Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars

Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars

If I were to describe this game in one sentence it would be as follows: A game with strong foundation, but a lot of underutilized or wasted potential. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and look at its strengths and weaknesses.

STRENGHTS:

  • ART. Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars features very high quality art that is best represented on Cards. I can’t praise art of this game enough. Everything is very detailed, atmospheric, diverse and just a pleasure to look at.

  • ATMOSPHERE. This one is a bit subtle but at its core this game makes you feel like a vampire ruler who is playing a deadly game of influence and warfare. The fact that game represents quite a few things with cards certainly adds to this feeling.

After playing for 100 hours, completing the campaign, and finishing +16 sandbox with all factions, i can say that this game is, for the better parts :

  • Stable/Playable (I encountered no game crash, nor errors, with the “worst” bug being solved by simply surrendering the fighting in which i was stuck.) (Played on an Acer Nitro N50-600, I5-8400 CPU 2.8GHz, NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB, 8G RAM)

  • Enjoyable (Some part of the campaign may be more difficult than others but taken on the right angle, they become easier.)

Fury of Dracula: Digital Edition

Fury of Dracula: Digital Edition

I hadn’t played this game since the 1st edition that came out in the 80s. Back then three Hunters chased a nearly-impotent Dracula around the map, eventually slaying him. Nearly every time, anyway. Dracula had hidden movement behind a screen, and left some rumors in his wake, but the damnable hunter cards would give him away at horrible times, and if you encountered him he would get caught during the day more than half the time (you rolled a die, but the hunters had more cards) - a vampire during the day is as feeble in combat as you would think. We called it “The Frustration of Dracula.” He was fun to play, but it was very difficult to win with him. Still, I have fond memories.

While no game is ever going to translate perfectly from the board to digital I have to tip my hat to Nomad games for taking on Fury of Dracula, not just for doing it, but doing a very capable job.

*When you read negative reviews about the lack of 1 vs 4 during initial roll out of the game, I have to point out that this was clearly posted on the store page well in advance and in the discussions. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone and it’s a poor excuse to give a thumbs down. It was perfectly clear and the developers have repeatedly stated why they released it as 1 vs 1 and 1 vs AI initially, along with their plans to work on and release 1 vs 4. Understandably, the developers want to get it right, so we just need to be patient. Their professionalism and consistent feedback to our inquiries leads me to believe they will get it done.

Hunters Of The Dead

Hunters Of The Dead

This game is hard to get a good idea from looking at it on the store page. It is really good though, I got it on sale and have been very pleased. It’s kind of like plants vs zombies as far as gameplay, but has much less variation in units you control. They do however add new and unique elements to it to make it not simply a boring clone of pvz which is what a lot of these games turn out to be.

The game does require a whole lot of luck in order to beat it. You are not going to beat this early on, not until you have played and died tons of times. Not until you have played and built up enough gold in order to add global upgrades for all new games. It’s good and bad in that sense, it makes it not too easy or short, but also a bit frustrating that it is almost impossible early on. I saw one review that said you don’t run into monsters that often, but I seem to get attacked 1 out of every 2 or 3 moves that I make. Part of winning is just pure luck that you click on a spot and simply don’t get attacked during the round your players are resting. If you run into an attack your first 3/4 or 5 clicks it’s going to be tough b/c your guys will be resting and you can’t do anything which just lets your village get destroyed. You could also start off and not get attacked for 6 turns in a row with time to build up a nice army. This randomness gives me so many mixed feelings on this game. I have had several games that I run into dracula on my 2nd or 3rd enemy encounter and then it’s either game over or nearly game over.

The first thing to clarify: it is a rather limited, very mediocre indie game. So, there’s absolutely no rush to buy it. However, if you do get it via some bundle, a big sale, or another occasion… It might be not too bad, for one evening.

Technically, Hunters Of The Dead is a mixture of rogue-like turn-based exploring of the city, infested with the undead plague, and a tower-defense-like real-time action, somewhat similar to Plants vs. Zombies. You have 5 lines with squares to place your troops, your base on the left, enemies move from the right end of the screen, attack your troops, if there are any in their way, or simply rush themselves to the base, to decrease some of its defenses.

this game is like left4dead in minecraft :p

so in general this game is 1 big map with zombies randomly spawned in it with random weapons spawned on random locations and you try to survive for as long as possible (i guess thats the point?)

while it has potential and the general idea isnt bad the game in this state is almost unplayable but nothing unfixable i think. so for now this is a thumbs down, it feels like a tiny demo and should not cost any money at this stage in the development

pros:

-funny looking characters

I also review other VR games on my channel: www.youtube.com/user/rpatenaude

I really had high hopes for this game but it just has so many problems and features shown in the trailer that are not actually there. It’s almost like the people who made 69 Ways to Kill a Zombie abandoned that project to do this one. IT DEFINITELY HAS POTENTIAL! But seriously finish the game before you release it. The trailer shows people riding around in trucks together running through Zombies shooting but that is not actually in teh game right now.

