Eternal Elements

Eternal Elements

In this challenging strategic tower defense game: towers are elements and enemies are materials. The elements interact with each other and enemies in unique ways (erode stone, freeze water, melt sand, shatter glass, corrode iron, etc.). Learn the best elemental combinations to defeat the materials in each wave. Challenge yourself even further with unlockable difficulty modifiers. Constantly gain power to take on even more difficult challenges.

Key features:

  • 50+ challenging and fun maps

  • 9 elemental towers to master

  • 14 unique enemies to counter

  • Build and manage towers while paused

  • Reduce the base game difficulty with accessibility options

This game has 3 core concepts that influence every aspect of the game.

  • Challenge: Each tower has strengths and weaknesses, so do the enemies. It will take cunning strategy to figure out the best way to beat each map. The game offers multiple difficulty modifiers and custom challenges so you can challenge yourself as you see fit. The greater the challenge the better the reward.

  • Discovery: Think about new strategies, discover new ways to play, and be surprised by what you unlock. With over 100 unlockables, multiple tower/enemy interactions, and a plethora of customizable gameplay options, there is no shortage of new things to try and strategies to discover. Let your imagination run wild thinking about unique challenges you could face and fun ways to beat them.

  • Progression: The game works by a simple formula, time spent = progress made. You can increase the speed at which you gain progress through the strategies you employ. But every enemy you defeat grants experience points regardless of if you win or lose. You will constantly gain more power to eventually beat every challenge you face.

Seconds in Space

Seconds in Space

Use ships to attack and destroy enemy space stations in real time.  Navigate through different randomly setup star maps to get to the exit and win.  It’s a 2D single player space game that’s massively replayable.  No matter how many times you play you’ll always have fun and feel dumb for making simple mistakes. There’s a wide range of difficulty levels so you can start simple then build your skill to experience the full depth of the game.

Destroy Enemy Space Stations

Command two groups of ships to attack and destroy enemy space stations. With a bit of practice you’ll quickly learn where to place each ship, when to attack what turret and how to counter their abilities, the hard part is mastering it. Only the enemy turrets have abilities so you must be extra focused on using your units as a team and their positioning. Dodge projectiles the best you can and when you make a mistake move a ship to safety and another one in to take some hits.

Just Get to the Exit!

Navigate through different randomly setup star maps to get to the exit and win. They have fixed layouts but the rewards and exit point are in randomized locations. Some rewards will help you and some will harm you. The better you think, plan and understand what to do the more prepared you will be. Even a slight difference in the layout of the star map can greatly change how you play it. Don’t worry though they are relatively easy to understand you just have to remember to take a moment to stop and think.

–Update 2–

2021-06-06

I finally took the time to finish the game. Achievements 3-8 don’t trigger even if you flawlessly finish a level. What’s up dev?

DO NOT BUY THIS unless you want a partially finished game.

–Update 1 –

5 Levels completed, achievements 3-5 not triggering, yet somehow there are players that have them? Verifying the integrity of game files doesn’t seem to help. It seems like the game is abandoned by the developer…

Major issues:

  • It seems like some towers with “abilities” do nothing? After testing them all it is unclear that the freeze and explosion ones do anything obvious. Maybe they buff towers around them?

Easily the worst tower defence I have ever played

So I played the first 3 levels and every single one of them I won by just using tower number 4 the sniper tower. And I couldn’t be bothered to waste my time playing the other 5 levels but I am 100% sure you can beat the game just by spamming that one tower. And it’s not even close, I would have 10,000 gold and probably a hundred towers and just watch the enemies die. There is a wasp thing that blows up towers which might be frustrating in a more balanced game but I could literally just build infinite towers.

Wonhon: A Vengeful Spirit

After playing the demo I waited for this for so long…. and the full game surpasses my expectations. More enemy types and mechanisms and more brain racking to finish a mission. Also if you played the demo, the full game lets you CARRY OVER YOUR SAVE FILE. Awesome.

So what’s this game? Well in addition to the descriptions above I must say, the AIs can be pretty aggressive… not knowing the map fully on first tries, you are prone to die a lot. (remember: your hon gauge fills up when newly possessing someone and use a bit of that to dash through walls at the end of the gauge to get away) The game does let you play with fewer enemies if you die too many times or are having trouble but no real manual difficulty setting which I like. It’s immersive. You can’t choose the difficulty in life. It was nightmare mode for the Koreans in 1920 every day.

