Midnight Wave

Midnight Wave

Midnight Wave is a samurai cyberpunk tactical action RPG with immense customization, narrative choice, and innovative gameplay mechanic combinations, set in a world full of katanas, mega corporations, and elemental powers. Inspired by legendary classic titles such as Fire Emblem and Super Smash Brothers and more recent games like the Mass Effect series, Midnight Wave invites you to take part in a total genre mash-up adventure like no-other!

  • Innovative Combat: Plan your attacks on the tactical map, then battle them out in a platform fighter duel! No more RNG percentages. You control the action.

  • Old School Aesthetic: We’ve got pixel art vibes that’ll make you drown in nostalgia!

  • Narrative Choice: The story is yours, say what you want, do what you want, and make difficult choices that shape the world.

  • Characters and World: Everything is fleshed out! Explore and learn more about characters and the world, and watch as they react to your actions.

  • Customization: Customize all of your characters! Not just their equipment, but their appearance, class, and skills too! Unlike other games, in Midnight Wave tactical sprites, portraits, and platform fighter sprites all change appearance accordingly.

  • Elemental Combat: Wreak havoc on the battlefield with the elements! Freeze your enemies, burn them alive, or blow them away! Manipulate the environment to your advantage.

  • Local Multiplayer: Enjoy local multiplayer with up to four friends! Choose your character and fight head to head in platform fighter combat.

This is a wonderful game! I’ll go over three separate categories that stood out for me, then give a final synopsis. Thanks for checking it out!

Graphics - 9/10 - The graphics are actually pretty fantastic! I run it on a 4K monitor, and it looks great. I didn’t experience any graphical bugs, but I did notice a slight drop in quality for the background and the sky. It seems like a ton of emphasis - rightly so - was towards actual in game characters and actions (explosions, movement, etc). Take note of Total War, for example. Their backgrounds and skies are fantastic. Once that is fixed up, and a larger variety of maps are supplied, it will be great.

An interesting RTS/TD hybrid - run around panels that control a drone used to control your buildings and units that you can control to go FPS. Takes getting used to, but works surprisingly well!

Juno

Juno

Don’t try to save the world, try to save a city instead!

Juno is an RPG game named after its main character who lives in Nexus City, a peaceful city in most circumstances until events happen which make it a… not so peaceful place.

The pace of progression is completely determined by the player. How events occur and when is determined by the speed at which the players clear those missions. Clearing missions unlock scenarios which progress the true story of the game.

Despite being made with RPG Maker MV, Juno does NOT use turn based combat. Instead, it uses a rather active form of strategy combat in which you must navigate around attacks, pace your resources and combo skills for devastating effects!

Combat navigation allows for moving, regular attacks, special skills, guarding and evading.

Combining certain skills unleash a combo finisher which has boosted power, limited invincibility and amazing effects.

The game is not all about combat as missions can only be taken once a day, players can spend that down time clearing realms for crafting resources or taking part in certain special events.

Crafting in Juno is not like other RPG Games in which you simply collect the items on a list, press OK and then BOOM, you get the item. Juno has an optional Match3 style crafting system in which players can take part in for additional crafted items.

The game possesses a unique character customization feature in the form of [Soul Board].

The soul board allows you to fit runes based on level and shape. There are certain penalties and benefits runes can give with some penalties causing catastrophic penalties once certain lower limits are exceeded.

Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes

Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes

This is the game that made my childhood.

I always wanted to fight in the middle of a great war, inspired by the scenes made famous by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you have a love for strategy, armies of swords, and an album of metal rock to accompany you into every heated battle, this game is for you.

Some may compare it to Dynasty Warriors and I say that similarities only go up to the genre of hack-and-slash. Unlike Dynasty Warriors which involves an overpowered singular hero (the player) mowing down an entire army of cannon fodder soldiers, Kingdom Under Fire places great emphasis on the player’s ability to not only control their hero, but the squads of units that follow them. Soldiers are not cannon fodder - losing them and upgrading them can mean life and death in a battle. If not careful, players can fall prey from simply charging into the fray without considering the layout of the incoming enemy force. Cavalry is ideal for charging down foot soldiers, but die in seconds when inpaled by enemy spearmen. Archers must be positioned to avoid melee and so that their arrow don’t get hindered by trees. Believing that your hero can alone take on the entire world is hubris here. Strategy and game awareness go hand in hand here. Simple soldiers can do damage to you, underlining the notion that you are more of a leader than an overpowered hero with ridiculous amounts of mana. You are closer to Aragon leading an army of men rather than Lu Bu simply mashing the attack button to effortlessly make the world bend to your will.

Out of the first 2 KUF that came out, this is my favorite by far. 64 hours played here, over a thousand perhaps on original xbox (I managed to lvl up every single commander to lvl 99 back then with at least 4 troops to max lvl too).

