every single second I spent in any of your games was one of either awe, wonder, fear, or curiosity.

My feeling about the game is mostly negative but I give it a good review anyway because, you know, you got to support your local businesses and also there’s a free demo, so you can’t really accuse the product to be a rip off.

Prolouge:

This game is the game which made me “Addicted” I never forget the day that a friend of mine brought this from Canada for me in 2006 and I installed it and while it was installing and downloading patches I was busy reading the amazingly designed manual to learn everything. I started playing for fun and after 2 years I decided to play like a real professional and it was the first game which made me to join tournaments. I honestly never ever forget my greatest RTS memories with this game, I dare to say it gave me more fun than Red Alert 2 did although RA2 was a better and more balanced game.

Have been playing this game since 2006, it’s a Real Time Strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by the now bankrupt THQ, based on the Essence Engine 1.0 which itself is a brand new engine inspired by the Impossible Creatures one which Dawn of War also used, albeit a modified version.

At the time of mostly stuff like Age of Empires, StarCraft and Warcraft were the dominant strategy games, CoH broke that mold by doing away with economic gathering and management by simply replacing it with a sector capturing system which generated resources for the player instead of stuff like wood, stock, gold and so forth you have Manpower which pays for your units, Ammunition which pays for your upgrades and abilities and finally Fuel, which pays for your buildings, some emplacements and your vehicles. Dynamic cover, something which only craters in Dawn of War provided and also destructible terrain, for the first time ever in a physics based RTS game were you allowed to create, destroy and use cover, your units could build sandbags, tank traps and emplacements, Tank and Artillery shells as well as stuff like satchel charges made shell craters on the ground giving your infantry light cover which helped them in the late game, I’ve often times had matches where the map looked like a side of the moon even.

Company of Heroes - Legacy Edition

Company of heroes is a masterful example of how Detail and polish on even the smallest of elements can marry Gameplay and theme to create something that truly deserves a place among the greatest games of all time.

Company of Heroes is a Real time strategy game with a WW2 era finish, and my god this finish is pristine. The game’s basic gameplay elements (both single player and multiplayer) are unique and offer true decision making and deliberation on your part to be successful; positioning of weapons teams and the will to only fight when you have something to gain is most important of all. Holding territory and maneuvering into a position of power is the game of war, not pointless bloodshed.

I remember having played this game for the first time when it was released. Being a fan of RTS games, especially the ones released by Relic, there was no way I was going to let this one go. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say I was literally hooked from the word go. No RTS before or since has been on the same level as this.

The single player campaign was just brilliant. If I had to point out a weakness, the only one I can come up with is that it’s a bit short. I just couldn’t have enough of it. But it’s not a perfect world. Relic’s competitors can maybe come up with a 20 mission campaign with mediocre results, but this one gave you 13 that were nothing short of brilliant. They were varied in terms of gameplay, offering multiple methods to achieve the objectives.

Battle Academy 2: Eastern Front

Battle Academy 2: Eastern Front

I’ve logged 18 hours on this game so far and plan to get to 100 in the next couple of months. I simply can’t get enough of this World War 2 tactical sim. It has it all: Every flavor of infantry and every type of Tank, Assault Gun, and APC. It even allows you (and the AI) to call in Artillery Strikes and Air Strikes.

While it is turn-based IGO-UGO, units belonging to the player who is not moving get reaction fire, so moving up to the enemy’s position is tricky. You need to maneuver properly, using ground cover and even smoke to cover your approach. A little prep fire from your tanks, mortars and artillery isn’t a bad idea either. ;-)

Debated about posting my first review but this game absolutely needs it. If you are looking for a good eastern front game with a half decent AI, that has turn based strategy-look no further. This is the game for you!

Pros:

The sound effects and music are first rate.

I love the simple but effective graphics this game has-the vehicles and units are accurate down to the ski-infantry Russian units. Even on my low end computer the graphics are pretty good with burning vehicles and dead soldiers everywhere. Beware this is not a “Put your head down close your eyes and go in!” type of game. You have to use your scouts and recon units to find enemy units then know exactly when to fire on them. I wait unitll my units can see “the whites of their eyes” before I let them fire and expose their position. Once the AI sees your units look out it is like having Guderian chase you all the way to Smolensk. You will have to employ tactices of fire and move otherwise your exposed units are at the mercy of German or Russian long range guns. This game has an excellent in game skirmish mode. I have tried to get it to generate the same map twice to no avail. Allowing you to choose the size of the map, the year and the location-plains, urban, Russian snow has great advantages and replay value including allowing you to choose how many cammands points you can start with to purchase units with. I have looked at the in game editor and it is great. Just waiting for a good manual to be put out before I start putting together my first map.