I was captivated by the E3 presentation so much that I had to play. I love horror, especially eastern stuff like Fatal Frame, so I might be a bit biased.

It’s a fun game, but quite repetitive. There are a lot of bumps that I’ll explain, but nothing to serious to stop you from playing. It’s significantly easier than it looks, even offering to replay missions with fewer enemies when you die often, and never (visibly) penalizing you for it.

Much of the game consists of three different types of missions; slaying, in which you’ll kill everyone in sight, fetch quests, where you’ll sneak around to get something for some spirits eternal rest, and the unfortunate bulk of them, will be rescue missions (escorts). The Ai can only really get stuck in the same places you would, which you will likely memorize and avoid, which is bearable, it’s okay as they follow you quite closely at an inconsistent speed. Most of Challenge mode consists of escorts, which is off putting, but the main game is enjoyable enough for 4-5 hours, especially in terms of rich atmosphere, and locations through different seasons, the best part.

Chip’s Challenge 2

Chip’s Challenge 2

I started playing the Windows version of Chip’s Challenge way back when I was five years old. It took a good three years to beat the game, but they were three very enjoyable years. Shortly afterward, around 1997 to 1998, I discovered a small online community dedicated to the game, which was buzzing about a potential sequel. Sadly, by the time its development was finished in 1999, the sequel never saw the light of day due to publishing problems. So that should give you an idea of just how much time fans have been waiting to see this game. In the meantime, the CC community grew and started developing its own official fan-made sequels to the original game in lieu of CC2, and CC developer Chuck Sommerville released a successor to his original called Chuck’s Challenge.

It’s Chip’s Challenge 2, and I enjoyed it enough to play through the entirety all at once.

Took over 13 hours. Totally worth it.

Anyway, everything from the original returns here, as well as a huge pile of new elements that, though overwhelming at first, are definitely introduced at a reasonable pace. Some levels have time limits a bit on the short side for their puzzle (often these are bowling ball on rail puzzles) and there are quite a few more short time limit levels in the game: though these are more straightforward, where the time limit merely adds to the challenge rather than frustrates by running out of time right as you’re approaching the finish.

NUMTATE

NUMTATE

december 2021 edit: the 2.0 update revamped the whole game, so I edited the review to reflect the changes.

numtate is a portmanteau of number and rotate, and sure enough, it’s about rotating numbers so they add up to the one in the middle, called a core. luckily, not much math skill is required, as the core keeps track of the current situation, no need to constantly count what’s around. the core number is the minimum, not the exact goal, though most of the time you won’t have the luxury of going over.

Regimental Chess

Regimental Chess

I find this game very interesting, but with a few problems. When you get into a game with someone, either player can leave and come back as they choose, making it similar to email chess. The downside is that this makes it difficult to actually get into a game and finish it. You tend to lose track of the individual games when there’s a list of 10 of them waiting for the other player to make their move. I personally don’t like this Words With Friends/Draw Something style of gameplay as it can slow the pace of games to a crawl. The option of timed moves or a chess clock, forcing the players to stay and finish the game in a set amount of time would be a big improvement. That being said, when both players are actually staying in the game to completion, it’s very, very good. The changes to regular chess that have been made here keep the feeling of playing a chess game, but on a bigger scale. The ability to control groups of pieces at once adds a layer of complexity that is extremely engaging. At the same time, having the pawns engage each other one at a time, trying to open up a path for your other units reminds me of something out of a Total War game.

Regimental Chess is a modern take on a somewhat old concept where bored students would put a bunch of chess boards together and play a large bash with several sets of pieces, with a variety of different house rules for such games floating around.

It’s an unusual idea but the delivery here is quite flat, with barebones low poly chess pieces, multiplayer only but there’s no players (no AI, I understand that would be a complex undertaking, but if you set a high bar for a game, you should at least try to reach it!), a confused and annoying UI, quite a few bugs, and of course they want your email address. That’s the kind of stuff that will get any gamers hackles up, so it’s understandable there’s no players. Because of those issues I can’t recommend this.
