Ephemeral Tale

Ephemeral Tale

Really nice game. Bought it just because of the screenshots showing the different coloured loot but instead I was surprised with good music, good gameplay, and just a really fun game. The biggest surprise was the Dark Souls type leveling and then on top of that there is some Demon’s Souls influence with teleporting to different areas and completing them. Or it felt like that at least. Throw in some Borderlands and you have something cool like this. It’s a short game but you can do more playthroughs after completing the game to look for secrets you might have missed. Give it a try.

Quest for Cathrinite

Quest for Cathrinite

Bland, boring, all levels look the same thanks to same rooms repeated at nauseam.

Somewhere around level 7 the game becomes slog even on normal. Around level 13 the game becomes pretty much unplayable due to amount of enemies with ranged attacks and rooms with respawn.

Developers, stop creating bad parodies of my favourite souls-like genre and start to test your games properly (meaning play your own games from start to end on normal difficulty before asking for our money). Players, stop recommending games without beating them.

P.S: Left some quick tips at the bottom if you’re just looking for some help!

I’ve never written a review on steam but I felt compelled to write one for this game because I saw this game was only reviewed by a first 15 minute youtuber and it deserves some justice.

I want to start out by pointing out that it looks like this game was developed by a single person and so I will take that into account throughout my review.

A “dark souls”-esque game where you are a dwarf venturing deep into a cavern straight out of a fantasy book.

A Journey Through Valhalla

A Journey Through Valhalla

This is a fun game even if you are playing solo. Playing solo is rough because the game was meant for 3 people to co-op. There are some game mechanics I think it needs such as a way to swap out weapons sets during combat and maybe an easier way to loot items. I would also like to see more way to gain experience than just feats. Maybe making skills level as you use them would be a way to go. But, I still enjoyed playing the game, and would recommend it.

I think this game is pretty decent (especially for it being created by 3 people in their spare time) and shows a lot of promise. I’d recommend playing the game with at least one other person as it can be pretty hard solo, but it still provides a pretty enjoyable experience when playing by yourself.

I think this game could benefit from some balancing changes (namely the first boss and the chances of getting better gear, especially for the wizard class) and more content. besides that, this is a pretty cool game.

Pharaonic

Pharaonic

Pros / What’s good?

–————————————–

The Egyptian theme is an eye-pleasing hook, and consistent throughout most of the game. The Serket armor set looks like something from monster hunter and the Ishtar set has this silly blue-pink paint job going on.

Combat is challenging, tactical almost. To Some attacks cannot be blocked, only dodged. Some cannot be dodged, only blocked. These attacks have ‘colored trails’ on them: red is unblockable, blue is undodgeable. Parrying - I found it new that you could parry enemies blocking with their shield in order to get them to drop their guard.

Pharaonic is a game that has drawn many comparisons to the Dark Souls series with its action RPG features and the hacking and slashing. Honestly, I have not played one game of the Dark Souls series. I wanted to give Pharaonic, an indie game, a try because I was captivated by the art direction, the stunning environmental design, and the stunning background design. It is a side scrolling game with a steep learning curve, tough enemies, and a fantastic setting in Ancient Egypt.

The story of Pharaonic is set in Ancient Egypt and you play Dagi, a prisoner who tries to escape from prison to find out what happened to The Red Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt in the year 440. You get to escape with the assistance of a mysterious woman. This is where your journey truly begins, as you are almost fully naked and armed with a basic sword. The plot is not very deep, but the focus of the game is on combat. There are many enemies and the battles are very difficult. I died many times but was rarely frustrated. I quickly realized that getting killed was mainly my fault and it was a matter of understanding my strengths and weaknesses as well as understanding the strengths and weaknesses of my enemies. Your defense, like dodge roll, block, and parry, is just as important as your offense because taking a few too many hits will result in certain death.

Immortal: Unchained

Immortal: Unchained

July 29th update: Chasing the achievements, I finished New Game++ and that was the first time the game was actually fun. When I acquired gear and upgraded my stats to the point that I could deal with the incessant amount of poorly designed enemies the game keeps throwing at you at some reasonable rate. Even then, some places and enemy combinations were really terrible, just further revealing the bad design choices.

Immortal: Chained in Crumminess or as it’s affectionately called “Enter from the Back Simulator, but They’re Kind of Shy” is an overly ambitious undertaking from a small indie studio with a terribly implemented souls formula adding guns into the mix, amazing bugs still present even after 2 years and a DLC, a parody of an AI, poor combat with bad hitboxes, weird and glitchy enemy and character animations, dreadful enemy placements and combinations, general floatiness and slowness of everything and an aggressively hostile attitude towards players, wasting their time and fundamentally and completely missing the point of what makes Dark Souls great.

Welp. I feel I’ve played long enough to give an OK review. It’s thumbs up…

Oh you want more info. Well for starters it’s fun. It’s got a real cool vibe/art style that is similar to something like Chronicles of Riddick (Dark Athena to be specific) which I love although it has a little bit of that why?how?what for? map design that is probably always gonna pop up when designing a world like this. What I mean is everything is odd and alien and that’s cool but even odd alien sentient beings would probably contstruct their buildings with some kind of floorplan for particular reasons. But it’s not any kind of big deal as most every Sci-Fi game does this. Also, even though I’ve seen only a tiny percentage of the weapons and they are cool, no doubt, but they are also weapons from 1970-2000 planet Earth design. One can easily imagine this crazy world was built on top of the ruins of our society far into the future or some such stuff but even then using our old blueprints as a guide…I don’t know it just seems like they coulda went a tad further then giving you a Vector only now it has some glowing futurery bits on it. Still like it though, it’s not a complaint so much as just I wish they did more but that’s being said when I’m just barely out of starter zone.

Legend of Krannia: Cursed Fate

Legend of Krannia: Cursed Fate

Legend of Krannia: Cursed Fate

Legend of Krannia: Cursed Fate is a brand-new indie RPG set in a medieval fantasy past. With a goofy storyline and a fun Hack and Slash, Action RPG style gameplay, Legend of Krannia: Cursed Fate is going to be a fun one.

The game is nowhere near polished or complete, but so far what I have been introduced to is nothing short of impressive, from its quirky dialogue to its point and click hack and slash gameplay.
