Gunpoint

Gunpoint

Gunpoint is a sidescrolling stealth platformer with smooth jazz, guns and cool hats.

I’ve never been a gigantic fan of platformers, but this game is a big, big exception in my library, and I felt I needed to address this by updating my review in 2020. I’m going to reinforce this by saying that I have MANY more hours than steam says, and it provided me with endless entertainment on a couple of bus rides half way across the country, and that says something!

Gunpoint is unique in that it’s stealthy gameplay extends much further than ‘sneak around, shoot guy’ with some pretty complicated puzzles made by the in-game wiretapping feature “Crosslink”, which leaves every level open ended, akin to something like Metal Gear Solid V in a completely new medium.

-Quick Review-

Gunpoint is an indie puzzle game with loose ties to “stealth” and “technology”, Gunpoint was developed by Suspicious Developments and released 2013.

-Detailed breakdown review-

Story: The story is all in written format, somedays I feel like reading all that is writen in a video game, other times I see a chunk of text and think “I don’t really care” and skip right into the mission.

Gunpoint lets you skip dialogue and jump right into the puzzle solving action if you feel so inclined, however the story is quite well written. You’re a detective and have multiple choices for interaction with your clients. (Naturally I was as condescending and insulting as possible – the reactions were very much worth it!)

Hilarious game play. Can’t seem to figure out the safe yet, but everything else is self explanatory. The game is meant for people with a sense of humor.

Mark of the Ninja: Remastered

Mark of the Ninja: Remastered

This is unequivocally one of the best stealth games around. It’s certainly one of the best Klei games.

The non-remaster version is no longer available on Steam for purchase so it’s a moot point, however:[olist]

  • Updated/enhanced visuals of an already fantastic art style.* Improved audio.* Includes the DLC “Dosan’s Tale”.[/olist]

Mark of the Ninja is effectively an instant classic as much as I hate the phrase. Seeing inspiration from the original MS-DOS Prince of Persia and the NES Ninja Gaiden with modern convenience and a stealth focus — Mark of the Ninja is what I’d call a ‘pure’ stealth game. What I mean by this is that fighting head-on is highly discouraged. But this does not mean you’re limited in how to accomplish the task set before you.

Rule number one: don’t get me killed.

Mark of the Ninja Remastered is a 2D stealth-platforming game. This re-release bundles a gameplay expansion, developer commentary, and improved visuals.

“Glint of Shuriken

Reflects as fear in the eyes

Of Tetsuji’s prey.”

As far as I can see, the sole improvements over the original release amount to some cutscene animation being smoother. Nonetheless, the game still looks fantastic thanks to the crisp hand-drawn art style and fluid character movement. The lighting engine remains mechanically simple, but objects turn black-and-white in the shadows, creating an excellent example of chiaroscuro.

Mark of the Ninja

I’m long time due with a review about Mark of the Ninja, as it’s gameplay and way of presentation captivated me from it’s first level.

Gameplay-wise the game is an stealth game - but unlike games like Thief series, here you can dispatch your enemies in various ways - if you want to.

You can arm yourself with incredible variety of tools - you can change your skin/cloth, resulting in a different combat style that can alter your health, pool of distraction or offense items, and sometimes introducing unique traits to that combat style.

I personally wasn’t a fan of Klei’s previous games, like Shank and Eets. I felt they were meh at best, extremely frustrating at worst. It doesn’t really help that puzzle games and beat em' ups weren’t exactly my forte.

And then they just went and released one of the best stealth games ever made out of flipping nowhere.

Pros (+) :

  • Excellent level design, 95% of the rooms have more than one way of sneaking around, and many of them will require you to use your brain. How will you get around these lasers ? How will you sneak past these guards ? How will you open that door ?

Underneath some not-so-great controls (I used X-Box 360 gamepad) there is a really well made game here. I recommend this game on the presumption the the dev(s) will fix the partially functional button remapping feature. Please, please, please let me rebind the bumpers to the triggers!

Pros

  • GREAT atmosphere

  • Simple and immersive art style

  • Simple, challenging gameplay mechanics and a fair amount of content for an ~$8 game

Cons

  • Fiddly controls (opening doors, movement with dpad, constant use of the left bumper [CRAMPS!]) which are not all rebindable at the moment

Fun little puzzle game, atmosphere is great. If you have some time to kill, I definitely recommend this

The line of sight of people felt a bit strange. I could stand next to them and they wouldn’t “see” me only if they turned around, but the game mechanic itself is cool.

Looking forward to the full game with hopefully more story and more of this great atmosphere.

I missed wasd control, don’t like arrow keys. But luckily there is controller support

This is a wonderfully imaginative mini-puzzle game that demands quick reflexes and a keen eye! It also got me coming back time and time again to try and beat my previous time (I managed to sneak under the 4-minute mark and then decided that was probably the best I was gonna manage!)

Trying to find every little second you can save and exploit every little corner-cutting technique you can makes this much more replayable than you may think!

Getting the chance to play this little gem for free has really brightened up an otherwise slow and steady Monday!

Rogue Contracts: Syndicate

Rogue Contracts: Syndicate

Nice concept with a cyberninja soundtrack. However it’s poorly optimized and with no settings to tweak in game it makes for a frustrating experience when the frames drop as you die extremely easy by just one shot. Can not recommend it to anyone who wants to say sane.

I should have give this game a thumbs up, but i’ve change my mind, I’m all for it for supporting any indie developers for making a good game on steam.

This game is definitely a hotline miami clone, has a believable story, good level design.

what letting me down was the movement of the character is not elastic enough unlike the hotline miami is a fast paced action but this one is kinda slow to attack also like moving my character here and there. I’m wondering how to be tactical in this game if its not that fast and quick on killing the enemy. the enemy AI isnt that great either.

Serial Cleaner

Serial Cleaner

Ever since the movies Nikita and Curdled , we all (well, movie fans) know what a so-called ‘cleaner’ does: cleans up the crime scene after a messy killing.

In Serial Cleaner we play as one such person, however, unlike in the previously mentioned movies, our protagonist is a freelance cleaner, avoiding all forms of violence (but we never learn how he got into this ‘business’). And since he always arrives to the scenes after the cops do, he must use stealth in order to clean up the blood, make the bodies disappear and destroy all evidence throughout the 20 (+ movie inspired bonus) contracts/levels this game has to offer.

Xenomare

Xenomare

Xenomare is a fun little Survival Horror Roguelike it very hard and I died a lot. In this game, you have to search for items and do the task then leave. This is all done well having to avoid and hide from the enemy. There are a few maps and difficulties. I was mostly playing on easy and was still dying a lot. This game does have a big problem with the full screen being off the screen to the bottom right. I fixed this by using a program called Borderless Gaming. Overall, I recommend giving this a try if you like Survival Horror games and afford to spend $8 if not you can wait for a sale. Just know this game is still an Early Access Game so the dev is still working on it.

Broken Blades

Broken Blades

Broken Blades is extraordinary, so many unexpected alternatives and creativity.

The game is a blast and I’m happy playing it and having it in my library !

Suggestions :

  • I always had the shield bar empty. I finished the game and no vendor I found, offered shields.

  • A tad too hard, and I found no save points.

  • An ingame map would increase the allure so much :

I progressed going around and around till finding new areas by luck and perseverance.

Thought the game was short and over at times, but instead, it is so big.

I found difficulty too harsh you die way too easy not fun when everything in the game is stronger than you. Is there a check point in this game don’t know can’t seem to progress really mixed on this one.
