Rockjack

Yes! Any fan of asteroids will like this one. You can collect pill pick ups that increase your fire, sheilds, tone down rock behavior, and more I haven’t discovered yet. Nice flashy explosions and there is more to this game than meets the eye. Game is actually FUN to play and look forward to entering the rock swarm and getting to know jack, because I don’t know jack yet. cheers!

Really fun game!! The game mechanics are super smooth, and it gets surprisingly challenging. I still haven’t passed level 3! The game feels very well polished, for example, the retrograde thruster has less thrust available than the main thruster, and the damage to your ship / your health is reflected in a circle (and the ship has directional damage)! It would be cool if you could land on an asteroid, although that wouldn’t follow the original Asteroids arcade game :) I’m just a big fan of Lunar Lander..

A very lovely old real-time strategy game. Looks great (well, you may need to play around in the dosbox .conf file to get it to look great on modern machines – see the community hub discussions – but it’s well worth it :P) and the gameplay is lots of fun. The game’s designers obviously put a lot of attention to detail into this title, and it shows. There’s tons to do, and the game can get quite hectic and fast-paced, depending on the settings you choose. Reading the in-game “fluff” during the quieter moments shows that quite a lot of thought went into the world-building, too, which isn’t a big deal in itself, but just goes to confirm again that this game was a labour of love. It has the odd bug and design flaw, but it’s also more than the sum of its parts, and provides a joyful and very positive experience to any strategy fan. Plays a little bit like a mix of Sim City and Master of Orion; however, this game has a quite unique feel and style to it, so it is a bit difficult to directly compare to any other major title. If you’re a fan of classic strategy games, I’d say this one is definitely worth a try. I have lots of happy memories of this game – and thanks to this Steam release I’m still having lots of fun playing it now!

An excellent Base Building RTS, nothing like it has ever been made, at least I don’t think there has. If you have trouble with DOSBOX, you can tweak the Dosbox config file in the game files under steamapps, by changing the number of cycles to 70000, so that Cycles=70000, cos sometimes you get stack overflow errors crashing you out to windows. Also you can tweak the resolution in the same file, by changing output to opengl (output=opengl) or setting the resolution to desktop…and so on.

A bit about gameplay. If you annoy your neighbours, by placing spy satellites around their asteroids, they will discover them and attack you. So it behooves you to build your asteroid’s defences, and invest in ScitTech blueprints for better weapons and defences. Also, getting blueprints for better ships is also important. The more ore you sell to the Corporation the better, so colonise as many asteroids as possible, but remember to use gravity nullifiers and asteroid engines on them, so they don’t collide with one another.

REVO

REVO

REVO brings back vibes I have not felt since the late 80s and early 90s.

This is a fantastic space shooter! If you liked games like Galaga back in your day, then this game is for you.

-Shoot up space ships of varying styles and difficulties

-Unlock new weapons by defeating bosses

-Earn tech points to gain more lives

-Gain ammo by killing enemies

-Conserve Ammo because you can run out of it (If this happens there is an ammo supply drop)

-Beat the game and unlock hard mode.

-Fantastic Soundtrack

When I was 11 my uncle had a Galaga machine in his basement. I spent a whole summer trying to beat my Dad’s high score. I’m a professional streamer now, but that is one of my most cherished gamer memories. Revo takes me back to that summer. It’s the first game since geometry wars to capture that feeling. My Dad would have loved this game and when I play it I feel like I’m still trying to beat his Galaga score. That really means a lot to me.

Nice twin stick shooter, with different map types. good although short sound track. tries to have rogue lite elements like ship upgrades, and while they are cool, i was able to unlock all of them right away (with the exception of 1 tier3 unlock). it almost feels as if those unlocks should just be like PowerUp drops during the game. but overall so far i have had a #Funtime

Great game; this game gets more and more dynamic as you progress through the levels. It can get quite intense but the relaxing sound-track adds a nice balance. It seems to be well optimized for PC because it runs smooth and takes little storage. My favorite level so far is 10; maneuvering around the asteroids is good fun and makes a great scenery. I look forward to exploring the rest of the levels and arcade mode.

Brilliant wee game!

The progression is done really well. New enemies and abilities are dealt to you at a nice pace and the ways to counter them are intuitive. The game brings in new situations and changes dynamics with each new chapter, which keeps it fresh and builds upon your existing knowledge. It has a really unique concept I haven’t seen in any game before with the Kaleidoscope but still has a really retro feel. Like arcade games of old!

Plus the soundtrack is amazing, not distracting but really sets the mood and keeps you in the zone!

