OneShot

OneShot

OneShot is a game I first heard about in January of 2021, a very long time after its release and I finally got around to picking the game up on 22 November and, since then, I’ve already poured 30 hours into the game. Simply put, it is a fantastic game that I recommend to everyone, even those who are not fans of puzzle games - I’m not one and I still enjoyed the game greatly and it is one of my favorites of all time, if not my favorite.

I love just how unique the game is compared to other games I’ve played. For one, it stars a lovable protagonist and you can’t really go wrong with that. But, not only that, the game is well-written in its story and it makes you feel a connection to the protagonist (whom is named Niko) and the world around them. It is the only game I have ever played to make me feel an emotional attachment to the world and character. The game is very intricate in the details it provides and there aren’t any major plot holes, which helps make the experience more enjoyable, plus it is just a fun game overall.

This game… Oh my god, this game. It was one of the best games I have ever played in my life. No other game has ever made me question my choices, even Undertale. I do not get attached to things or characters in games, but this one does that intentionally by making you someone that Niko (the protagonist) contacts directly.

! Another way it drags you into the world is by placing files or documents on your computer that help you solve puzzles; I have had no other game do that before.

Bear’s Restaurant

Bear’s Restaurant

There’s not too much I can say without absolutely ruining this beautiful and unique experience. Bear’s Restaurant more than exceeded my expectations and blew the lid off of the general idea of what a game is or what a game contains. I almost feel bad for calling it a game its much more than that, it’s an experience and a journey that I don’t think I will forget about. So, since it would be too easy to spoil by going in depth with an analysis I will try to be vague and only discuss specifics that have no bearing on experiencing this masterpiece. The game at its core is about a waiter/waitress cat, taking the last and favorite meals of people before they take their final train beyond the realm of existence to heaven. This is done by “diving” into memories to find out what those foods tasted like and peering into their lives and final moments alive.

Bear’s Restaurant is a touching story about life, death, friends, and family. It’s hard for me to really explain my feelings about this game concisely, but I have to say it’s one of the best I’ve ever played.

The updated translation also makes it so much more enjoyable now! I love this game, and I hope you love it too.

I loved the demo of this game and was HYPED to play the full version.

Without saying too much, I will say you should take your expectations of what you think the game is and throw them out the window and enjoy the ride! I fully enjoyed this very odd story. You can see the amount of love that went into this.

The Last Door - Collector’s Edition

The Last Door - Collector’s Edition

Who would have thought that the next great horror game would be a pixelated homage to Lovecraft and Poe? I had been following The Last Door’s development since its Kickstarter roots, and as soon as it popped up on Steam the game was in my cart and my wallet $10 lighter.

The game starts off ominous enough; a suicide, a letter, and a friend vowing to uncover the truth of it all. Set in the 1880’s, our protagonist Devitt embarks on a journey through forgotten memories that threaten to lead him to the depths of insanity itself. That’s not exactly what I was expecting from this game, but I am certainly not complaining.

‘The Last Door’ is a classic point and click adventure game. So much so that you can play the entire thing with only the use of the mouse. The graphics are beautifully designed pixel graphics that never feel like you are losing atmosphere. The story is intriguing and interesting with a feeling of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and has been called “A Love letter to H.P. Lovecraft” by Penny Arcade.

The music composed by Carlos Viola is phenomenal. In fact I would say that it is now in my top 3 most loved video game soundtracks after playing this game and worth the purchase price by itself. You can download the soundtrack from the website (https://thelastdoor.com/index.php/soundtrack) , although they have plans to include it in an update at some point in the Collector’s Edition on Steam. Here’s a bit of a taste from the Chapter 1 OST, which should give you some feeling as to the atmosphere of the game:

Unpacking

Unpacking

Unpacking is a gem. It’s a puzzle/discovery game with gorgeous art and great sound. In Unpacking, you’ll unpack the main character’s stuff during the moves she makes in her life - from moving into her own room as a child, to going to university, and beyond. My favorite part of the game is how you’ll learn bits and pieces about her every time you pull something out of the moving box, and see her grow and change throughout her life, all without ever seeing her on screen. It’s a subtle, yet beautiful, way to build a narrative.

This game is way too small.

I paid A$ 28.95 for a 3 - 4 hour game. You can 100% this game in under 10 hours.

I understand that you can only do so much with such a simple concept, but that still doesn’t justify the price-to-gameplay ratio being so low.

It doesn’t have a whole lot of replayability either. The concept is neat, and the execution is well done. However it needs much more content to be considered a good game.

I suggest the developers build on the concept a little, maybe double down on the puzzle portion in later levels; perhaps some levels the boxes don’t start in their corresponding rooms and you have to figure out where they go. Something like that to add some more content.

This game is a brilliant! I The world is so attractive that you want to spend hours in it and explore every corner of it. It was with great pleasure that I communicated with each NPC. Dialogues gave me so much emotions. I can’t remember the last time I smiled so much while playing. What about music, it’s sheer delight. She immersed me in the days of my childhood. And I really felt like a little carefree boy.

This is the best game in the last year. Recomend for everybody!

Homewords

Welcome to the worlds of Homewords! In this story focussed adventure game you play a mute boy who has to help a rude kid find her parents on an alien planet.

As Vincent, it is your goal to prevent Zoë from insulting anyone, be that human or alien, and guide her through increasingly difficult conversations to get closer to reuniting her with her parents.

Homewords travelling tips:

  • Explore the alien melting pot planet, Orbtüse, and discover it’s peculiar locations.

  • Hold intense conversations with charming and memorable characters.

  • Make sure Zoë doesn’t insult said charming and memorable characters by interrupting her mid-sentence.

  • Learn about alien etiquette to ensure a well-flowing conversation.

  • Use your trusty notepad to help Zoë make decisions, that is if she feels like listening.

  • Walk, run and jump around each location to look for items you can use during conversations.

  • This also applies to useless shiny items that Zoë wants to collect for the sake of it.

Katie

Katie

Hard to know what to say. I could relate very much to several of the themes in the story, which is told in an elegant, charming way. I didn’t expect to see anything quite like this on Steam, though perhaps I need to look around more.

I met the author at an exhibition at MIT. He got my vote for best of show. I think that if you are an indie game developer, which includes me, and if your game is unusual, these shows can be good because games that are really different do stand out from the others.

I’m going to make my case for Katie, because I really enjoyed it. It’s a walking sim first person kinda game, but it has little space exploration like yer Gone Homes and Firewatches. And it is a game about relationships where u don’t get to talk or choose lines or even… see an actual conversation between two characters, that goes back and forth. And at first my instinct was to keep my guard up about that, because these are genres I really like and its best traits were kinda… taken away. But a wise man named Davey once told me to see games for what they are, instead of what they aren’t, and here’s what it is.
