It has potential.

I’d like to see Keyboard control. Left and Right arrows to rotate clockwise/counter, Up arrow to move forward.

This game has a lot of potential with its charming 16-bit style and almost endless customization with ship type, weapons and much more that actually have impact on the gameplay and your success.

My only wishes as for now is keyboard support and a soundtrack

STAR WARS™ - X-Wing Special Edition

STAR WARS™ - X-Wing Special Edition

Dudes, ok, look at my game time playing this. That’s the amount of time it took for me to get through it all from the beginning completing all missions, all tours, and even the proving grounds. I’ve been playing games for a minute now…and by a minute, I mean 35 years, and this is the most difficult PC game that I’ve ever played. It’s no joke. It’s rage-inducingly difficult at times. I’m all glad that I played through it especially considering the historical value and the fact that I missed it the first go around. Wow that game took a long time to finish! But, it’s kind of cool…the first game to really add to the star wars universe by creating new plots. Pretty cool, huh? But, basically, to complete it, you have to basically become a x-wing, a-wing, y-wing, and b-wing pilot. No joke. There’s over a hundred missions, and at least half of them are going to take a good deal of practice to complete. Wow, that’s done. I’m going to play something less, um, twitchy next…I’m thinking FF4. Yeah. FF4. At any rate, this game has got loads of content, it’s well developed, and you’ll feel like you’re in a tiny little x-wing where literally anything can go wrong and ruin your day. It’s an older game, but you know the loving care that these studios put into these things. The graphics are the 98 version. So, honestly, it looks pretty good. The music is MIDI music. Etc, etc. If you like the old school space shooters, and you haven’t completed this one, you’re in for a treat and a challenge. Man. It’s over. It’s finally over!

STAR WARS - X-Wing Special Edition is the second best classical space flight simulator I’ve ever played, second only to STAR WARS - TIE Fighter Special Edition .

The Steam version of X-Wing includes the Floppy Disk (1993) version (along with the Imperial Pursuit & B-Wing expansions), the Collector’s CD-ROM (1994) version, and the Special Edition (1998) version. As is, the graphics are dated in all three, but it’s still a fun way to experience the 90’s. But for the best experience I would recommend playing the Special Edition version after polishing it up with the 3D and widescreen tweaks according to this guide .

Space Quest™ Collection

Space Quest™ Collection

A Collection of 6 Space Quest titles released from 1986-1995. It’s a great Inventory Adventure series that Sierra On-Line created back when MS-DOS & Windows 3.1/95/98 was still by popular demand.

In Space Quest 1 - The Sarien Encounter:

Roger Wilco is one of the most important men on the starship Arcada: he is the janitor! Just when he was doing what he does best (dozing off in a closet), the shrill sound of an alarm penetrated the air. Arcada is attacked by the evil Sariens! Before Roger realizes what is going on, he discovers that he is the only survivor. The Sariens have killed the entire crew and stolen the valuable Star Generator. Roger’s immediate task is to find a way to leave Arcada, which is about to explode in fifteen minutes. And then he’ll have to show the Sariens why they should never mess with brave intergalactic janitors!

Recommendation:

I heartily enjoyed the Space Quest Collection, but they won’t be everyone’s jam. These games are ‘classics’ in the sense that they’re old, and filled with design decisions that may frustrate the unprepared. If you are looking for sci-fi adventure games to enjoy then I would recommend the Space Quest Collection if:

  • You have the mindset of an archeologist. If you are interested in the history of video games, and want to experience older graphics and gameplay conventions then you’ll find a lot to appreciate.

I played this game when it first came out kids. That’s right. I played on DOS. My CPU was so slow in late game you’d hit ‘next turn’ and go grab lunch and PRAY it was done when you got back. Games took a while.

Back then you kept your games on a shelf, in boxes like freakin' board games. Back then you went to a physical store and walked around trying to decide what to buy because the gaming magazines with reviews lagged behind the release of games so you had to decide what was good by the box art.

Minimal micro-managing. Multiple choices: play one of 10 species; 1-5 opponents; 4 “galaxy” sizes; 4-5 levels of difficulty; up to 15 random events, positive or negative that may or may not occur. There is usually more than 1 choice, often 2-4 of next level of technology to focus research on (computer, construction, force field, planetology, propulsion, weapons) and options via sliding bars to apportion research points among categories; likewise choices @ ea planet to apportion among shipbuilding, missile bases, industry, ecology, tech. You have shipbuilding choice features (size/ propusion/weapons/special features); espionage/sabotage/limited interactive communication choices; ship/fleet combat. Graphics limited (2D). If you want to spend less time learning the game and just playing, this is an easy game to learn and can readily be made more challenging by your selection of species, level of difficulty and size of star domain. If current tech-graphics and very detailed management are more to your liking, you will want a more modern version of MOO or one of the more recently developed similar themed games.

STAR WARS™ Rebellion

STAR WARS™ Rebellion

This is and will remain one of my favourite games of all time, I still play it now and the game time I have logged is a fraction as I’ve only had the it in my steam library for a 3-4mths, I’ve been playing it for years.

It costs less than a pint of beer, infact you could buy a copy for you and a mate for the price of a pint.

Is it for everyone, no.

People who want modern graphics, walk away. (for the old skool SW fans, you’ll see some unique artwork.)

People who want fast paced, walk away.

People who think their Jedi are going to be a super weapon, walk away.

Star Wars: Rebellion is a classic grand strategy game that’s almost as old as I am, and it shows. A word of warning; many of the negative reviews here (rightfully) deal with issues regarding graphics and loading the game, which can be resolved with a bit of tweaking.

I played this game to death as a kid, even though a lot of my success in it was the result of endless hours of trial and error; the learning curve is perhaps the steepest in video game history, there’s no tutorial, and everything that’s thrown at you can be overwhelming even for people who are familiar with grand strategy titles (a PDF scan of the old instruction booklet can be found in the folders, though). Likewise, while the graphics might have been cutting-edge in 1998, they’re… lackluster nowadays.

I didn’t have the PC version of this back in the day, I had the N64 version. When I saw it on Steam, I knew right away that I would be picking it up sooner rather than later. I’m not thrilled with the PS### or XBox controllers, so I bought a USB N64 style controller for this game.

I sold my N64 and most of my games for it earlier this year… I’m now glad to have RS back in my playable library.

The gameplay is solid. Spot on to what I remember loving about this game nearly 20 years ago. While I’m still trying to sort the button configuration(not a Steam flaw… this is user-side)…. playing with the “stock” config is still tons of fun! The graphics are still amazing, considering when it came out. In that, it’s dated well. I’m actually quite glad it hasn’t been “updated” with 1080p graphics and a billion stupid achievements that younger gamer seem to love.

The game is OK!

I finished the game with all gold medals and i am going to resume it:

if you wanna play this game WITHOUT finishing it 100%, it’s one of the best game you will ever play.

if you wanna play this game DOING all the gold medals and shits…. it’s going to be difficult… i mean DIFFICULT…

DIFFICULT

NOT 100%:

Pro:

  • 16 levels of pure “Luke Skywalker help us destroying this big enemy!”

  • the gameplay is different every level, you are going to play different missions and style
