ABOUT THIS GAME

Occupy Mars is a highly technical, open-world sandbox game about Mars colonization inspired by the most promising technologies and companies that are working toward becoming a multi-planet species. Build and upgrade your base, discover new amazing regions, conduct mining operations, retrieve water, generate oxygen, grow crops, fix broken parts, and learn how to survive on Mars!

Have you ever dreamt about visiting Mars? We always do! There are so many things to see and discover on the red planet, so many exciting technologies to be created, and so many challenges to overcome! If humanity can do this, we can become a multi-planet civilization!

Build and upgrade your base. Make sure that there is enough water, oxygen, power, and food to survive.

Build greenhouses, oxygen tanks, fuel generators, connect all the pipes and cables, and remember about proper cable management. Grow your own food.

Fix broken parts using realistic electronic components and tools. Learn the basics soldering, using hot air, electronic measurement tools, and all the details necessary to fix your equipment.

Explore different regions of Mars while searching for valuable resources, discover mining sites, and find the best place to build a city.

Remember that you need to find a relatively leveled area with good access to underground water in a place where temperatures don’t drop too much during the night.

Experience an open-world sandbox game with a realistic day/night cycle and overcome real challenges that colonists face. Build solar arrays and batteries for energy storage, upgrade them, and find the optimal way to power your colony.

Upgrade your vehicles and equipment in your garage. Organize your workshop and modify your rover. Change crane hydraulics, operate the robotic arm, dig for valuable resources, build mining rigs, and more…

Occupying Mars is not always easy. Sometimes things will explode, break or not go exactly as planned. Learn to cope with “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.” Sometimes you have to really act quickly before you run out of air, food, or energy.

…but most importantly HAVE FUN on Mars!

Solar Baron

Solar Baron

Solar Baron is a real-time tycoon resource management and logistics game. The game is set in a seamless, randomly-generated solar system with a range of resources to gather, pump and mine for maximum profit.

The world faces a resource shortage. In desperation, the world government has privatized the under-performing global space agency in the hope that profit-driven individuals will find a way to tap the vast amount of resources available on other worlds and deliver them back home.

You are one such profit-driven individual.

LIFE-SIZED SOLAR SYSTEM

Solar Baron features a vast, life-sized solar system of procedurally generated planets and moons. You’ll need to solve the logistical challenges associated with transporting tons of valuable resources across billions of kilometers of space by constructing a network of strategically-placed orbital and surface depots.

SPACECRAFT AND SPACEPORT DESIGN

Research new technologies and design spacecraft capable of carrying out specific missions. With a range of available engines, fuel types, and other components, you will be challenged with designing spacecraft that strike a balance between maintenance requirements, production time, mass and – of course – cost.

Design spaceports from a range of modules to serve as fuel depots, research stations, tourist destinations or any combination of these. Just remember that each module must be launched into orbit, so design with caution.

ORBITAL MECHANICS AND MISSION PLANNING

Solar Baron simulates realistic orbital mechanics as well as real-world orbital maneuvers. However, you don’t need to figure out the gritty details yourself – you pay people to do that for you. The game features a streamlined mission design system, which will calculate every detail of a spacecraft’s mission from a list of actions to perform created by the player. This leaves you to do more important things: creating a strategy, setting goals, planning missions and watching the bottom line.

The advertisement videos shows gameplay that isn’t consistent with the actual choices/options/theme of the game. Buyer beware. Other than that, it’s a simplistic wanna-be “FTL”, but its not. It could be good for small children who just barely know how to read. In fact, it should come with an expected player age of 7 years old. This isn’t insult or malice, I just think that the target audience should be an upfront aspect shown to the buyer.

Real player with 18.5 hrs in game

This is a neat game. It combines some travel elements of FTL with combat similar to a pared-down Gratuitous Space Battles. There’s some resource management, cardplay to influence battles, and satisfying meta-progression. It’s worth checking out

A Long Journey to an Uncertain End

A Long Journey to an Uncertain End

Not looking good, Captain. That holo-influencer you sent Matias to guard has been “upstaged”. Putting a former drag queen before every camera in the verse? Not the best idea. And the anti-sentience rally we sent Aylah to… that’s a riot now. Not saying it’s entirely her fault the audio drones were hacked but, you know. Probably didn’t help.

On top of that Truly and Denny are nowhere to be found. Any chance of keeping a low profile is out the airlock. Now there’s an incoming message from… your ex?

All in all, a quieter day than most.

