GolfTopia

GolfTopia

This is an early review. At review time, I have about 2 hours of gameplay, and about 25 hours of watching YouTube video.

I have sufficient knowledge to give a good review..so bear with me.

First, I am a life-long golfer, and first played in 1974. I am also a lifelong PC and X-Box golfer, having played just about every golf game ever made, from PGA Tour golf for my Pentium 1, up to all the Links series golf games, all the Tiger Woods, and especially every game that ever sported a golf course designer.

GolfTopia is the spiritual successor to Sid Meier’s SimGolf (2002). That’s high praise from someone who spend probably about a hundred hours developing the perfect golf course in that game. Then again, it’s been a bit of a hobby of mine over the years. I used to publish JNSE courses back in the early 90s and I still sometimes catch myself looking at terrain and figuring how a golf hole would lay on it. So I was pretty excited to see this title and I can say I’ve been enthralled with GolfTopia.

For those who aren’t as old as Methuselah and may have not played SimGolf, here’s a brief rundown of the game play loop. You have a top down view of the land (randomly generated) and you start designing golf holes. Your guests will be happy, or won’t, depending on how interesting, difficult and fun the hole is to play. Make it too easy and the golfers won’t like it. Make it too difficult and they’ll storm off the course after punching someone. Make it too much like another hole and they’ll get bored. The more interesting the holes, the more money you make. That allows you to upgrade your facilities and build more golf holes with higher fees.

Deepfield

Deepfield

Deepfield is a sandbox RTS set in the tiny world of microbiology. Deepfield’s microverse is alive and contains many biomes, each with their own mix of environmental mechanics and unique enemy types. Find and exploit resources, multiply in number and expand your territory to fend off extinction.

Sectors & Biomes

The Deepfield microverse is broken up into many smaller play areas called sectors; small groups of connected sectors make up a biome. Each biome has its own mix of environmental mechanics and unique enemy types; players will have to constantly adapt and pivot strategies in order to spread their influence across the microverse.

(As of 0.4.0, biomes and environmental mechanics have yet to be implemented)

Capital Units

The most important class of unit; if all your capital units perish, game over.

Capital units have a wide range of capabilities but most importantly they can store resources and use them to spawn new units. They are the only type of unit which can use the mutation mechanic to enhance their capabilities and the only type of unit which can initiate travel between sectors.

Mutations

It’s an expensive and lengthy process but your capital units can be improved by mutating.

Mutations can change a wide variety of things. They can unlock new units to build, modify capabilities, boost/change stats and more.

Some biomes will be so hostile to a particular species that without mutating, units will die to the environment.

(The mutation system in 0.4.0 is a placeholder, this mechanic will be completely overhauled in the future)

RTS, not “RTS”

At its core, Deepfield is an RTS, however, it takes a lot of elements from other genres such as sandbox, RPGs, open world games and MMOs. This makes Deepfield unlike traditional RTS games.

The Deepfield multiplayer microverse is alive and persistent; it ages, changes and eventually dies. Your units continue to exist and will carry out simple tasks even when you’re not there. Players can drop in and out of the microverse at any time. How all this plays out can be configured by the host.

In multiplayer there are no specific PvE or PvP modes. Diplomacy is fluid so how you interact with others is entirely up to you; you can attempt to crush everyone you meet, create long-lasting alliances or cooperate until it’s no longer convenient.

Played for 7 hours was more than enough. Good try for a 16 year old. Gets boring fast.

  • Fly traps don’t work is always 0 flies.

-Drill does nothing when right clicked on

-Door does nothing when right clicked on and never closes anyway

-Chicken coops don’t give more chickens even if bar is kept in the middle. Easier to just pick it up and place it again for full restock.

-Trees stay fallen 50% of the time and need more chopping before they disappear.

-Wheat has no icon in inventory when fully grown and picked.

Not ready for release. Needs an intro reading book or small help window, not some guy speaking in french, (which I do not speak or understand), to give a long video explaining mechanics and needs more content and building/crafting details per item so people understand what the item is, purpose its for, etc… Also the first day I had four men show up and had no weapon to craft to attack them. They destroyed everything.

This game has very relaxing music and is honestly very fun to play. Something about hearing that duck sound effect for every duck you shoo is very satisfying. Simple yet fun, I also love how it gives you the option to create your own path, so the ability to strategize to fit your play style is fantastic. 10/10 would recommend. You can’t beat free. Most other games like this cost money.