This is a Real Time Strategy + Hack n' Slash game. You CAN’T win the game without doing both things during missions. So you must use your wit to realize when you should do one or the other.

Soundtrack 10/10, the heavy metal music during combat make it feel so fast paced and fun to rush around the battlefield hacking and slashing

The Immortal

The Immortal

This version is utterly disappointing, I was hoping for a much better experience than the console versions I played long ago. Honestly I played the Genesis version about a year ago so it is even more painful this PC versions lack of execution. Most of the interactions with enemies are barely as enthralling as the Sega Genesis or N.E.S. ports of the game, lots of missing dialog. The gore and fatalities in the Genesis version are strangely absent which makes me upset I sold that one thinking a PC let alone Steam edition would be the true experience…I was sadly mistaken. There is no options to change anything (including resolution), no save/load ability, no enhancements, no play this or that version of the game. Combat is slower than the Genesis also and there are no grunts or cries of pains when attacks land. Surprisingly the consoles music sounds better somehow too which shouldn’t be possible! PLEASE AVOID THIS WAS A SHAMEFUL CASH GRAB NOT A RELEASE THAT RESPECTED THE FANS!!!!!!

The Magister

The Magister

I really liked this game (after I completed it for all difficulties,

I updated my review).

Basically you are the magister/witcher and you are sent to a city

to investigate the murder. The game consists of four parts:

  1. investigation of the murder (procedural puzzle)

  2. tactical fighting with enemies (simplified heroes 3)

  3. deck-building for diplomacy (simplified ascension)

  4. leveling/customizing your heroe to be able to solve all challenges (see 1, 2, 3)

From my point of view it has followin strong areas:

Like the investigation games of the 90s…

This game reminds me of Grim Fandango and The Secret of Monkey Island from the 90s. It basically involves you running all over the place (from location to location), whilst trying to solve a mystery. You also occasionally encounter enemies that you have to battle, and the battles are your typical TRPG grid-based battles, but you use a card mechanic similar to Slay the Spire.

Pros: #1. TRPG fans will like the combat

#2. You don’t always HAVE to fight… most of the times you can talk it out

Toverblade

Toverblade

Superbly fun game to play and kill time, the attacks and deck building aspects are pretty smooth and simple.

  • Its a rather short play time for a game (as most sokpop titles should be in spirit) and I would absolutely love to see some kind of expansion on this game. It is a far fetched idea but it’s unlike any deck builder I’ve ever played.

Would highly recommend :^)

Real player with 8.3 hrs in game

Toverblade is honestly one of the most addicting little games I’ve ever played. It’s a game where you move around the board to deliver attacks to your wonderfully diverse enemies. Collecting all the different types of attacks as cards, and leveling up your little hero is such a rewarding and fun premise that if either you’re getting this on steam for 6$ or getting it as apart of your sokpop patreon subscription like I did, this game is well worth the time.

its a good game but i cant really fish whenever i try m guy runs into the water. and it would be nice if there was tutorial. besides that after you get the controls down its pretty fun.

Real player with 0.6 hrs in game

Little Big Guy is a Unity asset flip, that’s to say, it’s a bunch of Unity assets (and probably the game engine too) slapped together badly to make a clunky, simplistic, low poly “survival” game.

No genuine game development was done here, buying a bunch of premade assets (or downloading free ones), dumping them in an existing game template and dumping it into cheap game bundles doesn’t turn one into a game developer.

You can get Minecraft for cheaper than this and it’s better in every respect, and it’s also not an asset flip.

Mirastell

Mirastell

This is not a good game.

It’s very slow in the movement (painfully slow) and I glitched when equipping first weapon - I could not move my character anymore.

That’s not a good start.

Also, it was in window, but then went fullscreen without ability to window it.

And it’s menu had issue, that “Join our Discord” was out of screen, when window mode was on (just works in menu).

So wonder, it is Beta…

build your base, level your king, take people’s gold.. seems simple enough but smooth gameplay, decent graphics, events and tons of unlockable things make this super addictive.

you can easily play for free but i would still reccomend spending $5-10 early on to get a bundle of extra attack slot, extra spell slot, extra worker and the worker/gem bundle. they only offer it early on so don’t wait on that… also if you have friends playing it u can only use friend codes before level 10 i believe to get all the free currency from that.

Real player with 628.5 hrs in game

Many upgradable and customizable things. It has much depth.

Gameplay seems simple in earlygame, but should be okay in endgame.

P2W? Well, you can use gems for almost everything, but you can earn gems for free (events, tournaments, random rolls etc…), and what you can do with gems won’t affect gameplay, except some extra spell you can cast by spending gems.

Purchasing gems is very expensive and i doubt a rich person would spend so much to cast many spell. And gems you earn for free are enough to cast spells,
