Rusted Warfare - RTS

Rusted Warfare - RTS

OVERALL: Excellent simple game presenting solid RTS fundamentals with a non-threatening interface. Limited balance issues (but nothing super OP) and occasionally awkward pathfinding occur, but the simplicity and variety of gameplay through such simple mechanics plus a reliable lobby system makes the game a ton of fun.

NICE BITS:

  • Units and economy are simple. At time of writing, there’s only one resource to track (though the dev does plan to add more forms of economy later), and units don’t have “special activated abilities”, they just shoot stuff. Some shoot up, some can’t; some shoot long, some short. Dev’s done a really good job of balancing basic play styles so most games are pretty fun.

What can I say. I love RTS games, and this fits into the catagory of what I love IN a RTS game. It has amazing diversity, the AI keeps you on your toes, custom maps, mods, and the multiplayer is very easy to set up. This is a gem of a game, im excited to see what it will hold in the future.

Pros:

+Cheap

+Many maps + custom maps makes good replay value

+Multiplayer is very easy to use, and setting up a game with friends is quick

+Unit diversity is ever expanding, from many types of aircraft to mech

In my opinion, I would recommend that you should buy this game if your considering to buy it. The game is pretty fun, considering that its graphics and everything are like pretty old but I like it. Also, If your considering to buy it and not sure, well make sure that you want to spend $20 and also to make sure that you like Star Wars or you just wanna play this because it looks fun (Which it is). Some things I suggest though when you buy the game.

Suggestions -

  • EAW (Empire At War)

Once bought the game “STAR WARS™ Empire at War - Gold Pack”, you will see either EAW (Empire At War) or FOC (Forces Of Corruption). Since you have bought the game just now, your experience might not be the best. Consider that you load into Empire At War, have some practice or do the campaign if you want, it was pretty good in my opinion. Skirmish Battles or Galactic Conquest in #Single-Player is pretty much your options to practice in EAW (Empire At War)

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance

This game…

Well, I can honestly say that it is not only one of the best games I’ve ever played, but I would also dare to state that -in my opinion- this is THE best RTS of all time (possibly excluding Total Annihilation, I’ve never played that.)

Attention: If you just want to see my rating of this game, skip right down ahead to the bottom of the review.

Okay, so assuming you didn’t just skip all this, here comes a more in-depth explanation.

This is an RTS, real-time strategy, but you’ve probably already figured that out. Firstly, I will go over the base story, which is told during the opening cutscene. (You’re totally free to skip the story part too, if you want to. Just scroll right down a bit, I will mark it off with a few —-)

Just a heads up, this is my first review so I apologize in advance for any suckyness. Also I have played much more off of steam. Also this goes for both games.

The best game “ever” is a very hotly disputed subject. Most people say it’s WOW, or Halo, or CS go, or COD, or Shadow of the Collosus, or some other game with a big fandom. All things considered, I say this one, because I truly believe it has (almost) every aspect of the ideal, at least strategy, game.

Impossible Creatures Steam Edition

First of all, I’m biased– I’m one of those strange and twisted folk who kept playing this game after its original release fell into obscurity, and for years now the Impossible Creatures community has been fluctuating with an average of a dozen or so people at any given time, worldwide. But then, one day, Nordic Games approached us few survivors and told us of their plan to re-release the game on Steam; we jumped onboard as beta testers, and the day has finally come for release!

So yes– basically, I’m not the most impartial of sources. But it’s important for me to point out that Nordic has in no way asked or cajoled me to provide this review, nor have they had any input into its content. I’m just a fan of the game. In fact, I know the game inside and out, and that’s why you should listen when I say: holy shit, Impossible Creatures is amazing.

Wow, this game. Where to start? Like many others here, I’m a bit biased, as I’ve owned this game pretty much since it was released and it was a big part of my childhood gaming experience. I’ve been playing this game near-constantly since I got it all those years ago. The ~540 hours on the Steam Edition don’t even touch the thousands of hours I’ve put into this game over the years.

IC is truly incredible and there’s just something about it that keeps bringing people back to it. Maybe it’s the super-simplistic RTS gameplay that’s easily accesible even to genre noobs. Maybe it’s the seemingly endless number of hilarious creature combinations possible in the army builder, even without mods. There has to be something, because I havent got bored with it, even after 13 years.

Total Annihilation

Total Annihilation

This is one of those old games that age really really well. like the GOG version it works fine on newer systems. And no need for mods to get 1080p or higher. As the game even back in 1997 did scale to your max windows resolutions, sadly the game UI don’t. Nor the radar. So at 2K or 4K they are really tiny. And ofc this has the addon “The Core Contingency” and lots of other old bonus missions. And yes. I use Win10 and it works just fine. At the time of this writing the Arm campaing is done, 11 hours played and not a single crash…

My favorite game as a child, i quickly snapped up the DRM Free edition availible through GOG.com. Now OTA is here on Steam in all its glory! It wasnt Starcraft or Command & Conquer that set the bar for late 90s rts games. OTA is the undisputed and most refferenced old-school RTS that to this day inspires the finer qualities in the EPIC War genre we crave.

Its important to note though steam failed to mention it in the product details This edition includes all DLC along with the main game (Original Total Annihilation, Core contengency Expansion, All of the Battle Tactics Expansions, Bonus Maps, Bonus Official Cavedog Units, Patch 3.1 known as the “No CD Patch” Patch 3.1 also is tweaked with the expanded unit cap which can be modified in the system files to a maximum of 5000 units per player in a 10 player battle. updated and fully supported multiplayer hosting for matches complete with thier own communities… The Added bennefit of the Steam Edition is access to the steam community for multiplayer compatibility. by comparison it is identical to the GOG edition with exception that the steam version has better compatibility with modern windows OS. Both copies work seamlessly with Wine if you use Linux or Mac. I reccomend the Steam edition for ease of gaming with friends. but the GOG.com version is DRM Free meaning you can buy one copy and then gift as many as you want to your friends per thier TOS agreement.

Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath.

What a game, really. I’ve loved the CNC and Red Alert series since RA1, what a classic. But this is, sadly, the best, most recent game out of both series (in my opinion).

I haven’t played much of the single player, because WHY? The skirmishes are so fun, there are many different strategies to try out, try different challenges like vs one easy AI and two Hard, capture the easy base early game with minimal resources, e.g. engineer and a few troops, get their tech, have yourself TWO ultimate units, MARV and REDEEMER for example. The unit ranking system is basic but great, very rewarding for looking after your units and keeping them alive through battle trades.

GAMEPLAY:

Kanes Wrath further spices up the C&C3 universe in terms of gameplay by adding a handful of new units as well as multiple sub-factions. These sub-factions also have their own exclusive units and overall play styles; in addition there’s a new game mode known as global conquest to which the player tries to achieve global domination. This game mode includes TBS & RTS gameplay elements .

STORY:

What really sells this game as a MUST PLAY is the story, assuming you’re a Tiberium Universe fanatic.

I would’ve recommended this game months ago but now the team ladder just doesn’t work properly. The team balance used to be good, but now it seems to be based on average score. This is a problem since higher rated players can team up with lower rated ones and play with people in the middle. This has become increasingly frustrating when one member of the other team it’s over 500 points higher than you are and overpowers the other team only because the other players have a lower score. 500 points in age ladder its a lot, and in a 1v1 scenario in a team game, it shows.

Not only the original game is actually good in the first place, but this is likely the only genuinely great ‘remaster’ out there as well with many modern features, new additions, and improvements without significantly changing how the game plays, and also provides thorough tutorials to warm up newcomers into utilising popular strategies used in multiplayer. It also remade all of the AoF campaigns to be of higher quality with the rest.

The only complaint being that the remade soundtracks are hit or miss, but even then the devs still give you the option thanks to mods.

Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor

Company of Heroes review

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts review

Short Review

How not to be disappointed by this Tales of Valor? Of course, it is based on proven foundations and robust technology. But with content as thin as a soldier dropping under the fifty-something ton of a Tiger tank, it’s hard to recommend buying it at full price, even for a fan of the series. This second extension is just as superfluous as Opposing Fronts is essential. And to top it off, the Soviets were still not playable. We now know they kept the Soviets warm for Company of Heroes 2 but at the time this extension was released it was a scandal. Get it in a bundle or when it is on sale.

There’s no ‘U’ in Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, which reflects the absence of a British campaign. There’s no ‘I’ either, but they probably should’ve worked one in. Considering the way most of this standalone expansion shifts CoH’s focus from the company to the individual heroes, it’d certainly be fitting.

Valor offers an evening or two of single-player content in the form of three mini-campaigns that incorporate its new concepts into well-presented but ultimately unchallenging missions. In the Tiger Ace campaign you control a single German Tiger tank that thunders through British forces as though it was in god mode – earning new abilities from an RPG-like skill tree for even more overkill. In Causeway, you control a handful of American infantry squads that might as well be composed entirely of Rambo clones – all you have to do is set them to attack-move behind their targets and let them do their thing, occasionally pushing the ‘revive squad member’ button when prompted. Falaise Pocket offers more of a challenge since you use more conventional CoH mechanics to hold off Allied forces while your wounded German comrades retreat, but it’s still only three missions long.

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

I am nominating Rise of Nations – Extended Edition {RoN-EE} for the 2020 “Labor of Love” award.

RoN-EE is the 2014 update of the “old” RTS from 2003,

when it won several GOTY awards for Big HUGE Games.

Despite its age, RoN has held up well, especially when I am in the mood for a quick Strategic War. A full-scale 1 v 3-or-4 game typically will run 60 minutes {game-time} or less.

Using ** pause /pause **can effectively make RoN-EE a TBS.

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition

The game from my childhood and the only strategy that I love to play even now. This is a remastered version of the game from 2003 and one of the most popular strategic games. Extended Edition contains the full contents with the addition of Thrones and Patriots. Rise of Nations offers a lot of nice campaign where our goal is to lead our nation to dominate the world. During the game you have to take care not to be destroyed by other nations but also develop a number of aspects such as economy, science, technology, diplomacy and military power. Each of these aspects will give you the opportunity to develop troops, build new buildings and to develop new opportunities in old buildings, but also move to a new era. With each progression of the game is changing the look and statistics buildings, military units and other things. Each nation has its own unique army as long as the nation still exists. In the game to expand, we have to use wood, stone, food, science, and oil at a later stage of the game, not forgetting that each of these resources can run out of. There is also an advanced diplomacy through which you can contain very beneficial agreement with other nation. In the game you can also play scenarios and multiplayer, but only with friends because no one plays. The game in terms of gameplay has hardly changed, improved graphics and added more resolution size. I like this production and do not regret a single hour spent at the game. Great soundtrack, an old but still nice graphics and a lot of things to do while playing the game. In my opinion this is the best strategy game I’ve ever played, many hours of fun for me. The game I am able to recommend, however, the game also has a bug that irritated me at first because I could not change my resolution because the game was crashing. However, it was manageable change in a text file.