A Long Journey to an Uncertain End is a narrative focused Space Opera that’ll have you flying around the universe assembling an unruly crew from an eclectic cast of characters and taking any job you can to keep one step ahead of your abusive Ex. The twist: you’re not just piloting a ship… you are the ship.

Supplies don’t come for free in the verse, doubly so for outlawed sentient spaceships. Every planet, moon and space station is a valuable source of jobs and their precious rewards. Assign crew tasks based on their skills, and help their decisions along the way. If everything pays off you’ll have what you need to escape, and if not…well, you can call in those favors you’ve been saving.

A Long Journey to an Uncertain End presents a unique vision of the future, a universe of inclusivity and diversity tainted by uncertainty and fear. Build a family within your crew. Every crew member has their own story, every planet its own history, and even your own adventure remains unfinished.

Sentient ships have been outlawed for centuries. With the help of your holo-companion C.O.R.G.I. and your (mostly) loyal crew, you managed to evade capture. Now there’s an entire galaxy between you and freedom.

So…where to next, Captain?

Features:

  • Fly across a unique galaxy, from the dust-bitten badlands of the Rim, to the techno-industrial megacities of the Core…and Beyond.

  • Recruit an eclectic crew from a diverse cast of characters with their own stories and varied skill sets.

  • Explore planets, moons and space stations as you put distance between you and your abusive ex. Match your crew to jobs and decide their actions along the way. If all else fails, you can always rely on a favor or two.

  • Manage your resources to keep your crew happy. Boosting between worlds can take its toll, as can failing at jobs. A happy crew is a productive crew… most of the time.

Derelict Void

Derelict Void

If there’s one thing that makes you keep coming back to a game, it’s the perfect balance between ease of progression and the odd moment where all hell breaks loose and you gotta strive to survive. That’s exactly what Derelict Void is!

PROS

Good graphics and animations

Not too much clutter on the screen

Lots of choices and you know that you’re either going to die a valiant death or live to see another day

Learning curve is rewarding (more often than not)

The hydroponics area has some good stuff in it wink

Real player with 26.4 hrs in game

Derelict Void is certainly a game that will likely draw comparison to a variety of other titles. The game is apparently inspired by Frostpunk - though in my mind one could likely also see some draw for this game from the likes of Out There: Omega Edition for the emphasis on collection of resources and technologies, Cultist Simulator for its mix of real-time with pause turn based gameplay, and of course FTL: Faster Than Light for text based events. Chief to all these games though is that is all about survival in a hostile environment.

Dyson Sphere Program

Dyson Sphere Program

Easily my game of the year. In my decades of gaming, never have I encountered a game this satisfying.

It’s basically Factorio in space, but there are 2 major differences: the end goal, and the visuals.

In Factorio, your goal is to launch a rocket.

In DSP, it’s to plan and build your very own fully customizable Dyson sphere.

Factorio’s moment-to-moment gameplay is a bit more engaging and interesting, but as soon as you put your first solar sail into orbit around your home star, you’ll know this game is something special.

Real player with 649.4 hrs in game

Pros:

  • Visually stunning

  • Straightforward tech & production graph

  • Planets

  • Strip mining planets

  • Good early to mid game performance

  • Feels more accessible than Factorio or Satisfactory

  • Modding (can help with the cons below)

Cons:

  • Late game performance and file sizes can become horrible

  • Tedious editing of the titular Dyson Sphere

  • Boring and repetitive placing of mining equipment and factories late game

  • Not much replay value beyond going for certain achievements

  • Late game is practically waiting for hours for research/mining/achievement progress

It’s rare for a city builder / logistics game to have a good story, but this one sure does. Through monologue and dialogue options we follow the self-discovery and existential ruminations of the player character, an AI tasked with terraforming Mars. The planet visuals are beautiful. It’s incredible to zoom in and look at the contoured terrain and watch it change as it fills in with water and plant life.

Gameplay is less elaborate than most city builders and the logistics are not even close to the level of complexity of something like a Factorio style game. Managing the interconnected temperature and atmospheric composition is interesting. The end result is a casual, relaxing builder with a memorable story.

===SUMMARY===

This is my favorite game of 2021. I like simulation games as a group, and this is a beautiful installment of this growing genera. I love what simulations teach me, being spoon fed facts off a list. I love that (having played Per Aspera) I know the landscape of Mars better. I know some of the names, sure, but grokking the SCALE, the oddness, sparking my curiosity about Noctis Labyrinthus, just from working on the planet is priceless. I became familiar with Mars in a way that Surviving Mars never did (though I played that a lot too).
