Saturn Quest: Shadow of Planetus

Saturn Quest: Shadow of Planetus

Arkhouse makes very strange games that tend to be as unique as they are confusing, but they are also very rewarding if you manage to find the patience and push through them. This game has a ‘boss rush’ and ‘bullet hell’ aspect to it, however, it is a multigenre game that incorporates some occasional platforming, space shooting, and top-down exploration, not to mention the signature ‘WTF Arkhouse narrative’. That being said, every time I play a game by Arkhouse it’s a steep learning curve as the games never work exactly as one would expect. I have been somewhat harsh on the developer in the past, but not because I did not enjoy the games - if anything I wish they were a bit more accessible to the general public. Compared to previous titles like Mirage of Dragon, Saturn Quest is not too difficult to navigate as long as you not skipping the dialogue. Arkhouse games tend to have hidden passages so you need to read the dialogue for the hints or you going to be running around the map completely clueless.

This game has two new features not in the previous games in the series. Puzzles now have up to 800 pieces. Also there is an option to rotate the pieces the right way up. Luckily you can turn this feature off if the puzzles get too difficult. It’s a shame that Steam doesn’t give Achievements for each individual puzzle like in the Cities and Monuments games though. I hope there will be more jigsaw games in the future. I think a wildlife theme would be a good idea.

This game is great fun! For anyone who is into arcade style score chasers, this is a must have! At 1$, this is a total bargain. It is repetitive, but, somehow, that isn’t really a negative with this game. It really works with it. It is light-hearted from the art style, to the music. Lots of fun and a good way to just jump into a game and unwind.

This game is a mix of space shooter and memory game. You need to memorize the correct sequence of ships based on it’s color. Destroy them and earn many points as possible. You can also earn points by playing as a normal space shooter but you will get less points than destroying the enemies following the correct sequence.

Controls feel very solid, pixelart is nice. The sound track is very good.

Little Lost Robots

Little Lost Robots

Little Lost Robots is the alternative to an IQ test game. There are 2 modes to complete the puzzles in order to get 3 stars. The least number of moves and the fastest times to get the robots home. Although the fastest times solution has already been pre-determined, the optimum amount of moves are player determined! So the best solution for this game…may still come from you! I can’t believe such a simple game could have me hooked for hours just to get the best solution. I thought I was smart until this game came along. And my IQ is 152…apparently not high enough for this game.

Little Lost Robots takes simple mechanics and put them together in a way that lets you find a solution to the puzzle at hand. As you get further into the game, more pieces of the puzzle should be taken into account, like when you should be melting/freezing ice blocks, robot collisions (you’ll be experiencing a lot of this in particular) and so on and so forth.

After that, it’s a matter of whether you want to make your solution as efficient as possible - and that itself is quite the different ballpark as now you’re trying to use less moves and commands (as if figuring out a solution by its own isn’t enough). A good puzzle game overall, although skipping levels isn’t a thing (in case of frustration), it means that if you’re stuck, you’re gonna be stuck on that particular level until you’ve got your “eureka moment”.

BLACKHOLE

BLACKHOLE

Not for the faint of heart. Blackhole ranks among the most challenging and rewarding puzzle platformers I have ever played.

This is one of the few indie games with a depth of play on par with classics from the SNES era. If you’re like me and you made a beeline for the Special Zone on each replay of Super Mario World, then Blackhole is the game for you.

The gameplay provides unique twists on the genre, primarily through the use of gravity platforms that rotate the screen. Each world was clearly designed with care in order to require thoughtful navigation by the player to reach full completion. Although fully completing each level by collecting all of the ‘selfburns’ can be time consuming (and sometimes frustrating), only one selfburn needs to be obtained to move on to the next level. The open-ended world construction allows return to previous stages at any time, which permits a first-time player to focus on the primary storyline without being bogged down in finding all secrets in sequence.

Holy heckin' heck, this game is insane.

I’ve seen some gameplay of this monstrosity, but you don’t know how this game really is until you’ve played it for yourself.

Pros:

  • puzzles that actually feel like puzzles

  • great visuals

  • enjoyable and interesting story

  • awesome OST

Cons:

  • (very) difficult puzzles and platforming

  • the correct way to finish the puzzles can feel like exploiting

  • the controls can betray you sometimes (played on PC)

This game starts with a somewhat easy start that will teach you the basics, however this easy start will quickly turn into levels that will take your quite some time to figure out yourself, and even if you know the solution, (either through youtube or by yourself) it can take a long time to finish it just because of the difficulty of certain jumps.

No more need to search the bag of your vacuum-cleaner for the missing parts of your puzzle.

No more need to clean the living room table because it’s time for some coffee.

No more need to chase your parrot because it also wants to play.

Nice puzzle game. Better in some ways than the Pixel Puzzles series. (Specifically, the fact that the puzzle pieces snap together outside the picture frame.) Decent for the price (especially if on discount).

I like old-style games, so I decided to buy this game, as it reminded me of the games of my childhood, well, let’s start with the pros of the game:

  • You need to think through your steps to be successful in this game

  • Intuitive interface, looks good

Disadvantages of the game:

I don’t really like the graphics, I think it looks too old, I’ve seen a few old-style games, but they used the new game development technologies, they looked very good and enticing

This is an excellent Defender clone with quite a bit more added to the original game-play. You have the ability to transform your ship into a slower-moving but faster firing warrior mode. And there are whole bunch of new enemy types to contend with. one of the nicest features in the game is the ability to change the game speed to suit your level of play.

Keep up the great work Hijong!
