Space Fox Kimi

Space Fox Kimi

Fun little JRPG in a futuristic setting with some entertaining features like the ship to ship combat, skills tied to your weapon, different solutions for some of the quests and more. In case you are worried when you see some anthropomorphic girls in a JRPG from a dev that sounds Asion, that this is another one of “those games”, I can put your mind at ease: This is family friendly game made by a Canadian company. Highly recommended, even at full price.

***Before beginning, I would like to give a special thanks to my brother, Cold Dingo [33rd], for proofing this lengthy review so early in the morning when I am certain he would have preferred sleep. Your selflessness was not overlooked.

Creatio Ex Nihilo: Aition-literally translated from Latin as, “creation from nothing: cause”-is a turn-based strategy roleplaying title depicting the inception of the universe from a being known as Uros. As an avid fanatic of Dungeons & Dragons, this title struck my interest considering much of the former lore from the tabletop game stemmed from Greek mythology as does CEN:A. Even though the concept of this project is intriguing, the execution does appear to lack polish.

Deafening silence in the deep darkness of space.

The Magna 6 system is home to the most advanced weapons lab the universe has ever known. Two months ago, communications with the orbiting facility mysteriously went dead without any warning. If the cutting edge weapons in the station were to fall into the wrong hands, the results would be cataclysmic. Knowing that quick action is necessary, but unaware of what terrors might have caused the break in communication, you are called in to lead a small team of brave but expendable explorers through the imperiled space station with a mission to ascertain the fate of its crew.

Krisalis Software and Teque London’s gripping isometric squad-based sci-fi action RPG follows your team of four explorers as they trek through the dark environments of the Weapons Research Facility to uncover the mystery of what went wrong. Each member of the team is chosen by the player based on their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their personality and individual history. As the leader of the unit, you have full control over the inventories and actions of your squad, even down to deciding when to use headlamps to illuminate the darkness. But watch out – the inky blackness of space hides friend and foe alike.

  • Traverse the dimly lit corridors of the Weapons Research Facility and beam down to the planet surface for terrestrial excursions.

  • Craft weapons by combining interchangeable items found on your mission and use them to battle against hostile defense robots and other menacing threats.

  • Marvel at the real-time dynamic lighting powered by impressive Super Photoscaping lighting techniques. Watch lamps and explosions cast lights and shadows on the environment, and use your squad’s headlamps to illuminate puzzles along your route.

  • Take full control of your team of explorers as you manage their inventories, guide their individual actions, and keep tabs on their life-giving fluid levels.

I bought this game last night, it was cheaper than my takeaway. I ate the takeaway whilst it downloaded. I have only three hours on record as I write this - I cleared the first section, that I might call the prologue, or tutorial, (It’s not just a tutorial it’s real content) - and I had just gotten into the next part of the game. To say I’m excited is an understatement. Maybe it’s just the right match for my peculiar tastes or whatever, I don’t know, but I enjoyed very much the first introductory, prologue like, tutorial-like bit of the game. I’m really not paying much interest in work today and am just trying to get as much info from the dev twitter, this forum, etc. A game’s not captured my imagination and enthusiasm like this for a long while.

This is how old school gaming used to be.

You had to play the game, and “do your time”.

So far, my time has been well spent. The game is rough yes, but it’s ample for what the game is trying to achieve. Here is what that achievement is:

Pack all them goodies off of them table top RPG’s we played in the 90’s, and make them appear on the screen. If you want what a “vintage style 90’s tabletop game” feels like on the screen, play it.

So them smart dev’s did just that.

Yes, it can be frustrating testing new software, sending feedback with the right intention is difficult, especially since there is no macro coded yet with the “insta help section”. Play the game for a bit, and stumble around in it. I followed the tutorial, and decided that fun is what we as the gamer make the game.

Ancient Frontier

Ancient Frontier

The voice acting and storyline start off really really bad. But like a fungus it grows on you and now I’m quite liking it. I had originally complained of it being awful, but a few missions in, the dialogue between missions starts making sense in the style it’s presented and after a while it comes into it’s own and you start to appreciate these characters making the journey with you.

Botom line it’s pretty fun. There’s plenty of RPG elements, battle damage and mission consequences carry over from one mission to the next and there’s a nice tech tree and progression for all things from ships to ship components to crew. I’m enjoying the ways I can use a few ships with tech and crew or just a large fleet to go about my missions. There’s a lot of random elements that can happen so there’s replayability too. You can go about the campaign mission a second time using different ships, techs and strategies and there looks to be a few unique mission choices that you can do differently.

Turn-based tactical goodness… in SPACE!

For a game out of nowhere, Ancient Frontier offered me a highly pleasant surprise. Good turn-based tactical games are not overly abundant to start with, so I decided to bite the bullet and buy on a whim. Something I rarely do, but boy am I glad to have done so.

The game is all about the tactical missions. There are two main campaigns, which apparnetly can take around 100 hours to play through. No multiplayer or skirmish mode.

Missions bring you varying quantity of one of the three main resources (“material,” “fuel,” and “research”). The first allows is used to buy new ships or components and repair battle damage. Aside from being required as well to purchase new ships, the second resource is an all-important balancing mechanism. Since each ship class (and modifier components) alter the cost of deployment for each mission. Take too many expensive ships too often on missions, and you will run out… which will probably end your playthrough. The last allows investing in upgrades to each ship class, or to research new and more efficient modifier components.

I enjoyed playing this game with friends, the idea it’s really cool. I really liked the different kinds of powers each player has to use to advance through the maps.

Sometimes we didn’t know how to advance because in some of the missions there isn’t a clear path to follow.

In overall, the game has a lot of potential and I am looking forward to new updates.

Developed and published by ROLLDBOX GAMES, Those Who Came is an Early Access game which in its current state cannot be recommended. its claims to be an RPG but reality it plays as platformer with puzzle elements.

Whilst I commend and support the concept of a cooperative non-combat-based game its implementation leaves much to be desired, before I continue I will disclose I received the key for free after been approached by ROLLDBOX GAMES.

I actually declined the key initially due to the games multiplayer focus and my own limited schedule causing me to be uncertain if I could film a feedback video but after receiving a key regardless and then four further email reminders when I didn’t use the key I finally found time to experiment with the games Early Access.

STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ II - The Sith Lords™

Good game but there’s a game breaking bug that I cannot find a fix for. I Tried around 6 different fixes to no avail. After combat, around 80% of the time, the game will not allow the player to move. You are stuck unless you save and then load. If it happened 20% instead of 80% it wouldn’t be a problem, but as it stands, at times it’s every 20 seconds you have to spend another 20 seconds to restart.