Skirmish Line

In this game you will see soldiers die caused by:

-Bullets

-Explosives

-Duds

-Fire

-Friendly Fire

-Friendly Fire Fire

-Friendly Fire Grenades

-Suicide Bombers

-And his 10 other Suicide Bomber Friends

-That Crazy Ass Jap with the Sword

-TENNO HEIKA BANZAI

-An army of sword tojos like its medieval japan all over again

You will see them all die over and over and over until you are one stone-cold commander of the pacific theater.

Edit: Now for the review

Skirmish Line is a WWII Rogue-Lite, RTS wave defense simulator on a tactical level, Specifically in the pacific theater. You command the United States army while the enemy commands the Imperial Japanese forces. Each with its own arsenal at its disposal.

I thought that one negative review, which is currently the most “helpful” review, was unfair and obsolete. Which is why i decided to write a review. It definitely is like Mud And Blood 2, but in the Pacific Theater, more content, and somewhat fairer.

Some stuff that it has that Mud and Blood 2 doesn’t have:

  • Banzai Charges. Essentially waves, except it’s sometimes more or less a mix of Japanese units, and even those in the front will also join in. As one would expect, they charge and melee any soldier in their way.

Hearts of Iron IV

Hearts of Iron IV

Let’s be real, you’re here because you want to finally have the chance to play as a Nazi.

Maybe you’re someone like me. I’m always the good guy, the Jedi, the Paragon, the lawful good.

Then when playing Hearts of Iron IV something in me snapped, I came to see that in these strategy games you are the villain, you are evil.

Embrace it, let the hate strengthen you, harden your heart to the lamentations of your foes, sit atop a throne of skulls steeped in blood and command all you survey.

If I’ve learned anything by talking to other gamers, it’s that if someone makes a game where you can kill people, some gamer is going to kill everything that can be killed in that game. Be that gamer, and enjoy this gem of a game. 10/10

Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe

Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe

I ve been playing turn based strategic games since the early 90s and I must say thisone is a true masterpiece. Since game is part 3 of the series, and after spending 100+ hours playing it, I must say its easy to learn basics and quite hard to master. Multiplayer is very challenging because game contains loads of possible strategies for axis/allied player (instead of first part of the series - SC1) .

From a grand strategy scale point of view - this game implemets MPP - military production points which Your side earns each turn from cities, mines&ports, used for purchasing various types of units (armies, panzer groups, corps, garnisons, AA, fighters, various bomber units…), research and diplomacy. Adaptability of usage of MPPs may differ from each game, since You must carefully watch research/diplomacy of the opponent to be able to counter it. Also, there are force limits, entrenchment, weather (very important) and various other factors which may be different from game to game and all this factors insuring that each new game will feel fresh and challenging.

Real player with 1102.0 hrs in game

I give the game a positive grade, because all in all it manages to be a balanced WW2 game, with diplomatic and strategic options. Modded campaigns tend to be a bit harder, since regular AI improved over the years but with some experience is still easy to deal with.

The game puts an emphasis on historcal accuracy, in some cases it even auto-scripts larger events; invasion of Norway and Denmark are the best examples. However, there are some serious unrealistic notes, that prevent the game from really becoming one of its best in the genre:

great game, multiplayer has some glitches that need to be addressed in the newer launch, however I’ve been having a blast playing a competitive scene that is lively and has new tricks and strategies. sadly a lot of matches devolve into arty battle, however if you get past that the game is great and i have a overall enjoyable experience.

NB : Comments from playing with the original Slitherine version.

Taking into account all expansions, I played over 300 PzC scenarios. And it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

This is first and foremost a “game” rather than a “simulation”, yet the game has plenty of historical chrome and details. It is really easy to get into the game even if you are not familiar with WW2 tactics. However there is plenty of room to showcase your skills whether tactical or for managing your corps. For those reasons I’m glad to see this game coming to Steam and a wider audience.

I edited my review and put at the beginning the important facts I see after more hours of play. Below comes my initial review.

Here are the important facts new players (old PG players) should know:

  • Better fighting rules. (Suppressing fire, easier attack when more units adjacent to attacked hexfield, etc.) Real good small things old PG players will love when they see it.

  • Better overall units and stats balance. (no overpowered PzIVF2 with range 2 for example :))

  • Special skills are transparent now: For good fighting units gain Iron Crosses (no effect) and brigade heroes, which give a random skill + 1 to 3 points. You see the result when hovering mouse over in detailled unit view or other GUI manifestations of these battle honours.