Galencia

Galencia

Sometimes, when the world is complex and overwhelming, you need something simple and pure to help restore some balance. Galencia, programmed and designed by Jason Aldred, is the perfect game for this. Fun, addictive and built on a classic formula, Galencia also holds plenty of surprises to keep things interesting. The art is attractive and sharp and the music and sound truly enhance the experience playing this great game that’s full of exciting, perfectly-paced, blasting action.

The fact that this has all been written for the venerable C64 and is now available to play via Steam in a C64 emulator is itself a small miracle that you need to witness for yourself immediately.

Intro

So great to actually see a genuine C64 game and not the imitation retro that usually comes to steam so for that alone this game has credit. Galencia in it’s purest form is a Galaxians variant and is very reminiscent of early C64 games from 1982 to 1984 period.

Graphics

The design and colour for the graphics are spot on for the C64 as the C64 was known for more blocky graphics and extended use of dull colours and lots of brown, sprites are well designed and defined and most gamers today don’t realise that we didn’t actually have many animated sprites but rather used movement as a way to trick you so it was an illusional effect and worked well and it’s the same in Galencia too so that’s great.

JETBOY

JETBOY

Saw this on the new releases page for 5$ and said “why not”

Turns out it was a pretty good decision.

It’s a very simple game. Each level has basically the same objective. Bring back a set number of collectibles to the ship and then leave. Each level provides you with a weapon you also have to collect as it spawns randomly in the level most of the time. All of this to some pretty decent tunes.

You have a jetpack with fuel that replenishes slowly when on the ground and 3 hit points.

There are a few power up and gimmicks like a flying surfboard that has a flamethrower, a space worm that grows longer when it eats enemies or a UFO firing missiles for example. Those you can use yourself once you’ve killed the current owner

Amazing game. Given key for the game to try out and so grateful for it. This game has great music and also really amazing level designs. Perfect retro style game. 10-10 Will be posting content for the game on my youtube channel and social media. Check out The_casualgam3r on Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and Twitch.

Authentic small two-color point-and-click adventure game in retro 80s style.

This game can be a real gem for you if you value minimalism and retro atmosphere with a non-linear sci-fi adventure with less graphics and more story.

Real player with 355.2 hrs in game

spacenet is a retro-style sci-fi point & click that gave me asteroids, elite and similar vibes, but there’s no combat, resource management (except money, see below) or anything like that here, just you in your spaceship wandering around, talking, puzzling and hacking in a non-linear fashion.

CMYW

CMYW

CMYW is way too addicting. Totally worth the $!

PROS:

-Quick playing and easy to understand

-The leaderboard is a great motivator

-The physics behind all the movements is impressive. The more ores you pick up, the slower your ship propels until it’s emptied at the portal. The more powerful the gun, the stronger the kickback (so be careful…you’re not invincible!). It took a while to get used to the ship’s motion, kind of like flying drunk, but once you get used to it it’s awesome! The game features all balance each other nicely :)

If only we can have more Atari-like games on Steam!

Pros:

-Objective: Its the classic Atari game Asteroids, now with enemies to keep you on your toes and resource collection to further increase your high score.

-Graphics: Kick @$$ Especially when the nukes go off or you lose your portal.

-Music and Sound Effects: Feels like this is a game from back in the day.

-Controls: Fluid. Much simpler when compared to original Asteroids.

-Co-op: New major feature added to the original concept.

Cons:

-Co-op: Feature is local only.

Iridion 3D

Iridion 3D

I purchased this game merely due to nostalgia for arcade super scrollers like galaxy force 2 and it turned out to be a pretty fun game, but warning for potential buyers is that this is a straight up GBA port with nothing new added and looks kind of blurry all blow up on a big screen. One more knock against the game is the fact there is no ability to save and you have to rely on passwords. The game still is a fun arcade shooter, but don’t expect anything close to a remaster.

Real player with 3.4 hrs in game

I honestly never expected to see this game on steam. Iridion 3D is one of my favorite games of all time. The game is a launch title for the Game Boy Advance, which is something to keep in mind about this game. The game uses a pseudo 3D effect in order to create a unique Shmup game that i have never seen an attempt to replicate the style of. While the pseudo 3D style can be very akward at first, if you are able to adapt, the game is a very fun, while short game. While some may feel the fact the game is short is a flaw, i find it adds to the ease of picking up the game for a quick playthrough. As a launch title for the GBA, the game has some audio oddities, along with issues due to developers still learning the limitations of the platform. all in all, if you can get past the flaws and get used to the pseudo 3D style, it is a very fun game.
