“The last thing you hear before being exploded by an angry monkey? Ba-BOOM”

Some of you have never played Concept Software’s Alien which was released for the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Amstrad CPC in 1984. For the most part, I suspect most of you have not played Concept Software’s Alien directly because it was released for the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, and Amstrad CPC in 1984. But! Despite its near 40-year lifespan and the now-archaic hardware it calls home, I might offer the argument that you’ve been missing out. In fact, screw it, I will! It’s frankly amazing what that game manages to do with so little, and how hard it works on being an authentic companion piece to the seminal film it shares its name with.

Apparently this is a remake from a really old C64/spectrum game, and they made a great job on the graphics and music.

Nothing is explained but once you get the gist of it, it’s about moving from room to room and switching characters to do actions and guess where the alien is, pretty cerebral, slow and frankly archaic. This was acceptable in the very early 80s, on the first 8 bit computers, but difficult to recomend today unless you’re really hardcore nostalgic.

I might not be the target audience

Legion Tale

Legion Tale

disclaimer: I’m sad to put a thumb down mostly because there aren’t many reviews and this would probably weight a lot on the game’s rating, but I can’t recommend it as it is now. I’ve written my review in english in the hope that the developers could read it and possibly think about my issues and suggestions

Legion Tale takes many things from other games (mostly from Fire Emblem, but it also has the direction-facing guard and from Ogre Battle and an active system during combat to concatenate attacks through a very simple QTE, like in Legend of Dragoon), and while it would seem a great idea I’m sorry to say that it isn’t implemented very well.

A pretty decent game! Usually RPG adventure battle is not my thing, but I suprisingly taken a liking to this! The turn based game is pretty unique unlike usual RPG maker games, and the story is interesting. Worth the money spent.

Mini War - Three Kingdoms

More of a puzzle game, where you use weapon-named heroes to try and complete the objectives of each puzzle. Most of which require at least two play-thoughs of a puzzle. Those with some idea of Three Kingdom heroes may be able to associate weapons and heroes a bit easier. Recommend.

Reprogram

Reprogram

Reprogram is a side scrolling tactical game where timing is as important as positioning. You control the characters by assigning commands that will be performed simultaneously during a turn. That way, you’ll have to learn the enemy’s behaviour and think ahead when creating a strategy.

The story is about four guys trapped inside a truck with a bomb hidden somewhere, they are also being chased by terrorists for a reason they don’t know, but fortunately, whoever put them there gave them a marked map and remote controlled robots to help protect themselves. Throughout the game, they will try to find a way to get out of the truck, escape the terrorists, discover who put them there, reach the marked location and deal with each other.

Features:

  • 90+ different moves unique to each robot

  • Lots of items and equipments

  • Skippable cutscenes between battles

  • Each enemy has its own unique behaviour

  • 30+ battles

守卫魔兽-Guardian of Warcraft

守卫魔兽-Guardian of Warcraft

No english reviews so I thought I’d write one.

Game is pretty basic but is a ton of fun. You defend a giant slime through over 15 decently designed maps. It plays like an active tower defense game. You can summon creatures to move around and defend the slime, as well as build a variety of stationary towers to attack nearby enemies.

The translation is REALLY rough, basically google translate, but fortunately you don’t really need to read anything in this game so it doesn’t matter.

It’s also not well balanced either. The first few levels will require you to grind them to level up and unlock new summons and tower upgrades. My best advice would be to max out the ice tower and the teleporter since they seem to be the most effective towers. But once you can clear level 4 you can pretty easily clear the rest of the game

8-Bit Attack

8-Bit Attack

8-Bit Attack: is a turn based tactics game where the player takes control of a hodgepodge of heroes from across multiple fantasy universes, and commands them as they defend the galaxy from evil. The evil lord Cthulhu and his minions of darkness threaten the destruction of all life as we know it, it is up to your strategy and wits to stop him. Battle through 4 types of levels before having to face the final boss himself, outfitting yourself with more gear and upgraded characters after each successful fight. Careful planning, coordinate attacks, and unique abilities are crucial in deciding whether your team emerges victorious, or falls victim to the invading monsters.

To be fair, I played the demo, so…

The menu is a little fidgity, when you move your cursor over a button the button will slightly enlarge and make a sound but sometimes it would repeatedly, quickly do that effect until I moved my mouse again. A lot of the buttons were hard to click, as if the hit-boxes for those buttons were not placed correctly. Music volume was super low even when set to maximum level.

The game is super hard, I played with four heroes (essentially 4P) but would repeatedly get beaten even at level 3 and 4 battles. It’s very difficult to win because so many monsters deal critical hits and/or multiple crit hits. As well as many of the common enemy tactics (orange side of die) are super strong even though they’re the most common tactic to be rolled. The last boss is impossible, because by the time you manage to defeat the champions, you’re all out of gas and the boss still had 75 HP (and deals at least 6 damage per turn; sometimes 6 to each player). The final boss will obliterate you in two turns.

