Kraken Smash: Volleyball

Kraken Smash: Volleyball

I love this game! It’s got the right amount of competitiveness to keep it fun and ongoing. If you like Lethal League, you’ll love playing this game with friends.

I’d love to see some sort of mini game for solo to act as a sort of tutorial but also something that allows a single player to enjoy the game more when playing by themselves. The bot is a little hard but I feel like it being hard really teaches you how to play and get better.

The only thing that truly bothers me is the specific, animated orange background that’s extremely distracting towards the bottom. It’s still playable, but it’s too similar to the ball color when it reaches the second hit. Other than that, I haven’t run into any other issues yet!

Fantasy Ball

Fantasy Ball

A great game to pick up and play with your friends.

This is not a game you’ll pass your life playing, grinding for levels or items, but it does its job : Animate your party with your friends. You miss the feeling you had in Mario kart 64 when beating the sh*t out of your friends or being mad because one of them stole the show? Then is game is for you :)

Careful tho' : This is local multiplayer, so no online, even if you can fix that by playing with Parsec.

Welcome to an energetic family-friendly multiplayer couch potato game that contains a nice selection of game modes capable of providing hours of entertainment. Grab some friends and prepare yourself for a furious battle to be boss of the arena. Its fantasy-based theme is cute and it’s fun to play the various maps with their different themes. It has a nice assortment of arenas and modes to choose from as well as the class modifiers giving the title a wide range of options to keep the game fun trying out different combinations. You can play with two to four players (there is no single-player for the title). With free-for-all, teams, or cooperative mode giving many options to enjoy.

Nippon Marathon

Nippon Marathon

I´ll put it simple:

This might very well be the SURPRISE of 2018 and in my book is already a part of the Hall of Games of Couch Games alongside Towerfall and Duck Game.

Picture Micro Machines mechanics, except the mini cars are replaced by normal sized people that are not QUITE normal, like an old transvestite o an anthropomorphic dog (that somehow has become the new face of Indie Games in this book of mine I’m telling you about) ALL while competing to reach the Top in a obstacle course race in contemporary Japan.

Nippon Marathon is funny, wacky, strange, surreal, goofy, and everything you expected it to be if you have seen those funny, wacky, strange, surreal, and goofy Japanese TV shows that have a surprising number of international followers all over the globe. The game is currently in Early Access but will be coming out to full release in approximately 1 month, when the more fleshed out version of the game will be available to the public on multiple platforms.

good local player fun. felt nice and old school at times. some really solid events, some less so. agree that it would be nice to see a couple more events make it into the game. paid full price $17.49 CDN… and while that may be a bit high normally, it hit the mark for the crew that played it for the session that we did. if that makes sense. in other words, we had a lot of fun.

and we’ll be playing it again.

i recommend.

and really, i’ve paid more for a double at an airport bar… and that cocktail was much more fleeting…

Fantastic local multiplayer game (with steam remote play. if you haven’t used it before, check it out) all the minigames are really fun, and the bots provide a good challenge. You can always turn the bots off if you find it too difficult though, and just play with friends.

If you’re looking for a game you and quickly pick up and play with friends, this is it! I’m not sure I would pay full price for it, but 100% worth grabbing on sale! Really hope it get’s an expansion or something, though I’m sure since the game is 3 years old now it probably won’t. Regardless, worth it!

River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~

River City Super Sports Challenge ~All Stars Special~

This game (originally released for the PlayStation 3) is a remake of Downtown Nekketsu Kōshinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundōkai, a hilarious and extremely popular Famicom game that is part of the Kunio-kun series. The game was also ported to the Game Boy and had a 3D re-imagining on the Nintendo DS. Though this remake doesn’t include some of the additions from those ports, the game makes up for it with a whole lot of substance: more teams, more characters, more techniques, character creation, team creation, stage creation, a robust single player mode and online play. The game has plenty of fan service for fans and players of previous Kunio-kun games.

A little history on this game for those that didn’t know or were too lazy to look up what this game is and was.

So first off: this game is a remake. This game is a revisioned version of what was orginally called in Japan: “Downtown - Nekketsu Koushin Kyoku Soreyuke Daiundokai” that’s originally from the NES. Like, this is a DIRECT remake. Almost everything is the same except it’s more expanded in terms of story, gameplay, and presentation. So this english name we got for the game is actually a reused name from a Nintendo DS title. Same function, a remake of the above, but overhauled most of the game. The DS title mentioned above is the first time America got its hands on it. The NES version has NEVER gotten a American release. So color me suprised that Arc systems did this again (as they were ones who did the DS version)

Soccertron

Soccertron

Soccertron is a competitive sports game in which you either play vs. bots or play against (or with) up to 3 other players (locally).

There are 5 different types of rounds (game modes) which have some similarities with real sporst like; Basketball, Volleyball and football (No, I won’t call it ‘soccer’!).

The gameplay is fun and works nicely but a controller is highly recommended.

The main problem with the game is that it’s very minimalistic. There simply isn’t anything to keep you entertained in the long run.

Real player with 12.1 hrs in game

This seemingly primitive multiplayer entertainment managed to surprise me - it turned out to be a cute singleplayer fun as well! If you remember DOS times you might recall the game ‘Arcade Volleyball’ (1987) which was very popular as a casual time killer. ‘Soccertron’ is obviously a creative developement of that idea - several ‘sports’ added along with modern physics engine and neon graphics. Bots are smart and persistent, tricky situations arise every second and after you get used to character motion (much more sophistiicated than predecessor’s) and controls the emotions flow like a river!

This game is worth buying, since it is recommended for people sitting on the same couch.

Simple gameplays, difficult to master, high replayability,

and you can also express your victory celebration right in front of your friends' faces.

Feels awesome! (If you use twin USB controller gamepads, read further below)

For players utilizing twin USB controller gamepads:

1. Install an app called “x360ce” for 32bit games (free software) in the game’s folder.

2. Plug the gamepads to the USB port

3. Open the app and make sure the gamepads are detected.

An amazing collection of local multiplayer games. I’ve been playing these games with friends and at public events for over a year and they’re a crowd favourite every time. Each of the games is easy enough to pick up from watching a match or two but are deceptively complex and very competitive. JS Joust has some unusual requirements in order to play (2-7 PS Move controllers and a large-ish room to play in), but the effort is definately worth it. Joust is the most memorable and universally enjoyable party game I’ve ever hosted. Even the two secret games are hilarious fun once you figure out how to unlock them (you’ll have to figure this one out by yourself).