Slayer Shock

Slayer Shock

First, I owe the developer an apology.

I’ve wanted Slayer Shock for a long time, but the $20 pricetag and the very mixed reviews kept me away. Then it went on sale for $9 and I bought it. I didn’t like it very much, mostly for the reasons listed in other reviews (Does the stealth even work? The spawning). After an hour of playing, I decided it wasn’t worth a $9 bitching from the wife and I refunded it. I’ve never refunded a Steam game before, and I think I’ve been on Steam for around 15 years.

So this review is likely to be long. But before I begin I want you to do something. Type the word “vampire” into the search engine for Steam and see how many games come up. Now, assuming you’re a hardcore turbonerd like me, count how many -good- games there are that don’t start with the words “Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines”. Unless something changes in the near future the number of games is likely to be close to maybe either one or zero.

Now that you’ve done that, try counting how many games are basically a procedurally generated Buffy the Vampire simulator. Betcha you’re only going to see one! Seriously, that alone makes the game worth it’s weight in gold. The concept is unique enough that the nostalgia factor might be worth it to some people.

Latest (Experimental) Update Review

The updates for this game have elevated this game to the status of roguelike gem in my eyes. Before, I would have recommended this to anyone who is interested in roguelikes. Now, I would say it is an absolute must-play for any roguelike fan as well as point to it as THE quintessential introductory roguelike. I would say it is certainly better than the standard introductory roguelike recommendations (Brogue and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup) because of its streamlined controls, well-implemented mouse control (you can do everything there is to do in the game with a mouse), well-designed menus (best menus in any roguelike I can think of), high customizability (can play with 4 directional or 8 directional movement, with mouse+keyboard or controller, with tiles or ASCII), rebindable controls (surprisingly not common in roguelikes), gameplay that isn’t dependant on spoilers (lots of roguelikes require spoilers to progress), difficulty settings (so a new player can actually see the end of the game and learn of mechanics that would otherwise kill them), great visuals (Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup has static and admittedly subpar tiles while Brogue has ASCII that Golden Krone Hotel simply beats with animated 8-bit tiles), music and sound (once again, not common in other roguelikes), and just the fact that it presents interesting mechanics and gameplay to players much sooner than any other roguelike typically does (a common complaint with Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is that the game isn’t interesting until you reach Lair).

Disclaimer: This review is for version 1.8 of the game which is the only one that I played. My understanding is that the game has improved significantly since its release and some of the features that I talk about here have been added after the original release (for example controller support).

Pros:

  • The music is great and fits well with the vampire theme of the game.

  • I love the controller support. This is very uncommon for rogue-like games and allowed me to play the game exclusively on my tv.

VEmpire - The Kings of Darkness

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys card games. Both the art and music are beautiful, and the basis of the game is very unique. The developer is very open, honest, and passionate about making the game all it can be. To him, it isn’t just about creating a game, it is about a creating a friendly, helpful community around the game.

A HUGE plus is once purchased, you own everything, there are no in-game microtransactions. Though some may not mind them, paying real money for virtual items just seems foolish to me, especially as they can add up fast. That is simply my own opinion, but I’m a casual gamer to begin with. When I see microtransactions, I think “another way to milk money out of customers”. Wolfgang is VERY animate that such a model will never be a part of this game, and given his straightforward nature, I have no doubt that is the truth.

Oh how I dislike to review EA titles, but alas, those little kids who love to play critic, while not even having spent an hour to play this game, kinda force me to.

I´ve played tons of different TCG´s and CCG´s over the last 25 years (Dune, MTG, Star Wars, Battletech, Shadowrun, Illuminati, Jyhad, Mythos, Aliens/Predator, Kult and maybe 1-2 I´ve forgotten).

VEmpire doesn´t fall short of those at all. It´s a solid game, although still in EA, that will receive some further polishing and improvements, but is absolutely enjoyable and fun as it is now.