Far Sector

Far Sector

You’re a spaceship captain, and your objective is to explore the depths of the far sector. Build, research, and use the sector’s uncharted horrors to your advantage. How far will you go to accomplish your goal? What are you willing to sacrifice? The decision is all yours, captain.

Your own space base

  • Build, improve, and optimize. Ensure that your station can withstand whatever is thrown at it.

Encounter the horrors of the far sector

  • Meteorite fields keeping you from getting through the cold cosmos.

  • Spatial anomalies that challenge the very laws of physics humans have used to understand the world around them.

  • Strange organisms with qualities never seen before. They bring with them incredible danger as well as the opportunity for scientific breakthroughs.

  • Space madness and paranoia that wrap themselves around anyone who has been in deep space for too long. While most people aren’t prone to this problem, a few of your crew members are going to get progressively worse as your travels go on. How will you avert a crisis?

  • What else does the far sector have in store for you?

Make the best of catastrophes

  • Use mold-contaminated cultures to filter oxygen.

  • Study notes of madmen to find encrypted coordinates.

  • Spill the blood of an all-consuming alien life form to create a regenerating ointment.

Text events

  • Everything you do and anything you decide can impact what happens next, leading to unexpected situations.

  • Choose carefully and make wise decisions knowing that each choice you make could be crucial.

Crew members

  • Have skills, attributes, and weaknesses that impact their work speed, their stamina, the resources they require, and the situations they tend to bring on.

  • Can get sick or make breakthroughs in their area of expertise. The Eureka! events that happen to scientists can leapfrog you into the future, even giving you new tech you wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

  • Sometimes write personal journal entries that tell you more about what’s happening outside the confines of your mission.

  • Need a watchful eye since it’s somewhat difficult to find new people in the depths of space.

Anything can happen, even in the safe zone

  • Random events

  • Meteorites

  • Fires

  • Short-circuits

The effort you put in now will pay dividends in the future

  • Expeditions' data will be sent to coalition headquarters, and you can start your next mission with an even better technological base.

Idol Hands

Please read completely before making full judgment. The TL;DR is at the bottom.

Before I purchased this game, I saw that the top reviews were negative ones. However, I liked the screenshots and description, and I am fairly open-minded with low expectations, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I think one of the biggest problems is that people are going into this expecting more than what it is. The popular tags really should include “Casual”.

Overall, I liked it. It is a God game, but on a Casual scale. It does not reach the grandiosity of many other God games. I can understand how there are so many negative reviews, especially the ones made on release day at a higher price point. Considering Pocket Games planned to, and did release, an iOS version after PC, I think the design was targeting mobile from the beginning. This game is limited in scope, scale, depth, etc. I will go into it more later.

Positives: Easy to learn game! I figured out how to do everything even before the tutorial was completed. Very simple graphics, so it runned great on my old laptop (Which is 5 years old.) It’s kid friendly, and I was not sure wether I was playing a childrens game, or a adult game. I’d say it’s perfect for kids. It has some great charm, and the kind sensation the game gives a impression off, feels really good! It lightened my mood. Cool graphics when lowering land!

Negatives: I couldn’t descide what buildings to build, and where to place them. The Furlings did that for me. I really disliked that. There was no way to make roads, and more fancy looking towns. There was no structure, or streets, walls for protection etc. Just a town, and all I could do as a “God” was to create land. And I could do some natural powers, such as rain, lightning, vulcano, etc. But those got old, pretty fast, because of the graphics when shooting one off. Annoying to see it come up in a circle every single time, and being locked to it… And making a pathway from one hight level to the other was hard, seeing as how when I just lower ground it is in the shape of a hand, while highening lang was more “correct” in my head, as it highed only a nice radius around my cursor. The game only had 8 levels, and 3 bonus levels. The last bonus level was dissapointing, even though I get why it was as it was. But the game story in general was very dissapointing. I had hoped for a bigger challenge, and a longer story. It seemed to me, as if the developers gave up on it.

First things first:

Remember: The game is a low-budget-game in early-access!

There is no reason to offend or slander the developer. Although the game isn’t finished yet, the developer already fixed some serious bugs and released some patches. Feel free to report bugs in the discussions, the developer actually reacts to it. Be constructive, be polite.