I’m a very picky guy and feel bored playing most of the popular games. This is the single one filling the niche. Absolutely love it. Warning: it’s too addictive; I spent almost 1000 hours of in-game time in six months, more than 6 hours a day on average.

Oh Battle Brothers what can I say about you? A hidden gem from 3 years ago, only saw it recently such was the lack of advertisement for it and was truly surprised. Didn’t think games like this were made anymore. This is a medieval low fantasy mercenary management game. Oof what a mouthful. It’s a game where you explore the world map in real time and fight battles in turn based combat xcom style and just like xcom it can seriously mess you up at any time. It’s a game of stacking the odds in your favor while mitigating the adversaries odds as much as possible.

For a game in early access I was really impressed with how far along this game is and how smoothly it plays.

The amount of content will keep anyone interested for hours already, and I can’t wait to see what the next few chapters have in store once they’re released, not to mention the replayability once they add the other races properly!

I had only a few criticisms after completing the first couple chapters, and while I have more to say about them below than my positive points I go into detail because I want the game to improve and truthfully, the criticisms were more mild annoyances than glaring problems that would make me stop playing.

Times like these are when I wish I could give a ‘meh’ rating. I’m giving a thumbs up because I like the game. But this a hard, hard sell.

For clarity’s sake, I got this in a humble bundle, so I got it cheap. Despite this, in some way I feel like I didn’t get a quality product. This is frustrating because there was not a moment with the game I didn’t enjoy, and I’ll probably keep enjoying it. But that’s mostly because of the kind of game player I am, the sort that enjoys a tactical challenge because I find it relaxing.

Story

During the intro, your heroes, Halea and Gwennel, have received a cryptic letter. They meet in the middle of a forest and sling questions and confused statements at each other. Halea appears to be a knight or a warrior of some sort, with axe and shield. Gwennel is most certainly an Elven ranger, clad in green and bow-decked (like being bedecked but with bow in hand). While our heroes are chatting, Goblin 37 approaches, stating that he also received a letter. Traditionally, Goblins are enemies in this world, and the characters are understandably confused. Things don’t exactly get clearer when a wizard named Elmar appears. He insists, quite enthusiastically, that the group kills the Goblin, and the tutorial begins.

Wow this is a great fun fantasy strategy game with a distinct, quirky, and super entertaining sense of humor. I’m a newbie to strategy games like this so I played on easy mode (there are three available difficulty settings which adjust enemy hit points) but I just beat the game and had fun from start to finish, and only wiped a few times. The strategy is interesting and fun to play and if it had been strictly a strategy game it would still be great but the developer hired a brilliant youtube comedian to write the dialogue and that humor shines bright and makes every intermission between levels a pleasure. The party progression is cool being based on a few statistics and the equipping of gear in your party and one of the coolest quality of life features is the awesome ‘auto-equip’ function which completely smooths over the process of inventory management while still allowing for customization and allows the main focus to remain on the combat and the entertaining dialogue. The quirky and hilarious dialogue is primarily presented in the form of conversations between the guildmaster and their guild between quests. After every quest you will see that some of your guild members have something to say and when you talk to them about the previous mission they have a hilarious conversation of some sort every time. The creativity of the humor and story doesn’t wane as the game progresses the dialogue maintains solid high quality entertainment all the way through (even through the ending). I love how as I progress the guild is starting to fill out with people. I love seeing more and more people in my home base and it reminds me of the game Suikoden which I loved. The developer is a cool and approachable person and he is active on twitch (where he streams twice a week), youtube (where he has been making videos for about 10yrs), and twitter as @jimplaysgames and on his own website at jimmakesgames.com.

Kuro Tactics

Kuro Tactics

This game reminds me of playing Fire Emblem Sacred Stones on Game Boy Advance!!!

I love the art style. I like how the items actually matter a lot. I like that the plot didn’t take itself too seriously, which made it fun. My favorite level was actually the final level, it was a unique mechanic and a challenge.

This is a great tactics game that only took me a few hours to beat!

Didn’t really know what to expect when playing this game….. but honestly found myself getting wrapped up in it. Damn near 3 hours out of nowhere and very rewarding item progression. I like the freedom of character builds as you aren’t hard-lined to one play style for each class of character. Pretty noteworthy for an Indie title. If I didn’t have to work tomorrow I would have kept going.

Challenge 10/10

Story 8/10

Gameplay 8/10

Bang for your buck 11/10

In my personal opinion, I should get an hour of enjoyable play for each dollar I spent. So far I’m on track for more than that and I’m only halfway through. Just gotta keep in mind this is and Indie title and only has a single developer. Show some support and who knows?
