There May Be Ninety-Nine Of Us, But We Have To Win In Ninety-Nine Turns!

This game is pretty definitely the first time I’ve ever spent hours in training mode in a turn-based rpg. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who organizes spreadsheets in their free time. Even if you don’t, though, the pace at which it introduces new tools and concepts means you’re never totally overwhelmed, and while it encourages minmaxing, it’s never exactly necessary to perfectly tweak every character’s loadout. It’s nice.

Oh? You didn’t want me to hear me talk about this game? You want me to talk about Pokemon? Can that wait until the end please? Thank you.

Little Town Hero is Game Freak’s recent outing from their “Gear Project” system. Mixing the strategy from both card and board games, Little Town Hero offers a very unique RPG experience. Even as someone who loves the game on the Switch, I can only recommend it with caution because of the battle system. If you’re into card and board games that’s long and has loads of strategy, then you can jump right in, otherwise stay away from it. The lack of a free demo doesn’t help either because this is a game that sorely needed it. As of this writing there’s an issue with the pricing for certain regions, so don’t spend over 30 bucks for this until this is fixed. I even feel that the price is really steep, topping on this being a divisive title is a gamble.

Its such a wonderful game to play! In terms of other reviews issues I haven’t really ran into them aside from the intro being unskippable and start on a small screen but, fixable with options in the main menu. I love the music and mechanics of little town hero and the amount strategy needed when playing in hard mode!

Midnight Protocol

Midnight Protocol

I don’t have many games in my library - I’m quite picky in my tastes. I’m not usually one for hacking games but the Demo left me wanting more. After 22 enjoyable hours, I’m evidently happy to have added this game in my library. I waited to give this revieuw untill I finished the story for the first time - It will certainly not be the last. I’ll take some time to revieuw a few aspects of the game that might interest you most:

Gameplay/Mechanics: 8/10

A game is nothing without gameplay, and a hacking game sets a promise: it will not be just ‘a game’ - but one with depth, complexity, and decision making. To achieve this, Midnight protocol structures its gameplay around levels that feel like a labyrinth or puzzle. A Digital dungeon, if you will. To get around the various obstacles such as firewalls, encrypted nodes and ‘antagonistic’ system operators that chase you down you get access to hardware you can tailor to your playstyle, as well as a host of programs each with their own up- and downsides. You quickly learn how to balance them carefully, using fairly easy commands to allocate memory to the programs you need in order to finish the level. Suffice to say, Midnight protocol nails the hacker-feel you’ll expect. It is not all roses and sunshine of course - there is quite a reliance on RNG to many of the mechanics of the game that can make you second guess your decisions while they are actually fine, or save you when you know you had no right to make it. Aside from that, i found myself at times trying a level, finding where the hidden obstacles were, and avoiding them alltogether once I got to reload the level. This was- at times-unavoidable, and felt wrong. I’ve since noticed that these hidden obstacles are slightly randomized, at least in some levels, which alleviated this somewhat. Perhaps the developers could not just list potential ICE, but also include a map at the beginning of the mission (once you enter a mission you see the layout anyway, except in rare instances), that does not show the obstacles, but layout of the nodes beforehand. With this information I feel I personally would not have had to reload to adapt my strategy as much as I did.

🔵Has some additional unique and impressive gameplay mechanics.

🔵I was instantly Immersed by the story and the characters.

Gunlok

Gunlok

Gunlok is one of those very underrated and obscure games that most people have never heard of. I was in 2nd standard in primary school when the game was released; I was in 9th standard when I first played it, and today I am a banker in my late twenties. I personally loved this game and it is good to see that the developers are having another go at it. I hope more people play the game and get to experience the fun.

What I liked compared to the original 2000 version:

-If enemies are behind walls or on higher ground, it will show “Target obscured” instead of having your characters shoot away at them.

I played this originally a long, long time ago, but back then I didn’t get very far into the game. The graphics are so so, there’s a bunch of issues with the mini map, AI is dumb, and it crashed a couple of times, but it has this old school kind of vibe that can be very captivating. Easy to get into, not too many mechanics, but can be a bit challenging and lets you figure out things on your own. I wouldn’t call it a hidden gem, but I find it fun and something a bit different.

Radio Commander

Radio Commander

Overview

Set during the Vietnam War, Radio Commander is a realtime strategy game in which the player assumes the role of a company commander known by the radio handle of Papa Bear who has to accomplish military objectives by ordering two platoons via radio. Alpha Platoon is lead by a proud Texan named Kovacs and Bravo Platoon is lead by a black officer named Coleman with some prior combat experience. Unlike any other military strategy game, Radio Commander expects the player to keep track of platoons and enemy units by marking them on a map and radioing (frequently if desired) to the platoons to pinpoint their coordinates on the map in addition to locations of enemy units in which the platoons may be engaged in battle with.

After roughly 20 hours and earning all the achievements, I feel it’s time to put my look on this game into perspective.

The game is fun if you’re into pseudo-realistic military strategy games, in saying that it’s probably not for everyone, but it is fun.

Imagine a Vietnam era Tom Clancy’s Endwar, with a twist, you can’t see your units.

The three difficulty settings in the game are Story, Commander, and Veteran. The first 2 are fairly easy with the amount of micro and enemy difficulty, and the third kicks it up a notch, which is a very good thing for a game like this. It increases the difficulty to the point where you can’t just skip through radio communications all willy nilly. The combat your troops will get into is much more difficult for them to win on this difficulty mode, and you’re more likely to suffer casualties. Your troops can get lost if you keep them in a sticky situation too long before they pull out of combat. You have to keep your choppers and vehicles fueled up, or risk them crashing and losing the valuable crew they have, and the valuable asset they provide.

surprisingly fun

hard mode is very difficult. It forces you to get good to advance. but it’s still very doable. A puzzle with a thousand possible moves. a good challenge.

It’s very much more of a puzzle game than an RPG, but it’s still like an RPG in that any advantage you earn you keep

Also the undo button is great. You can go back about 30 fights. Great for testing a course of action

First I played on hard mode. It was pretty great for a while, but midway through the second zone it started to get really slow, because I was struggling to find ways to proceed without dying. I thought “well, it was fun while it lasted. I definitely got my money’s worth out of it already.” and was about to just be done with it. But then I thought I’d try normal mode instead. Started over on normal, and it definitely went a lot faster. But it turned out to be too easy after having played hard. I had literally 10x as much health saved up by the time I got to where I stopped on hard mode. No risk at all. But! the second run gave me some ideas. So I started over again on hard, and this time did better. made better use of my resources, and was able to save up a little more. and it paid off. Was enough to let me keep going.

This game is brilliant! Alot of fun if you like strategic/puzzley RPG games.

This was my first ever “Magic tower” game and i enjoyed it thorougly, its amazingly well designed, great music too!

The price is super cheap for what you get if you ask me, i think this game would easily be worth 5$.

The dev was also kind enough to help me with my savefile personally when i made a mistake that couldnt be undone.

I rate it 8.5/10

小小精灵塔防(Little elf tower defense)

A nice cheap Tower defence diversion with pretty good graphics.

Missing a lot of “bells and whistles” (ie range indicators and target priorities), but you will work it out soon enough.

May not be very long term, but we will see!!

Simply a really bad game. The assets appear to be cute, but you can’t see them. The controls are awkward at best. The characters are under-explained, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to upgrade them, but again, the game is under-explained, I might just be missing something. Made it to level three thru experimentation, but it is pretty tough. Cannot recommend, even if you find it for under a buck.
